INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Health education is an essential component of public health that seeks to empower individuals and communities with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to make informed decisions about their health and well-being (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). It focuses not only on imparting factual information about health and diseases but also on shaping behaviors that contribute to disease prevention and the promotion of healthy living. Among school-aged children, health education serves as a preventive strategy that fosters awareness and responsible behavior toward maintaining personal and environmental hygiene. Since children spend a significant portion of their formative years in school, this institution provides a unique platform for instilling lifelong healthy habits and values that can positively influence both individual and community health outcomes (Adebayo & Olatunji, 2020).
Communicable diseases—those caused by pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites—remain among the leading causes of illness and death in many developing nations, including Nigeria (WHO, 2019). These diseases are easily transmitted from one person to another through various means such as direct contact, contaminated food and water, and vectors like mosquitoes. The World Health Organization (2021) has consistently emphasized the need for preventive measures through health education, sanitation improvement, and immunization as key strategies to reduce the spread of communicable diseases. Despite these efforts, low-income regions continue to face persistent outbreaks of preventable diseases due to poor awareness, inadequate health education, and weak public health infrastructure (NPHCDA, 2022).
In Nigeria, communicable diseases such as malaria, typhoid fever, cholera, dysentery, measles, and respiratory infections continue to constitute major public health burdens (National Primary Health Care Development Agency [NPHCDA], 2022). School-aged children are particularly vulnerable due to their developing immune systems and exposure to unhygienic school environments. Factors such as overcrowded classrooms, lack of clean water, poor waste management systems, and insufficient toilet facilities create favorable conditions for the spread of infections (Eke & Nwachukwu, 2019). Additionally, poor personal hygiene practices—such as not washing hands after using the toilet or before eating—contribute significantly to disease transmission among pupils.
Health education plays a critical role in addressing these challenges by equipping pupils with the knowledge and skills necessary for disease prevention. Through structured health education lessons, children can learn about personal hygiene, safe food handling, environmental sanitation, and the importance of immunization and early treatment of infections (Okafor & Ibrahim, 2021). School-based health education programs also help pupils recognize the symptoms of common diseases and understand the importance of seeking prompt medical attention. The World Health Organization (2019) identifies such initiatives as vital for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
The inclusion of health education in the primary school curriculum in Nigeria demonstrates recognition of its importance in shaping healthy future citizens. However, the implementation of such programs has often been hampered by various factors, including inadequate teacher training, poor curriculum delivery, and a lack of instructional materials (Ogunleye, 2022). Many teachers responsible for delivering health education lessons lack specialized knowledge in the field, leading to a superficial approach that fails to engage pupils effectively. Moreover, overcrowded classrooms and competing academic priorities often result in health education being given less attention compared to core subjects like mathematics and English.
Jenkwe Development Area in Nasarawa State, like many other rural and semi-urban communities in Nigeria, faces considerable public health challenges related to sanitation and hygiene. Limited access to potable water, poor waste disposal systems, and insufficient health facilities increase the vulnerability of residents—especially children—to communicable diseases. In such environments, the role of schools as centers for health promotion becomes even more crucial. When pupils are adequately taught about personal and community hygiene, they can influence their peers and families to adopt safer health practices, thereby extending the benefits of health education beyond the school environment (Nwosu, 2020).
Despite the integration of health education into the basic education curriculum, there is evidence that the desired outcomes have not been fully realized in many Nigerian schools (Adebayo & Olatunji, 2020). The problem is further compounded by socioeconomic factors such as poverty, parental illiteracy, and inadequate government support for school health programs. These factors limit pupils’ ability to translate health education knowledge into practical action. Consequently, outbreaks of preventable diseases continue to occur, suggesting a gap between policy intentions and actual practice in the school health education system.
