CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

The role of pastors’ children in the pastoral ministry is a subject that has garnered increasing attention in recent years. While pastors’ children (PKs) often live under the shadow of their parents’ ministry, their contributions to the church and pastoral work are sometimes overlooked or underappreciated. Several studies indicate that PKs can play an important role in the church’s growth and development, both through their formal and informal contributions to church activities (Fisher, 2017; Moore, 2020). PKs are often involved in ministry work at a young age, taking on responsibilities such as assisting in church programs, leading youth groups, and participating in worship services, thereby directly contributing to the expansion of their father’s pastoral influence. As a result, understanding the nature of this contribution is vital to appreciating the broader impact of pastoral families on church life.

Pastoral families often face unique challenges that distinguish them from other Christian households. Pastors are frequently seen as role models by their congregation, placing immense pressure on their families, including their children. According to Van Driel (2019), the intense public scrutiny placed on pastors can lead to the children feeling isolated or burdened by expectations that they follow in their parents’ footsteps. This dynamic can create a sense of dual responsibility for PKs: one to their own personal development and another to the fulfillment of their father’s pastoral duties. In this context, their contributions to ministry are often framed by these complex emotional and relational dynamics, which can affect both the quality and sustainability of their involvement in church activities.

In Cameroon, where the study is situated, pastors’ children in the church context face a unique set of challenges. The African church, particularly in Pentecostal and Charismatic settings, often emphasizes familial involvement in ministry as a vital element for church growth. The church setting in the Town Assemblies of God (TAC), Field 1 in Cameroon, offers a distinct perspective on PKs’ involvement. In this region, PKs are commonly seen as extensions of their father’s ministry, expected to assist not only with spiritual matters but also in the logistical and organizational functions that support church activities. They play a critical role in pastoral training, evangelism, and leadership development. However, it is important to note that the culture of respect for the pastoral office in Cameroon may place undue pressure on these children, which could impact their contributions in both positive and negative ways (Teguia, 2018).

There is a significant body of research exploring the pressures faced by PKs in Africa, with a particular emphasis on their spiritual and emotional development. A study by Ngoh (2020) revealed that the involvement of PKs in church activities could either serve as a source of empowerment or become a source of stress, depending on how they are socialized within their families. For some, involvement in ministry is seen as an opportunity to grow in faith and serve God, while for others, it becomes a burden due to the expectations placed upon them. These dynamics are further compounded in the African context by the traditional roles ascribed to children in African households, where there is often an implicit expectation of obedience and submission to parental authority. This dual expectation – to serve in the ministry and to honor family traditions – creates an intricate balancing act for PKs in the TAC churches of Cameroon.

Despite the challenges, research suggests that PKs also experience profound opportunities for personal and spiritual growth within the context of their contributions to pastoral ministry. The work of Clark (2016) highlights that PKs often gain unique insights into leadership, community engagement, and the complexities of church administration. These experiences may provide PKs with skills that extend beyond the church, such as public speaking, organizational management, and interpersonal communication. In Cameroon’s TAC Field 1, many pastors’ children reportedly view their involvement in ministry as an opportunity to deepen their relationship with God and cultivate a sense of purpose in their lives (Teguia, 2018). In some instances, the opportunities for leadership and mentorship they receive through church-related tasks can shape their career paths and contribute to their personal growth as leaders in the broader community.

The contributions of pastors’ children to their fathers’ pastoral ministry in Cameroon, specifically within the context of TAC Field 1, are multifaceted and shaped by both individual and cultural factors. While the demands placed on PKs can create tension and emotional strain, there are also significant benefits to their involvement in ministry. They gain invaluable skills, foster strong spiritual foundations, and contribute to the development of their local churches. However, further research is needed to explore the specific dynamics of PKs’ contributions within the unique cultural and socio-economic context of Cameroon. More in-depth studies focusing on the intersection of family dynamics, church culture, and the lived experiences of PKs in Africa will provide deeper insights into how their contributions can be better recognized and supported.

  • Statement of the Problem

..

The contribution of pastors’ children (PKs) to their fathers’ pastoral ministry remains an underexplored area in Christian ministry research, especially in African contexts. In many Pentecostal and Charismatic churches in Africa, such as the Town Assemblies of God (TAC) in Cameroon, PKs are often expected to be actively involved in church activities, assisting their fathers in various ministerial tasks. While there is some understanding of the pressures and expectations placed on these children, there is limited empirical research investigating the nature and extent of their contributions to their fathers’ pastoral work. This gap in the literature presents a significant challenge, as it hinders a deeper understanding of the role PKs play in the broader scope of church life, particularly in the Cameroonian context.

In TAC Field 1, as in many other African church settings, pastors’ children are often considered an extension of the pastoral office, with an implicit expectation that they will contribute to church activities from a young age. This expectation is rooted in both cultural and religious traditions, where the success of a pastor is frequently linked to the involvement of their family, particularly their children. However, while PKs may engage in a variety of tasks such as teaching Sunday school, leading youth groups, organizing church events, and supporting pastoral care, the emotional and psychological toll these responsibilities take on them is largely unexplored. Moreover, the influence of these contributions on the overall effectiveness of the ministry, and on the personal development of the PKs, remains unclear.

