Project – Assessment of Leadership strategies and crisis management in the Redeemed christian church of God, Ogun state Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Leadership remains a central element in the functioning and success of every organization, regardless of its nature or purpose. It provides direction, fosters motivation, and ensures that the vision and mission of the institution are achieved. In religious organizations, leadership extends beyond administrative duties to encompass spiritual guidance and moral oversight. It determines how effectively the church fulfills its divine mandate of evangelism, discipleship, and community development. The ability of leaders to influence and coordinate followers, especially during challenging times, often determines the sustainability of the organization (Adejumo, 2020). Thus, leadership in religious settings demands a unique blend of spiritual maturity, emotional intelligence, and administrative competence.
In churches, leadership is expected to reflect biblical values such as integrity, humility, accountability, and servant-heartedness. However, churches are not exempt from organizational crises, as they operate within human and social systems that are prone to conflict and misunderstanding. Crises in churches may stem from various sources including doctrinal disputes, competition for leadership positions, financial mismanagement, or moral misconduct among leaders and members (Akinola, 2021). When these issues arise, they can weaken the spiritual health of the congregation, create divisions, and undermine the credibility of the church before its members and the wider community. Therefore, effective leadership strategies are indispensable for maintaining unity, trust, and a shared vision among followers.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) offers a significant case study in understanding leadership and crisis management in large religious organizations. Established in 1952 by Reverend Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi, the RCCG has grown into one of the most influential Pentecostal denominations in Nigeria and beyond, with thousands of parishes worldwide (Ukah, 2019). Its vision to take the gospel to every nation of the world has driven its expansion, creating a complex administrative structure that demands strong and coordinated leadership. Despite its spiritual successes and organizational achievements, the church has faced challenges typical of large institutions, including leadership transitions, resource management, and maintaining consistency in doctrine and ethics across its numerous branches.
As the RCCG continues to expand, leadership crises occasionally arise due to human ambition, differences in interpretation of church policies, and inadequate communication among various levels of authority. Instances of disagreements between pastors and parish leaders, complaints about financial transparency, and challenges in implementing directives from the national headquarters have been reported (Adejare, 2020). These conflicts, though sometimes subtle, can escalate into serious crises if not properly managed. Such situations test the competence, maturity, and spiritual discipline of leaders who must act swiftly and wisely to prevent division and maintain the integrity of the church’s mission.
Crisis management, in this context, refers to the systematic and proactive approach that leaders adopt to identify potential threats, prepare responses, and recover from disruptive events that could affect the church’s stability (Mitroff & Alpaslan, 2018). For a faith-based organization like the RCCG, crisis management involves not only organizational intervention but also spiritual discernment, forgiveness, and reconciliation. The application of sound leadership principles—such as transparent communication, inclusive decision-making, and adherence to biblical ethics—plays a crucial role in managing crises effectively (Oluwatosin & Oladele, 2022). Leaders who possess these qualities are better equipped to guide their congregations through difficult times while maintaining trust and unity among members.
Furthermore, leadership in the RCCG is built upon a hierarchical structure, with authority flowing from the General Overseer to regional, provincial, and parish pastors. This structure is designed to promote order, accountability, and uniformity in administration. However, it also presents challenges, especially when lower-level leaders feel marginalized or inadequately represented in decision-making processes. In Ogun State, where the church has a large concentration of parishes, such hierarchical complexities sometimes lead to friction among leaders. Effective leadership strategies must therefore balance authority with inclusiveness, ensuring that every level of leadership feels valued and empowered in the decision-making process.
The socio-economic realities in Nigeria also influence how leadership and crisis management unfold within the church. Economic hardship, unemployment, and political instability contribute to tension among members and sometimes exacerbate internal conflicts. In response, church leaders must develop crisis management approaches that are sensitive to these external pressures while upholding the church’s spiritual and moral standards (Akinola, 2021). A combination of administrative training, emotional intelligence, and reliance on divine guidance is crucial for navigating these multidimensional challenges successfully.
In light of these issues, assessing leadership strategies and crisis management practices within the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Ogun State, is both timely and relevant. Such an assessment provides a framework for understanding how leaders address conflicts, maintain organizational harmony, and uphold spiritual integrity. It also offers insights into the effectiveness of existing leadership approaches and suggests ways to improve them for better governance and crisis prevention. Ultimately, effective leadership and sound crisis management are indispensable for ensuring that the RCCG continues to fulfill its vision and sustain its growth in the face of internal and external challenges.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Leadership plays a central role in maintaining unity, direction, and stability within any organization, including religious institutions. In Nigeria, many churches have witnessed remarkable growth in membership and influence, but this expansion has also introduced complex administrative and interpersonal challenges. As the number of branches and leaders increases, issues such as ineffective communication, lack of transparency, and inadequate leadership training have become more pronounced (Akinola, 2021). Churches that fail to develop structured leadership and crisis management frameworks risk facing instability, internal strife, and a decline in their spiritual effectiveness.
