INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Religious education plays a critical role in shaping the moral, spiritual, and intellectual development of individuals. Among adults, biblical literacy is essential for deepening understanding of Christian doctrines, guiding ethical behavior, and fostering active participation in church and community life (Adeyemo, 2016). Biblical literacy refers to the ability to read, comprehend, interpret, and apply the teachings of the Bible in daily life. While much attention is often given to the religious education of children and youth, adult biblical literacy is equally important, as adults often serve as moral guides within families, churches, and communities.

Pastoral teaching, which encompasses sermons, Bible studies, workshops, and mentorship programs led by pastors or church leaders, is a primary method for promoting biblical literacy among adults. Effective pastoral teaching not only conveys biblical knowledge but also equips adults with interpretative skills, practical applications of scripture, and critical reflection on faith and life challenges (Smith, 2015). Teaching methods can vary widely, from lecture-based sermons to interactive Bible studies, group discussions, storytelling, question-and-answer sessions, and multimedia-enhanced presentations. The choice of teaching method can significantly influence adult learners’ engagement, retention, and application of biblical knowledge.

Jos North Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State is a cosmopolitan region with diverse religious and cultural populations. Christianity is prominent, and churches play a central role in both spiritual life and community development. Despite the prevalence of church programs, there are concerns about the varying levels of adult biblical literacy in the area. Some adults demonstrate a profound understanding of biblical texts and teachings, while others struggle to comprehend or apply biblical principles in their daily lives (Okeke, 2017).

The effectiveness of pastoral teaching methods in enhancing adult biblical literacy may be influenced by several factors, including the pastor’s teaching style, educational background, communication skills, use of resources, frequency of instruction, and engagement strategies. Additionally, adult learners may face challenges such as competing work schedules, low literacy levels, cultural barriers, and limited access to study materials, which may affect learning outcomes (Hernandez, 2018). Understanding how different pastoral teaching methods impact adult biblical literacy is essential for developing effective strategies that promote lifelong religious education and personal spiritual growth.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the widespread implementation of pastoral teaching programs in churches within Jos North LGA, evidence suggests that adult biblical literacy remains inconsistent. Some adults exhibit deep biblical knowledge and regularly apply teachings in daily life, while others demonstrate limited understanding, weak engagement, or inability to interpret scripture independently (Okeke, 2017).

Several factors may contribute to this problem. First, the pastoral teaching methods employed in many churches may rely heavily on lecture-based sermons with limited interactive components, which may not cater to the diverse learning styles of adult learners. Second, adult learners face time constraints due to work, family responsibilities, and social obligations, which may limit their participation in church-based learning programs. Third, access to resources such as study guides, commentaries, and multimedia tools is often limited, reducing opportunities for independent study and reinforcement of biblical knowledge (Hernandez, 2018).

This gap between intended outcomes of pastoral teaching and observed adult biblical literacy highlights the need for empirical assessment. Without systematic research, church leaders and educators may be unaware of the effectiveness of their teaching methods or the need for innovation in instructional strategies. This study seeks to evaluate pastoral teaching methods and their impact on adult biblical literacy in Jos North LGA, Plateau State, thereby providing insights for improving religious education among adults.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to assess the impact of pastoral teaching methods on adult biblical literacy in Jos North LGA, Plateau State. The specific objectives are:

1. To identify the pastoral teaching methods used in churches within Jos North LGA.

2. To evaluate the level of biblical literacy among adult church members in Jos North LGA.

3. To examine the relationship between pastoral teaching methods and adult biblical literacy.

4. To identify challenges that affect the effectiveness of pastoral teaching in enhancing adult biblical literacy.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1. What pastoral teaching methods are commonly employed in churches within Jos North LGA?

2. What is the level of biblical literacy among adult church members in Jos North LGA?

3. What is the relationship between pastoral teaching methods and adult biblical literacy?

4. What challenges limit the effectiveness of pastoral teaching in improving adult biblical literacy?

1.5 Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: Pastoral teaching methods have no significant impact on adult biblical literacy in Jos North LGA.
H₁: Pastoral teaching methods have a significant impact on adult biblical literacy in Jos North LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study are expected to be beneficial in several ways:

• For pastors and church leaders: It will provide insights into effective teaching methods that enhance adult biblical literacy and spiritual growth.

• For adult learners: It will highlight the importance of engaging with various teaching methods to improve biblical understanding.

• For religious educators: It will inform strategies for designing adult-oriented Bible study programs and workshops.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on adult church members attending pastoral teaching programs in Jos North LGA, Plateau State. It examines the methods employed by pastors, the level of biblical literacy among adult learners, the relationship between teaching methods and literacy outcomes, and the challenges faced in the process. The study is limited to adults aged 25 years and above who regularly participate in church-based religious education programs.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• Pastoral Teaching Methods: Instructional approaches employed by pastors to convey biblical knowledge and Christian teachings to congregants.

• Adult Biblical Literacy: The ability of adults to read, comprehend, interpret, and apply the teachings of the Bible.
