Project – Assessment of Digital Library Services and Students’ Academic Performance in Tertiary Institutions in Kaduna State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
The advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) has transformed virtually every sector of human society, including education and library services. Libraries, which were traditionally known for storing printed books and materials, have evolved into digital information centers where users can access electronic resources through computers and internet facilities. Digital library services have become an essential component of modern educational institutions because they provide students and researchers with quick, convenient, and unlimited access to information resources.
Digital library services refer to electronic library operations and services that enable users to access information resources in digital formats through internet-connected systems and other technological platforms. These services include online databases, e-books, e-journals, institutional repositories, electronic catalogues, internet services, digital archives, virtual reference services, and online learning resources. The emergence of digital libraries has significantly changed the way students search for information, conduct research, and complete academic activities.
In tertiary institutions, digital library services play a vital role in supporting teaching, learning, and research. Students rely on digital libraries to access current academic materials, complete assignments, prepare for examinations, and conduct research projects. Unlike traditional libraries, digital libraries provide twenty-four-hour access to information resources regardless of location. According to Aina (2014), digital library services have improved information accessibility and enhanced academic productivity among students in higher institutions.
The importance of digital library services has increased rapidly because of globalization and technological advancement. Modern education requires students to possess digital literacy skills and the ability to access online information resources efficiently. Universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education now integrate digital library services into their academic systems to improve the quality of education and research output. Digital libraries provide access to millions of scholarly materials that may not be available in printed form within physical libraries.
In Nigeria, the adoption of digital library services has grown gradually over the years, particularly in tertiary institutions. Several institutions have introduced electronic libraries equipped with computers, internet connectivity, online databases, and digital repositories. Government agencies, educational organizations, and international bodies have also supported the development of digital library infrastructure in Nigerian institutions. Despite these efforts, many institutions still face challenges in providing effective digital library services.
In Kaduna State, tertiary institutions have increasingly recognized the importance of digital library services in improving students’ academic performance. Institutions such as universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education have established digital libraries to facilitate access to educational materials and online information resources. Students in these institutions use digital library services for assignments, projects, examinations, and research activities.
Academic performance refers to the level of achievement attained by students in their educational activities. It is commonly measured through examination results, assignments, projects, continuous assessments, and overall academic achievement. Effective use of digital library services can positively influence students’ academic performance by providing access to quality learning materials and current research information.
Digital library services promote independent learning, critical thinking, and research skills among students. Through digital libraries, students can access scholarly journals, academic databases, electronic textbooks, and online tutorials that contribute to knowledge acquisition and intellectual development. According to Omekwu (2016), students who effectively utilize digital library services tend to perform better academically because they have access to diverse and updated information resources.
Furthermore, digital libraries reduce the limitations associated with traditional libraries such as inadequate seating spaces, limited copies of books, and restricted opening hours. Students can access digital resources remotely through mobile devices, laptops, and computers connected to the internet. This flexibility encourages continuous learning and academic engagement beyond the physical classroom environment.
The COVID-19 pandemic further emphasized the importance of digital library services in educational institutions worldwide. During the pandemic, many tertiary institutions depended heavily on online learning platforms and digital library resources to continue academic activities. Students who had access to digital libraries were able to continue learning despite restrictions on physical movement and classroom activities.
Despite the numerous benefits of digital library services, several challenges affect their effectiveness in tertiary institutions in Kaduna State. Some institutions experience poor internet connectivity, inadequate ICT infrastructure, unstable electricity supply, shortage of computers, and insufficient digital resources. In addition, some students lack adequate digital literacy skills needed for effective utilization of digital library services.
The issue of inadequate funding also affects the development and maintenance of digital libraries in many institutions. Some tertiary institutions are unable to subscribe to relevant academic databases or update their digital resources regularly because of financial constraints. Consequently, students may experience limited access to current information resources required for academic excellence.
Another concern is the low level of awareness and utilization of digital library services among students. Some students still depend mainly on printed materials and may not fully understand how to access or utilize electronic resources effectively. This affects the extent to which digital library services contribute to academic performance.
The quality of digital library services provided by tertiary institutions can significantly influence students’ academic success. Institutions with functional digital libraries, adequate internet facilities, and trained library personnel are more likely to support effective teaching and learning. Therefore, there is a growing need to assess the availability, accessibility, utilization, and effectiveness of digital library services in tertiary institutions in Kaduna State.
This study therefore seeks to assess digital library services and students’ academic performance in tertiary institutions in Kaduna State. The study aims to examine the extent to which digital library services influence academic achievement, identify challenges affecting digital library utilization, and provide recommendations for improving digital library services in tertiary institutions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The development of digital library services has become a major priority in tertiary institutions because of the increasing demand for electronic information resources and technological advancement in education. Digital libraries are expected to provide students with quick access to academic materials, improve research activities, and enhance academic performance. However, despite the establishment of digital library services in many tertiary institutions in Kaduna State, students’ academic performance in some institutions remains unsatisfactory.
One of the major problems facing tertiary institutions is inadequate digital library infrastructure. Many institutions lack sufficient computers, internet facilities, electronic databases, and modern digital equipment necessary for effective library operations. In some institutions, available digital library facilities are either outdated or insufficient to meet the growing population of students. This situation limits students’ access to electronic information resources and affects effective learning.
Poor internet connectivity is another serious problem affecting digital library services in tertiary institutions. Students often experience slow internet speed, unstable networks, and frequent service interruptions while accessing digital resources. These challenges discourage effective utilization of digital libraries and reduce students’ ability to access current academic materials required for learning and research.
Inadequate electricity supply also affects the operation of digital libraries in many institutions. Since digital library services depend largely on electricity and internet facilities, unstable power supply disrupts access to electronic resources and limits the effectiveness of digital learning activities.
Another problem is the low level of digital literacy among some students. Many students lack adequate skills required for searching online databases, accessing electronic journals, and utilizing digital library platforms effectively. As a result, students may fail to maximize the benefits of digital library services available in their institutions.
In addition, inadequate funding affects the sustainability and development of digital library services. Some institutions are unable to subscribe to updated databases or maintain existing digital infrastructure because of financial challenges. This leads to limited access to quality academic resources and negatively affects students’ academic performance.
The problem of poor awareness and underutilization of digital library services also exists in some tertiary institutions. Some students are not adequately informed about the availability and importance of digital library resources. Consequently, they continue to depend mainly on printed materials and outdated sources of information.
Furthermore, there is insufficient empirical evidence on the extent to which digital library services influence students’ academic performance in tertiary institutions in Kaduna State. While several studies have examined digital libraries in Nigeria generally, there is limited research specifically focusing on tertiary institutions in Kaduna State.
If these challenges are not properly addressed, digital library services may fail to achieve their intended objectives of supporting teaching, learning, and academic excellence. Therefore, there is a need to assess digital library services and examine their relationship with students’ academic performance in tertiary institutions in Kaduna State.