Within the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), particularly in Ogun State, leadership challenges have been reported in various parishes, despite the church’s strong administrative system. The RCCG operates a hierarchical structure intended to ensure order and accountability; however, conflicts still emerge among leaders at parish, zonal, and provincial levels. These disagreements often stem from competition for recognition, misinterpretation of authority, or differences in leadership style and decision-making approaches (Adejare, 2020). Such crises, when not properly handled, can escalate into divisions that affect church attendance, morale, and cooperation among workers and members.
Moreover, leadership disputes within the RCCG are sometimes aggravated by poor communication and lack of accountability in financial or administrative matters. Instances of misunderstanding between senior and junior pastors, as well as among members of the church management committees, occasionally result in mistrust and reduced cooperation. These conflicts not only distract from the church’s spiritual mission but also diminish the confidence of members in their leaders. In a faith-based institution where moral integrity and unity are central values, such occurrences can seriously undermine the credibility of the leadership and the reputation of the church.
Although the RCCG upholds biblical principles of forgiveness, humility, and reconciliation, the recurrence of crises suggests that these spiritual teachings alone may not be sufficient to prevent or resolve leadership conflicts. Human weaknesses, emotional reactions, and organizational complexities often interfere with the practical application of these values. Many leaders may lack formal training in conflict resolution, administrative management, or emotional intelligence, making it difficult for them to handle crises objectively. This raises the question of whether the current leadership strategies adopted in RCCG parishes are adequate for managing modern organizational and interpersonal challenges effectively.
The persistence of leadership crises in RCCG, despite its long history and structured system, reveals a critical gap in leadership practice and crisis management. While some parishes may successfully manage conflicts through dialogue and spiritual intervention, others experience prolonged disputes that affect growth and member retention. This inconsistency suggests that leadership strategies differ in their effectiveness and that there is a need to understand what approaches produce positive outcomes. Without such an understanding, the church risks repeating cycles of conflict that could hinder its mission and weaken its internal cohesion.
Therefore, this study seeks to assess the leadership strategies employed by RCCG leaders in Ogun State and evaluate their effectiveness in managing crises. By identifying the specific leadership styles, conflict resolution mechanisms, and administrative practices in place, the study aims to provide empirical evidence on how leadership approaches influence crisis outcomes within the church. The findings will help close the existing knowledge gap, offering practical recommendations for strengthening leadership effectiveness, enhancing unity, and promoting sustainable growth within the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study holds significant academic value as it contributes to the existing body of knowledge on leadership and crisis management within faith-based organizations. While numerous studies have examined these themes in corporate and governmental settings, fewer have focused on religious institutions—particularly within the Nigerian context where churches play a major socio-economic and moral role. By examining the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Ogun State, this study fills a gap in literature by exploring how leadership strategies function in a spiritual environment where both divine guidance and administrative structure coexist. The findings will thus enrich the field of organizational leadership, theology, and management studies by providing empirical data and contextual analysis relevant to scholars and researchers.
In practical terms, the study is highly beneficial to church leaders, especially those in the RCCG, as it provides insights into effective leadership strategies for managing crises and maintaining unity within their congregations. Many church leaders face the challenge of resolving conflicts that arise from doctrinal disputes, power struggles, or miscommunication. This research will help them identify the leadership styles that foster harmony, encourage collaboration, and minimize division. It will also assist in improving decision-making processes and enhancing leaders’ ability to balance spiritual authority with administrative responsibility, thereby strengthening overall church management.
Furthermore, the study has immense value for theological seminaries and leadership training institutions. These institutions are responsible for equipping future pastors, ministers, and administrators with the necessary skills to lead effectively in a dynamic religious environment. The insights derived from this study can serve as instructional material in leadership and pastoral administration courses. It will also provide case-based examples of how crises emerge and are managed within a large Pentecostal organization such as the RCCG. In this way, the study contributes not only to theory but also to the practical formation of competent, emotionally intelligent, and spiritually grounded leaders.
Policy makers and administrators within the RCCG and other large denominations can also benefit from the outcomes of this research. The study highlights the importance of having well-defined structures, transparent governance systems, and proactive crisis management frameworks in place. Its findings can inform the development or review of policies that promote accountability, inclusiveness, and effective communication within church hierarchies. In the long run, this could reduce organizational friction and enhance the credibility and sustainability of the church as an institution committed to both spiritual and social transformation.
Beyond the church environment, the study’s implications extend to the broader Nigerian society, where leadership crises and poor conflict management often undermine institutional effectiveness. The lessons drawn from RCCG’s leadership experiences can be applied to other faith-based and non-governmental organizations facing similar challenges. In a country where religious organizations significantly influence moral behavior and community development, promoting effective leadership and conflict resolution can have positive ripple effects on national unity, peacebuilding, and ethical governance.
Lastly, this study will serve as a reliable reference material for future researchers interested in exploring the relationship between leadership strategies and crisis management within the religious sector. It provides a framework for comparative studies across denominations or faith traditions and offers a foundation upon which subsequent research can build. By documenting both the successes and challenges of leadership within the RCCG, the study contributes to ongoing conversations about how churches can remain spiritually vibrant, administratively efficient, and socially relevant in the face of internal and external pressures.