Pastors’ children in Cameroon, especially in the Pentecostal context, are also subject to unique social and cultural pressures. In Cameroon, the cultural framework often places a strong emphasis on respect for authority, particularly within the family and the church. PKs may feel torn between fulfilling their expected roles within the church and pursuing their own personal aspirations. Additionally, they are frequently exposed to the public and private challenges their fathers face in ministry, such as criticism, financial strain, and emotional burdens. This exposure can result in complex emotional dynamics, where the line between personal identity and ministerial identity becomes blurred. The existing literature does not adequately address how these pressures affect the PKs’ willingness and ability to contribute to the ministry in a sustainable way, nor how they perceive their role in their father’s pastoral work.

Moreover, while PKs in TAC Field 1 are often seen as pivotal players in the church’s mission and growth, there is insufficient understanding of the specific ways in which their contributions impact the pastoral ministry. Are their contributions perceived as voluntary acts of service, or are they seen as obligatory duties that stem from the familial expectations placed on them? This question is critical in determining whether PKs’ involvement in ministry is an empowering experience or whether it serves as a source of emotional strain. Understanding the nature of these contributions can provide insight into the broader dynamics of church growth, leadership succession, and the long-term sustainability of pastoral ministries in the African context.

Furthermore, there is a lack of research on the personal development of PKs within the context of their involvement in pastoral ministry. While some studies have explored the spiritual formation of PKs, fewer have examined how their involvement in their father’s ministry shapes their broader life trajectories, including their career choices, leadership development, and relationships with the church community. It is essential to investigate whether their experiences in ministry contribute to positive life skills, such as leadership, communication, and community building, or whether they experience challenges that hinder their personal and professional growth. This research gap undermines a comprehensive understanding of the ways in which pastoral ministry, as a family-centered vocation, can impact both the pastor and the PK in the long run.

In light of these issues, the proposed investigation seeks to address the gap in the literature by exploring the contributions of pastors’ children to their fathers’ pastoral ministry in TAC Field 1, Cameroon. The study will seek to answer several key questions: What are the specific contributions of PKs in the church setting? How do PKs perceive their roles in their father’s ministry? What impact do their contributions have on their personal development and spiritual growth? And, finally, what are the challenges and rewards associated with these contributions from the perspective of both the PKs and their fathers? Addressing these questions will not only contribute to the academic discourse on pastoral ministry but also provide practical insights for supporting pastors’ families in their ministerial roles.

The need for this study arises from a combination of the growing importance of PKs in the African church, the lack of research on their contributions, and the potential implications of their involvement for both the individual and the church. By investigating the contributions of pastors’ children to their fathers’ pastoral ministry in TAC Field 1, Cameroon, this research aims to fill a significant gap in the literature, offering a nuanced understanding of how PKs engage with the demands of ministry. Ultimately, the findings of this study could inform pastoral training, church policies, and family dynamics within the context of Cameroon and similar African settings, leading to more supportive and effective structures for both pastors and their children.

The primary data collection methods will include survey collected from respondents. The study employed the descriptive survey design. For the purpose of this study, the target population consists of ministers’ children from TAC Filed 1, Cameroon. To select the needed samples for this study, the researcher used a total number of one hundred (100) ministers’ children from TAC Filed 1, Cameroon. The response to the questionnaire items was analyzed using frequency tables and simple percentage method. The research hypotheses stated earlier was tested using Chi-Square Statistics.

1.6. Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Investigation: In the context of this study, an investigation refers to a systematic inquiry or examination aimed at gathering information, exploring, and understanding a specific phenomenon. The purpose is to gather empirical data through qualitative methods (such as interviews and discussions) to assess the contributions of pastors’ children to their fathers’ pastoral ministry and the impact of these contributions on both the children and the ministry itself.
  2. Contribution: Contribution, in this context, refers to the active involvement and support provided by pastors’ children (PKs) in their fathers’ pastoral work. This includes both formal and informal roles such as assisting in church activities (e.g., leading youth groups, teaching Sunday school), offering emotional and logistical support to their fathers, and playing a role in the church’s growth and mission. Contributions may be seen in the context of both tangible (e.g., organizational help) and intangible (e.g., spiritual or emotional support) inputs to the ministry.
  3. Pastors’ Children: Pastors’ children (PKs) are the offspring of individuals who serve as pastors or leaders within Christian congregations. These children grow up in a unique environment where the religious and pastoral duties of their parents often intertwine with their personal lives. In the context of this study, PKs are expected to participate in church activities and contribute to the pastoral ministry of their fathers, sometimes under both voluntary and cultural expectations.
  4. Father: In this study, the term “father” refers specifically to the male head of a family who is also a pastor within the church. This father figure holds both spiritual and familial leadership roles, guiding not only his household but also his congregation. The father’s pastoral responsibilities significantly influence the dynamics of the family, especially regarding the involvement of his children in the ministry.
  5. Pastoral Ministry: Pastoral ministry refers to the work, duties, and responsibilities that a pastor undertakes in leading and serving a Christian congregation. This includes preaching, teaching, counseling, leading worship services, administering sacraments, offering spiritual guidance, and overseeing various church activities. In this study, the focus is on how pastors’ children assist or contribute to their fathers’ pastoral duties, which often involve both spiritual leadership and practical church management.
  6. Case Study: TAC Field 1: A case study is a research method that involves an in-depth examination of a specific instance or context. “TAC Field 1” refers to a specific geographic and organizational area within the Town Assemblies of God (TAC) denomination in Cameroon. TAC Field 1 serves as the focal point for this study, providing a contextual framework for understanding the contributions of pastors’ children to the pastoral ministry within this specific church setting. The case study approach will allow for a detailed exploration of the unique social, cultural, and religious factors that shape the experiences of PKs in this area.
