INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Air quality is a critical determinant of public health, environmental sustainability, and economic productivity. Globally, air pollution is recognized as one of the leading causes of morbidity and premature death, contributing to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and other health complications (WHO, 2021). Urban centers, in particular, experience elevated levels of air pollution due to rapid industrialization, increasing vehicular emissions, construction activities, and energy generation from fossil fuels.
Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital and largest city, is a prime example of an urban area grappling with air quality challenges. The city’s high population density, combined with uncontrolled industrial emissions, frequent traffic congestion, and widespread use of diesel generators, has significantly deteriorated ambient air quality (Olujimi & Adeyemi, 2019). Studies indicate that pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are prevalent in Lagos, often exceeding World Health Organization (WHO) safe limits (Adeniran et al., 2020).
Poor air quality is closely linked to adverse health outcomes. Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter and gaseous pollutants has been associated with increased incidences of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and even adverse pregnancy outcomes (Eze et al., 2019). Children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable. Despite various regulatory frameworks, including the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) guidelines and Lagos State environmental policies, enforcement is inconsistent, and public awareness of air pollution risks remains limited (Adewumi & Oladipo, 2018).
Given the growing urban population and industrial activities, assessing air quality and understanding its health implications in Lagos is imperative. This study aims to evaluate current air quality levels, identify primary sources of pollutants, and investigate their potential impact on the health of Lagos residents.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Lagos faces significant air pollution challenges due to its rapid urbanization, high vehicular density, industrialization, and use of fossil fuel-powered generators. Many areas in the city report levels of particulate matter and gaseous pollutants exceeding recommended safety thresholds (Adeniran et al., 2020). Residents frequently suffer from respiratory issues, including asthma, bronchitis, and other chronic illnesses, which are exacerbated by poor air quality. Vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly, are at higher risk of health complications (Eze et al., 2019).
Despite regulatory measures and periodic environmental assessments, enforcement of air quality standards remains weak. Furthermore, there is limited empirical data linking specific pollutant levels to health outcomes in different parts of Lagos. Consequently, public health interventions are often reactive rather than preventive, and there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of how urban air quality impacts residents’ health. This study seeks to fill this knowledge gap by providing an empirical assessment of air quality and its health implications in Lagos.
1.3 Research Objectives
The main objective of this study is to assess air quality and its health implications in Lagos urban centers. The specific objectives are:

To measure levels of key air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NOx, SO₂, CO, and VOCs) in selected areas of Lagos.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₁: Air pollution has a significant impact on the health of residents in Lagos urban centers.

Health implications will be assessed based on the prevalence of respiratory, cardiovascular, and other pollution-related health conditions among residents. The study covers selected high-traffic and industrial areas of Lagos over a one-year period to capture seasonal variations in air quality.
