Project – Assessment of Mental Health Awareness and Coping Strategies Among Undergraduate Students of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Mental health has become one of the most significant public health concerns globally, particularly among young adults who are undergoing major biological, psychological, social, and academic transitions. The period of undergraduate education represents an important stage of human development where individuals experience increased independence, academic demands, career uncertainty, social adjustments, and personal responsibilities. While university education provides opportunities for intellectual growth and social development, it may also expose students to psychological challenges that negatively affect their emotional wellbeing, academic performance, social relationships, and overall quality of life.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as a state of wellbeing in which individuals recognize their abilities, cope with normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute to their communities (WHO, 2022). Mental health is not merely the absence of mental disorders but involves emotional stability, psychological resilience, and the ability to effectively manage daily challenges. Among university students, maintaining good mental health is essential because psychological wellbeing influences learning capacity, academic achievement, decision-making abilities, interpersonal relationships, and future professional development.
Globally, mental health disorders represent a major burden among adolescents and young adults, with many conditions beginning during late adolescence and early adulthood. The WHO reports that approximately one in seven adolescents experiences a mental health condition, while anxiety and depressive disorders remain among the leading causes of illness and disability among young people (WHO, 2021). University students constitute a particularly vulnerable population because they face multiple stressors associated with academic responsibilities, examinations, financial difficulties, social expectations, and uncertainty about employment opportunities after graduation.
The university environment can significantly influence students’ psychological wellbeing. Academic pressure arising from heavy workloads, competition, deadlines, examinations, and expectations for high achievement may contribute to stress, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion. Additionally, students who relocate from their homes to university environments may experience challenges related to independence, loneliness, adjustment difficulties, and reduced social support. These challenges may increase vulnerability to psychological distress if appropriate coping mechanisms and support systems are unavailable.
Mental health awareness, also referred to as mental health literacy, plays a crucial role in identifying, preventing, and managing mental health challenges among university students. Mental health awareness involves knowledge and understanding of mental health conditions, their causes, symptoms, treatment options, and available support services. Adequate mental health awareness enables individuals to recognize psychological difficulties early, reduce misconceptions, seek appropriate assistance, and support others experiencing mental health challenges (Jorm, 2012). Conversely, poor mental health awareness may contribute to stigma, misconceptions, delayed help-seeking, and worsening psychological conditions.
Despite increasing global attention toward mental health promotion, many university students continue to demonstrate limited knowledge about mental health conditions and available support services. A lack of awareness may lead students to interpret psychological symptoms as personal weakness, spiritual problems, or temporary challenges rather than conditions requiring professional support. This problem is particularly relevant in societies where mental health discussions are often affected by stigma, cultural beliefs, and limited access to psychological services.
Coping strategies are another important factor influencing students’ mental health outcomes. Coping refers to the cognitive and behavioural efforts individuals use to manage stressful situations and regulate emotional responses. According to Lazarus and Folkman’s (1984) Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, individuals respond differently to stress depending on their perception of the situation and available coping resources. Coping strategies may be adaptive, such as problem-solving, seeking social support, exercise, positive thinking, time management, and relaxation techniques, or maladaptive, such as substance use, avoidance, denial, and withdrawal.
Effective coping strategies contribute to psychological resilience and enable students to manage academic and personal challenges successfully. Students who utilize positive coping mechanisms are more likely to maintain emotional balance, achieve academic goals, and experience improved psychological wellbeing. However, students who rely on ineffective coping strategies may experience increased stress, anxiety, depression, poor academic performance, and reduced quality of life.
The relationship between mental health awareness and coping strategies is significant because knowledge about mental health can influence how individuals respond to psychological challenges. Students who understand mental health concepts are more likely to identify stress symptoms, adopt appropriate coping mechanisms, and seek professional support when necessary. Therefore, assessing both awareness and coping strategies provides a comprehensive understanding of students’ ability to manage mental health challenges.
In Nigeria, mental health among university students has received increasing research attention due to growing concerns about psychological distress, depression, anxiety, academic stress, and limited utilization of mental health services. Nigerian university students encounter various challenges, including academic competition, economic difficulties, insecurity, family expectations, unemployment concerns, and inadequate access to counselling services. These factors may negatively affect students’ psychological wellbeing and academic experiences.
Research among Nigerian university students has shown that anxiety, depression, and psychological distress are significant concerns. A study examining psychological wellbeing among undergraduate students in a Nigerian university reported substantial levels of anxiety and depression, with students adopting various coping methods such as social support, religious activities, and recreational activities to manage psychological challenges (Oladipo et al., 2021). Similarly, studies among university students in Lagos have identified stress and emotional difficulties as important concerns requiring early psychological interventions and student support systems.
The Nigerian cultural context also influences perceptions of mental health. Although awareness of mental health issues is gradually improving, stigma remains a major barrier to seeking psychological assistance. Some students may avoid counselling services due to fear of discrimination, concerns about confidentiality, or beliefs that mental health problems indicate personal failure. These attitudes may prevent early intervention and contribute to prolonged psychological difficulties.