Therefore, this study seeks to assess the extent to which health education contributes to the control of communicable diseases among public primary school pupils in Jenkwe Development Area, Nasarawa State. The study aims to examine pupils’ awareness, attitudes, and practices regarding communicable disease prevention, evaluate the effectiveness of existing health education programs, and identify barriers that hinder their successful implementation. The findings will provide useful insights for policymakers, educators, and health practitioners on how to strengthen school-based health education as a sustainable strategy for disease control and health promotion in primary schools across Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Communicable diseases remain one of the leading causes of illness and death among children in Nigeria, particularly in rural and peri-urban communities where access to quality healthcare and sanitation is limited (Okechukwu & Hassan, 2018). These diseases, which include malaria, cholera, typhoid fever, diarrhea, and respiratory infections, continue to threaten children’s health and hinder their educational development. School-aged children are especially vulnerable because they are often in close contact with peers in overcrowded classrooms, which increases the risk of disease transmission. Poor hygiene practices such as failure to wash hands, inadequate waste disposal, and consumption of unsafe water further heighten this vulnerability.
In many Nigerian public primary schools, learning environments are characterized by poor sanitation facilities, limited access to clean water, and inadequate waste management systems. These conditions create a fertile ground for the spread of communicable diseases among pupils. For instance, poorly maintained toilets and stagnant water around school compounds serve as breeding sites for disease-causing organisms and vectors such as mosquitoes. Despite the inclusion of health education in the Universal Basic Education (UBE) curriculum, pupils’ health practices often remain substandard due to inadequate health instruction and poor implementation of school health programs (Adebayo & Olatunji, 2020).
Although the Nigerian government has developed several policies and initiatives to promote school health education—such as the National School Health Policy—implementation at the grassroots level remains weak (Ogunleye, 2022). Many teachers responsible for delivering health education lack the necessary training and resources to teach health concepts effectively. Furthermore, the absence of adequate teaching materials and the low prioritization of health-related subjects often result in poor knowledge retention and limited behavioral change among pupils. As a result, children continue to engage in risky practices that expose them to infections, thereby undermining the purpose of health education in schools.
In Jenkwe Development Area of Nasarawa State, these challenges appear to be particularly pronounced. The area, like many rural communities, struggles with inadequate infrastructure, poor environmental sanitation, and limited access to health facilities. Observations indicate that outbreaks of communicable diseases such as malaria, cholera, and respiratory infections are frequent, especially during the rainy season when waterborne and vector-borne diseases are most prevalent. These recurring disease outbreaks raise serious concerns about the effectiveness of existing school-based health education programs in mitigating disease transmission among primary school pupils.
Furthermore, there is limited empirical data on how health education programs are being implemented in primary schools within Jenkwe Development Area. Most available studies on health education and disease prevention in Nigeria have focused on urban centers, leaving rural and semi-urban areas underrepresented in scholarly research (Eke & Nwachukwu, 2019). This lack of context-specific evidence makes it difficult for policymakers and educators to design effective interventions tailored to the unique needs of local schools. Without reliable data, it becomes challenging to evaluate the extent to which health education is influencing pupils’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to communicable disease control in the study area.
Therefore, this study seeks to fill this gap by assessing the impact of health education on the control of communicable diseases among public primary school pupils in Jenkwe Development Area, Nasarawa State. It aims to determine whether pupils possess adequate knowledge of disease prevention, whether they practice healthy habits learned in school, and what challenges hinder the effective delivery of health education. The findings of this research will provide valuable insights for improving school health programs and contribute to the broader goal of reducing the burden of communicable diseases among Nigerian children.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to assess the role of health education in the control of communicable diseases among public primary school pupils in Jenkwe Development Area, Nasarawa State.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- Examine the level of awareness of communicable diseases among public primary school pupils in Jenkwe Development Area.
- Assess pupils’ knowledge and practices of health education related to disease prevention and control.
- Identify the challenges facing effective implementation of health education programs in public primary schools.
- Determine the relationship between health education and the incidence of communicable diseases among pupils.
1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Research Hypothesis

1.6 Significance of the Study
The significance of this study lies in its potential to contribute to improved health outcomes among school-aged children through the enhancement of school health education programs. Health education is widely recognized as an effective tool for promoting disease prevention and healthy living among children (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). By examining how health education influences the control of communicable diseases among public primary school pupils in Jenkwe Development Area, this study will generate empirical evidence that can guide schools and health authorities in developing more effective and sustainable health promotion strategies. The findings will thus provide a foundation for improving pupils’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding hygiene and communicable disease prevention.
