INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is widely recognized as a critical driver of national development, and effective teaching is central to students’ academic success. In recent years, the integration of mobile learning applications (m-learning apps) into classroom instruction has transformed teaching and learning processes worldwide (Traxler, 2010). Mobile learning applications, which include platforms such as Google Classroom, Kahoot, Quizlet, and Edmodo, allow students to access educational content anytime and anywhere using mobile devices like smartphones and tablets (Al-Emran, Mezhuyev, & Kamaludin, 2018). This flexibility enables interactive, personalized, and self-paced learning experiences, particularly in subjects that are often perceived as challenging, such as science.
In Nigeria, the adoption of mobile learning is gaining traction due to the increasing penetration of mobile technology and internet access among students and teachers (Obi, 2020). Senior secondary school students, who are preparing for national examinations such as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), stand to benefit from mobile learning applications that can supplement traditional classroom instruction (Eze, 2016). In Yaba, Lagos, a hub of education and technology with a high concentration of secondary schools and technical institutions, the potential of mobile learning to enhance science achievement has not been fully explored. While some teachers have incorporated digital resources into their teaching, many still rely heavily on traditional lecture-based methods, limiting students’ engagement and understanding of complex scientific concepts (Afolabi & Adeoye, 2019).
Studies have shown that mobile learning can improve students’ motivation, participation, and academic performance when effectively integrated into instruction (Park, 2011; Kukulska-Hulme, 2012). However, challenges such as limited internet access, lack of teacher training, and inadequate technical support may hinder its effectiveness. Understanding the role of mobile learning applications in enhancing science achievement among senior secondary school students in Yaba is therefore essential to inform teaching practices, curriculum planning, and policy formulation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Science education is often considered one of the most difficult subjects for students at the senior secondary school level in Nigeria. Many students struggle with abstract concepts, low engagement, and poor performance in national examinations (Afolabi & Adeoye, 2019). Although mobile learning applications have the potential to improve comprehension, motivation, and retention of scientific knowledge, many schools in Yaba have not fully integrated these technologies into classroom instruction.
The problem is further compounded by factors such as insufficient teacher training on mobile learning tools, limited access to mobile devices, unstable internet connectivity, and the reliance on traditional lecture-based teaching methods (Obi, 2020). Consequently, it remains unclear whether the use of mobile learning applications significantly enhances students’ science achievement in senior secondary schools in Yaba, Lagos. Addressing this problem is crucial for educators, policymakers, and curriculum planners seeking to improve science education outcomes using technology-based interventions.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the role of mobile learning applications in enhancing science achievement among senior secondary school students in Yaba, Lagos. The specific objectives are:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following null hypothesis at a 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: Mobile learning applications have no significant impact on students’ science achievement in senior secondary schools in Yaba, Lagos.
H₁: Mobile learning applications have a significant impact on students’ science achievement in senior secondary schools in Yaba, Lagos.
