INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Food safety remains a major public health concern globally, particularly in developing countries where informal food systems dominate daily consumption patterns. In Nigeria, locally processed and packaged food products play a critical role in ensuring food availability, especially in densely populated urban centres such as Lagos. One of the most prominent commercial hubs for such food distribution is Balogun Market, Lagos Island, which serves as a major centre for wholesale and retail food trade.

Balogun Market is one of the largest and busiest markets in West Africa, characterized by high human traffic, diverse food products, and intensive commercial activities. Within the market, locally processed foods such as grains, spices, meat products, snacks, and beverages are commonly sold alongside packaged foods from both formal and informal manufacturers. These products are highly patronized due to affordability, accessibility, and convenience.

However, despite its economic importance, Balogun Market presents significant public health concerns regarding food hygiene and safety. Given the increasing dependence of urban populations on market-sourced foods, especially in Lagos, it is essential to evaluate the microbiological quality of these products. 1.2 Statement of the Problem

Therefore, the problem addressed in this study is the lack of empirical evidence on the microbial quality of locally processed and packaged food products in Balogun Market and the associated public health implications. This study seeks to fill this gap by systematically assessing microbial contamination levels in selected food products within the market.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to assess microbial contamination in locally processed and packaged food products in Balogun Market, Lagos Island.

Specific Objectives:

1. To determine the presence of microorganisms in selected locally processed and packaged food products sold in Balogun Market.
2. To identify the common pathogenic bacteria associated with these food products.
3. To assess the level of microbial contamination in sampled food products.
4. To evaluate the potential public health risks associated with consumption of these foods.

H₀ (Null Hypothesis):

H₁ (Alternative Hypothesis):
There is significant microbial contamination in locally processed and packaged food products sold in Balogun Market.

1.6 Significance of the Study

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to the assessment of microbial contamination in selected locally processed and packaged food products sold in Balogun Market, Lagos Island, Nigeria. It focuses on commonly consumed food items available within the market environment.
