INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study

In northern Nigeria, particularly Kano State, vegetable production plays a vital role in income generation and urban food supply due to favorable agro-ecological conditions and access to irrigation facilities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the economic importance of vegetable farming in Kano Municipal, smallholder farmers continue to experience inconsistent crop yields and declining productivity. Traditional irrigation methods dominate the farming landscape, leading to inefficient water use, high labor costs, and vulnerability to climate variability. Water wastage through flood irrigation contributes to soil nutrient leaching and reduced soil fertility, ultimately affecting crop performance.
Although smart irrigation technologies have demonstrated potential to enhance water efficiency and crop yield in various contexts, their adoption among smallholder vegetable farmers in Kano Municipal remains uncertain and possibly limited. Moreover, limited access to capital, inadequate technical training, poor awareness, and weak institutional support may hinder farmers from adopting innovative irrigation technologies. Without proper assessment, policymakers and agricultural development agencies cannot design effective interventions tailored to the needs of smallholder farmers.
The gap in literature specific to Kano Municipal creates uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of smart irrigation in improving vegetable yield under local socio-economic and environmental conditions. Therefore, there is a need for a systematic assessment of smart irrigation practices and their relationship with crop yield among smallholder vegetable farmers in Kano Municipal, Kano State.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess smart irrigation practices and crop yield among smallholder vegetable farmers in Kano Municipal, Kano State.
The specific objectives are to:

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be beneficial to smallholder farmers by providing insights into the benefits of smart irrigation technologies for improving vegetable yield and income. It will assist agricultural extension agents in designing targeted training programs that promote efficient water management practices.
Policymakers in Kano State will benefit from empirical evidence that can guide investments in irrigation infrastructure and technology subsidies. Development partners and non-governmental organizations will also gain valuable information to support climate-smart agriculture initiatives.
Academically, the study will contribute to existing literature on precision agriculture and irrigation management in Nigeria, particularly within urban and peri-urban vegetable farming systems.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on smallholder vegetable farmers in Kano Municipal Local Government Area of Kano State. It examines smart irrigation practices such as drip irrigation, sprinkler systems, soil moisture sensors, and automated irrigation scheduling, and their relationship with crop yield. The study is limited to selected vegetable crops commonly cultivated in the area and does not cover large-scale commercial farms.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Smart Irrigation: Technology-based irrigation systems that optimize water use through sensors, automation, and data-driven scheduling.
Crop Yield: The quantity of vegetable produce harvested per unit area of land within a farming season.
Smallholder Farmers: Farmers cultivating relatively small plots of land, typically less than 5 hectares, primarily using family labor.
