Project – Assessment of Nutritional Knowledge and Dietary Practices Among Adolescents in Anyigba Metropolis

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Adolescence is a critical period of growth and development, characterized by rapid physical, cognitive, and psychosocial changes. Proper nutrition during this formative stage is essential, not only for supporting growth and development, but also for establishing lifelong dietary habits. Nutritional knowledge — understanding what constitutes a balanced diet, nutrients needed, and healthy eating patterns — plays a pivotal role in shaping adolescents’ food choices and eating behaviors (Benson et al., 2015).

In many low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria, adolescents often face nutritional challenges because of poor dietary practices, limited dietary diversity, and insufficient knowledge about healthy eating. For instance, a study of adolescents in Lagos found that although only about 47.4% had good nutritional knowledge, many exhibited poor dietary habits and low dietary diversity, with a notable prevalence of overweight and obesity among the group (Onyenekwe et al., 2022). Similarly, in private secondary schools in Lagos, respondents showed only fair nutritional knowledge and moderate feeding practices (Adepoju & Oladipo, 2019).

Furthermore, a recent investigation among in-school adolescents in Ogbomoso (Oyo State) revealed that though over half demonstrated “good” nutritional knowledge, actual healthy dietary practices — particularly consumption of fruits and vegetables — were suboptimal (Akinyele et al., 2020). Another study in Calabar reported that fewer than a quarter of adolescents practiced good dietary habits despite some level of awareness of nutrition and non-communicable disease (NCD) risks (Umar & Etuk, 2021).

These findings suggest a recurring pattern: adequate knowledge does not always translate into healthy dietary behavior. The gap between what adolescents know about nutrition and what they actually eat can lead to suboptimal nutrition, undernutrition, overweight, obesity, or other diet-related problems. As adolescence sets the stage for adulthood, poor dietary practices established during this time can increase lifetime risk for non-communicable diseases, poor health outcomes, and reduced quality of life.

Specifically for Anyigba — a metropolis with adolescent populations attending various secondary schools — limited data exist on nutritional knowledge levels and dietary practices among adolescents. However, studies conducted in nearby LGAs in Nigeria show significant correlations between dietary habits and nutritional status, underlining the relevance of such assessments in communities like Anyigba (Iorliam et al., 2021).

Given the critical importance of adolescence, and the known disconnect between nutritional knowledge and eating behavior, there is strong justification for assessing the nutritional knowledge and dietary practices of adolescents in Anyigba. Such a study will provide baseline data to inform stakeholders (school administrators, parents, public health officials) about existing gaps and guide the design of appropriate nutrition education and intervention programs tailored to the local context.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite growing recognition of the importance of healthy nutrition in adolescence, many adolescents in Nigeria — and likely in Anyigba — engage in poor dietary practices. Reports from prior studies indicate low to moderate nutritional knowledge, inadequate dietary habits (e.g., low intake of fruits and vegetables, skipping meals), and poor dietary diversity (Umar & Etuk, 2021).

In the absence of up-to-date, local data for Anyigba, stakeholders lack evidence on whether adolescents here are sufficiently knowledgeable about good nutrition, and whether this knowledge translates into healthy dietary behavior. This is problematic because poor nutrition in adolescence may undermine optimal growth, cognitive development, and long-term health; may contribute to undernutrition, overweight/obesity, or micronutrient deficiencies; and can predispose to non‑communicable diseases later in life (Benson et al., 2015; Onyenekwe et al., 2022).

Moreover, previous research in other Nigerian contexts has shown a disconnect between knowledge and practice: even when adolescents knew the importance of healthy eating, their actual consumption patterns remained poor (Adepoju & Oladipo, 2019; Umar & Etuk, 2021). Without understanding to what extent this gap exists among adolescents in Anyigba, it is difficult to design effective interventions or educational programmes to promote healthy eating and prevent malnutrition or diet-related health problems.

Therefore, the problem this study seeks to address is the lack of empirical data on the nutritional knowledge and dietary practices of adolescents in Anyigba metropolis — specifically, whether they possess adequate nutritional knowledge and whether this knowledge translates into healthy dietary behavior.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to assess the nutritional knowledge and dietary practices of adolescents in secondary schools in Anyigba metropolis. The specific objectives are to:

  1. Determine the level of nutritional knowledge among adolescents in Anyigba secondary schools.

  2. Describe the dietary practices (meal frequency, meal skipping, food choices, dietary diversity, fruit/vegetable consumption, snack/processed food consumption) among the adolescents.

  3. Examine the relationship (if any) between nutritional knowledge and dietary practices among these adolescents.

  4. Identify socio‑demographic or environmental factors (e.g., parental education, school type, socio-economic status) associated with nutritional knowledge and dietary practices.

  5. Provide recommendations for nutrition education interventions, school-based programs, or policy actions to improve adolescent dietary behaviors in Anyigba.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nutritional knowledge among adolescents in secondary schools in Anyigba?

  2. What are the prevailing dietary practices among these adolescents?

  3. Is there a significant relationship between adolescents’ nutritional knowledge and their dietary practices?

  4. What socio‑demographic or environmental factors are associated with nutritional knowledge and dietary practices among adolescents in Anyigba?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀ (Null Hypothesis): There is no significant relationship between nutritional knowledge and dietary practices among adolescents in secondary schools in Anyigba.
H₁ (Alternative Hypothesis): There is a significant relationship between nutritional knowledge and dietary practices among adolescents in secondary schools in Anyigba.

1.6 Significance of the Study

  • The study will generate baseline data on adolescent nutrition knowledge and dietary practices in Anyigba, a community for which limited data currently exist.

  • Findings will inform school administrators, public health officials, parents, and community stakeholders about the nutritional gaps and needs among adolescents — guiding the design of tailored nutrition education programs, school feeding policies, or interventions to improve dietary behaviors.

  • The research will contribute to the broader literature on adolescent nutrition in Nigeria, adding context-specific insights from Anyigba, and potentially serve as a reference for future studies or comparisons across regions.

  • By identifying factors associated with poor dietary practices (e.g., socio-economic status, parental education, school type), the study can help policymakers target vulnerable groups with appropriate nutrition interventions.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study will focus on adolescents (age range ~ 10–19 years) enrolled in secondary schools within Anyigba metropolis. Both male and female students will be included, across public and private schools where applicable. The assessment will cover nutritional knowledge (understanding of what constitutes a balanced diet, dietary sources, nutrient functions, etc.) and dietary practices (meal frequency and regularity, food choices, consumption of fruits/vegetables vs. processed foods, meal skipping, dietary diversity). The study will also consider socio‑demographic variables (age, gender, school type, parental education, socio-economic status) to explore their association with knowledge and practices.

1.8 Definition of Terms

  • Nutritional Knowledge: Understanding of nutrients, sources of nutrients, balanced diet, dietary recommendations, diet–disease relationships, and healthy eating principles (Benson et al., 2015).

  • Dietary Practices: The actual eating behaviors and habits of individuals — meal frequency, food choices, consumption of fruits/vegetables, snack/processed food intake, meal skipping, dietary diversity, etc. (Adepoju & Oladipo, 2019).

  • Adolescents: In the context of this study, secondary school students typically aged between about 10 to 19 years (Benson et al., 2015).

  • Dietary Diversity: Variety of different foods/food groups consumed over a reference period — an indicator of nutritional quality (Onyenekwe et al., 2022).

  • Anyigba Metropolis: The urban and semi-urban area where the selected secondary schools for this study are located.
