INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Environmental sanitation is a fundamental component of public health that focuses on maintaining hygienic conditions through proper waste disposal, clean water supply, safe sewage management, and general cleanliness of the environment. It plays a critical role in preventing the spread of communicable diseases and promoting overall community health. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes environmental sanitation as a key determinant of health, emphasizing that unsafe sanitation contributes significantly to the global burden of disease, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (WHO, 2021).
Globally, poor environmental sanitation is associated with the transmission of diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, diarrhoea, hepatitis A, and other waterborne and vector-borne diseases. According to WHO and UNICEF reports, billions of people still lack access to safely managed sanitation services, leading to preventable morbidity and mortality, especially among children under five years of age. Inadequate sanitation also contributes to environmental pollution, antimicrobial resistance, and reduced quality of life.
In many developing countries, environmental sanitation practices are often constrained by rapid urbanization, population growth, inadequate infrastructure, and weak enforcement of environmental health regulations. These challenges make it difficult to maintain clean surroundings, especially in densely populated urban areas. As a result, health facilities are often confronted with the dual burden of treating sanitation-related diseases while also managing poor environmental conditions within their catchment communities.
In Nigeria, environmental sanitation remains a major public health concern. Despite the existence of policies and programs aimed at improving sanitation, including monthly environmental sanitation exercises in some states, implementation and compliance remain inconsistent. Poor waste disposal practices, blocked drainage systems, open defecation, and inadequate sewage management continue to contribute to disease outbreaks in many communities.
Within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, environmental sanitation conditions vary across different districts. Urban centres experience challenges such as overcrowding, poor waste management systems, and inadequate drainage infrastructure, all of which increase the risk of disease transmission. One of such areas is Wuse Local Government Area, a densely populated commercial and residential district within Abuja.
Health centres in Wuse LGA are expected to play a dual role in providing healthcare services and promoting environmental health education within the community. These facilities are also directly affected by the environmental conditions of their surroundings, as poor sanitation can contribute to increased patient load due to preventable diseases.
However, despite ongoing environmental health interventions, cases of sanitation-related diseases continue to be reported in health centres within Wuse LGA. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of environmental sanitation practices and their impact on disease prevention. Understanding the relationship between sanitation practices and disease occurrence is therefore essential for improving public health outcomes and strengthening environmental health systems.
This study, therefore, seeks to analyze environmental sanitation practices and their impact on disease prevention in health centres in Wuse Local Government Area, Abuja (FCT).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Environmental sanitation is widely recognized as a key strategy for preventing communicable diseases and promoting public health. However, despite its importance, poor sanitation practices remain prevalent in many urban areas of Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory.
In Wuse Local Government Area, environmental sanitation challenges such as improper waste disposal, clogged drainage systems, inadequate toilet facilities, and poor hygiene practices continue to pose significant public health risks. These conditions contribute to the spread of diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, diarrhoea, and other infections that are commonly reported in health centres within the area.
Health centres in Wuse LGA are often burdened with cases of preventable diseases that are directly linked to poor environmental sanitation. This situation not only increases the workload on healthcare facilities but also places a strain on limited health resources. It further indicates a gap between environmental health policies and actual community practices.
Although government agencies and environmental health officers conduct periodic sanitation campaigns and enforcement activities, the persistence of sanitation-related diseases suggests that these efforts may not be fully effective. There is also limited empirical evidence on how environmental sanitation practices at the community level directly influence disease patterns in health centres within Wuse LGA.
Furthermore, factors such as lack of public awareness, inadequate enforcement of sanitation laws, poor infrastructure, and behavioural attitudes may be contributing to ineffective sanitation practices. However, the extent to which these factors influence disease prevention in the study area has not been adequately investigated.
It is against this backdrop that this study analyzes environmental sanitation practices and their impact on disease prevention in health centres in Wuse Local Government Area, Abuja (FCT).
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to analyze environmental sanitation practices and their impact on disease prevention in health centres in Wuse LGA, Abuja (FCT).
Specifically, the study aims to:
- Examine the environmental sanitation practices in communities within Wuse LGA.
- Identify common sanitation-related diseases reported in health centres in the area.
- Assess the relationship between sanitation practices and disease occurrence.
- Determine the challenges affecting effective environmental sanitation in Wuse LGA.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it will provide empirical evidence on the relationship between environmental sanitation and disease prevention in Wuse LGA. The findings will assist policymakers and environmental health authorities in designing effective sanitation policies and interventions. It will also help health workers understand the link between environmental conditions and disease patterns, thereby improving preventive healthcare strategies. Additionally, the study will contribute to academic literature on environmental health and disease prevention in urban Nigerian settings.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to environmental sanitation practices and disease prevention in health centres within Wuse Local Government Area. It focuses on sanitation practices such as waste disposal, drainage management, water supply, and hygiene behaviour, as well as diseases associated with poor environmental sanitation.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Environmental Sanitation: Practices aimed at maintaining clean and healthy environmental conditions through proper waste management, hygiene, and pollution control.
Disease Prevention: Measures and actions taken to prevent the occurrence and spread of diseases.
Health Centre: A primary healthcare facility that provides basic medical services to the community.