For school administrators and teachers, the study will be particularly valuable in evaluating the effectiveness of existing health education programs within primary schools. It will highlight strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in program delivery, including areas where instructional methods, teacher training, and health-related activities can be improved. Teachers, as the primary agents of curriculum implementation, will benefit from insights into how to better integrate practical health education into daily classroom activities. Furthermore, school administrators will be equipped with evidence-based recommendations for ensuring that health education is prioritized and effectively monitored as part of the overall school development plan (Ogunleye, 2022).

Many health habits are learned and reinforced at home; therefore, when parents are informed about the importance of hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention, they are more likely to reinforce these practices among their children. The findings will encourage parents to collaborate with schools in maintaining clean surroundings, ensuring proper waste disposal, and supporting immunization and medical care for their children (Eke & Nwachukwu, 2019). By fostering such partnerships, the study will promote a more holistic approach to health education that bridges the gap between school and home.
Additionally, government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in child health and education will benefit from the outcomes of this research. The study’s findings can guide the design of community-based health initiatives, improve teacher capacity-building programs, and encourage resource allocation toward school health infrastructure—such as clean water, toilets, and waste management systems. For NGOs engaged in child welfare and disease prevention, the results will provide a factual basis for implementing advocacy campaigns and health education workshops aimed at improving the health literacy of both pupils and educators.
Finally, the study will be valuable to future researchers and scholars as a source of reference for further investigation into health education and communicable disease control in Nigeria and similar developing contexts. It will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing localized data from Jenkwe Development Area, which is often underrepresented in academic literature. By identifying the successes and challenges of health education in controlling communicable diseases among pupils, this research will open avenues for comparative studies, policy evaluations, and longitudinal research on school health programs. Ultimately, the study’s findings will serve as a foundation for advancing public health education and promoting a healthier, more informed generation of Nigerian children.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the assessment of health education and its role in the control and prevention of communicable diseases among public primary school pupils within the Jenkwe Development Area of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The research is specifically delimited to examining how health education influences pupils’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding communicable diseases such as malaria, typhoid fever, cholera, and respiratory infections. These diseases were selected because they are among the most common causes of illness and absenteeism among primary school children in the area, often arising from poor hygiene, inadequate sanitation, and limited awareness of preventive measures.
The geographical scope of the study is confined to Jenkwe Development Area, a region located within Nasarawa State that includes both rural and semi-urban communities. The area is characterized by varying levels of access to healthcare, sanitation facilities, and educational resources, making it a relevant setting for studying the effectiveness of school-based health education programs. The findings of this study are expected to reflect the general situation of public primary schools in similar socio-economic and environmental conditions across the state and possibly other parts of Nigeria.
In terms of educational scope, the study targets pupils enrolled in public primary schools under the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) in Jenkwe. The focus is on assessing the extent of pupils’ awareness of communicable diseases, their level of health-related knowledge, and their hygiene practices. In addition, the study investigates the challenges teachers and school administrators face in implementing effective health education programs, such as inadequate instructional materials, limited teacher training, and poor supervision by educational authorities.
The specific schools selected for the study include: LGEA Primary School Dazhogwa, LGEA Primary School Gidan-Ausa, LGEA Primary School Ishugu, LGEA Primary School Gidinye, LGEA Primary School Kpangwa, LGEA Primary School Dazhila, LGEA Primary School Duglu, LGEA Primary School Akeleku, LGEA Primary School Adevi, LGEA Primary School Akanga, LGEA Primary School Akabba, LGEA Primary School Zherugba, LGEA Primary School Ome, LGEA Primary School Atabala, LGEA Primary School Shupe, LGEA Primary School Gude, LGEA Primary School Ninini, LGEA Primary School Abioga, KLGEA Primary School Kyakale, LGEA Primary School Ichechene, LGEA Primary School Bubba, LGEA Primary School Agyaragu Tasha, and LGEA Primary School Kunza.