The University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State, represents an important setting for examining mental health awareness and coping strategies among undergraduate students. As one of Nigeria’s leading universities, it attracts students from diverse social, economic, and cultural backgrounds. The university environment is characterized by academic competitiveness, demanding coursework, large student populations, and urban lifestyle pressures. While the institution provides academic and student support structures, students may still experience mental health challenges requiring adequate awareness and effective coping mechanisms.
Recent evidence among University of Lagos students has highlighted concerns regarding stress, psychological distress, and coping patterns. A study conducted among undergraduate students at the University of Lagos, Akoka, found that students experienced varying levels of perceived stress and utilized coping approaches such as active coping, planning, positive reframing, religious coping, and acceptance. These findings emphasize the importance of understanding how students recognize and manage psychological challenges within the university environment.
Furthermore, mental health awareness among undergraduate students has implications beyond individual wellbeing. Students represent future professionals, leaders, and contributors to society. Poor mental health among this population may affect academic success, career development, interpersonal relationships, and national productivity. Therefore, promoting mental health literacy and encouraging effective coping strategies among university students is essential for creating supportive academic environments.
Although previous studies have examined mental health challenges among Nigerian university students, limited attention has been given to the combined assessment of mental health awareness and coping strategies among undergraduate students at the University of Lagos, Akoka. Understanding students’ level of awareness, perceptions, and coping behaviours will provide evidence for developing effective mental health promotion programmes, strengthening counselling services, and reducing stigma associated with psychological support.
Therefore, this study seeks to assess mental health awareness and coping strategies among undergraduate students of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State. The findings will provide valuable information for improving student mental health initiatives and promoting psychological wellbeing within the university community.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Mental health challenges among university students have become an increasing concern worldwide due to their impact on academic performance, social functioning, emotional wellbeing, and future productivity. Although higher education institutions are expected to provide environments that support intellectual and personal development, many students experience significant psychological difficulties arising from academic pressure, financial constraints, social adjustment problems, family expectations, relationship challenges, and uncertainty about future employment. These challenges may contribute to increased levels of stress, anxiety, depression, emotional exhaustion, and other forms of psychological distress among undergraduate students.
Despite growing global recognition of the importance of student mental health, many university students continue to experience difficulties in identifying mental health problems and accessing appropriate support. One major challenge is inadequate mental health awareness, which affects students’ ability to recognize symptoms, understand causes, and seek professional assistance when experiencing psychological difficulties. Poor mental health literacy may lead to misconceptions, self-stigmatization, and delayed help-seeking, thereby allowing minor psychological concerns to develop into more severe conditions.
In Nigeria, mental health remains an under-prioritized public health issue despite the increasing evidence of psychological distress among young adults. Nigerian undergraduate students face several stressors, including demanding academic requirements, examination pressure, financial difficulties, inadequate learning resources, social challenges, and concerns about employment opportunities after graduation. These factors may negatively influence students’ psychological wellbeing and increase their vulnerability to mental health problems.
A major concern is that many students experiencing psychological distress may not seek professional help due to stigma, cultural perceptions, lack of awareness about available counselling services, or the belief that mental health challenges should be handled privately. In some Nigerian communities, mental health problems are still associated with negative stereotypes, which may discourage students from discussing their experiences or accessing psychological support. Consequently, students may rely on informal or ineffective coping mechanisms that do not adequately address underlying mental health challenges.
Coping strategies adopted by students significantly influence their ability to manage academic and personal stress. While some students employ positive coping strategies such as seeking social support, engaging in physical activities, practicing time management, maintaining positive thinking, and accessing counselling services, others may rely on maladaptive approaches such as avoidance, substance use, excessive withdrawal, denial, or unhealthy behaviours. The use of ineffective coping mechanisms may worsen psychological distress and negatively affect academic achievement and personal development.
The University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State, provides a unique environment for examining mental health awareness and coping strategies among undergraduate students. As a highly competitive university located within a major metropolitan environment, students are exposed to academic demands, social pressures, financial challenges, transportation difficulties, and expectations for academic excellence. Although the university provides student support services, including counselling facilities, there remains a need to understand whether students possess adequate awareness of mental health issues and whether they utilize effective coping strategies.
Furthermore, existing studies on mental health among Nigerian university students have often focused on the prevalence of depression, anxiety, stress, or psychological distress, while fewer studies have examined the combined relationship between mental health awareness and coping strategies among undergraduate populations. This creates a knowledge gap regarding how students’ understanding of mental health influences their ability to manage psychological challenges.
Another concern is the limited availability of institution-specific evidence regarding mental health literacy and coping behaviours among undergraduate students at the University of Lagos. Without accurate information about students’ awareness levels, beliefs, and coping patterns, it becomes difficult for university administrators, healthcare providers, and policymakers to design effective mental health promotion programmes tailored to students’ needs.
Therefore, there is a need to assess mental health awareness and coping strategies among undergraduate students of the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State. Such assessment will provide evidence on students’ understanding of mental health issues, identify common coping approaches, reveal existing gaps, and support the development of interventions aimed at improving psychological wellbeing, reducing stigma, and promoting a healthier academic environment.
