INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Rapid urbanization, population growth, and industrial expansion have significantly increased the generation of solid waste across the globe. Solid waste refers to unwanted or discarded materials arising from human activities, including household refuse, commercial waste, industrial by-products, construction debris, and healthcare waste. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), improper solid waste management poses serious risks to public health and the environment, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where waste collection and disposal systems are often inadequate.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) estimates that global municipal solid waste generation continues to rise due to economic development and changing consumption patterns. In many developing countries, municipal authorities struggle with insufficient funding, poor infrastructure, lack of technical expertise, and weak enforcement of environmental regulations. Consequently, waste is frequently disposed of in open dumps, drains, water bodies, and unauthorized sites, leading to environmental degradation and increased disease burden.
In Nigeria, solid waste management remains a persistent environmental challenge. Major cities generate thousands of tonnes of waste daily, yet collection efficiency remains low in many areas. Rapid urban growth, coupled with inadequate urban planning, has resulted in the proliferation of informal settlements lacking structured waste disposal systems. The composition of waste in Nigerian cities typically includes organic matter, plastics, metals, glass, paper, and hazardous materials, which require systematic segregation and treatment for safe disposal.
Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, is a major oil and gas hub in the Niger Delta region. The city has experienced rapid industrialization and population growth due to its strategic economic importance. As a result, waste generation has increased substantially over the past decades. Residential, commercial, and industrial activities contribute to the accumulation of solid waste in streets, markets, waterways, and open spaces.
Although the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) was established to oversee waste collection and disposal in Port Harcourt, several challenges persist. These include irregular waste collection, inadequate waste bins, traffic congestion affecting waste trucks, poor maintenance of disposal facilities, and limited public awareness of proper waste handling practices. Informal waste pickers also operate within the city, often without protective equipment, exposing themselves to health hazards.

Environmental health refers to the branch of public health concerned with how environmental factors affect human health. There is a pressing need to assess current waste management strategies and determine their impact on public health and environmental sustainability in the city.
This study therefore seeks to evaluate solid waste management practices in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and examine their environmental health implications.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Port Harcourt has witnessed rapid urban expansion driven by industrialization and economic activities associated with the oil and gas sector. This growth has significantly increased the volume of solid waste generated daily. However, the capacity of waste management systems has not kept pace with this growth. As a result, waste accumulation has become a recurring problem in residential neighborhoods, markets, and public spaces.
Improper disposal practices such as open dumping, roadside littering, burning of refuse, and discharge of waste into water bodies are common in some areas. These practices contribute to environmental pollution, degrade urban aesthetics, and threaten public health. During the rainy season, blocked drainage channels often result in flooding, which spreads contaminated waste materials into homes and streets.
Additionally, many residents lack awareness or motivation to practice waste segregation and proper disposal. Limited availability of waste bins and irregular collection services further discourage compliance with environmental regulations. Informal waste collectors operate under unsafe conditions, increasing their exposure to hazardous materials.
The environmental health consequences of poor waste management are substantial. Increased cases of malaria, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal diseases, and skin infections have been linked to unsanitary conditions in urban environments. Children, the elderly, and low-income populations are particularly vulnerable to these health risks.
Although policies and agencies exist to manage waste in Port Harcourt, there is insufficient empirical assessment of how effective these measures have been in protecting environmental health. Without a systematic evaluation of waste management practices and their health implications, policy responses may remain reactive rather than proactive.
The central problem of this study is the persistent inefficiency in solid waste management practices in Port Harcourt and the associated environmental health risks, despite the presence of regulatory frameworks and waste management agencies.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for policymakers, environmental agencies, and public health authorities in Rivers State. It will provide evidence-based insights into the effectiveness of existing waste management systems and their implications for environmental health.
The findings will assist the Rivers State Waste Management Agency in designing improved strategies for waste collection, recycling, and disposal. The study will also contribute to academic literature on urban environmental management in developing countries.
Furthermore, the research will raise public awareness regarding the health risks associated with improper waste disposal and promote community participation in sustainable waste management practices.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on solid waste management practices within Port Harcourt metropolis, Rivers State. It examines waste generation, collection, disposal methods, and associated environmental health implications. The research is limited to municipal solid waste and does not extensively cover hazardous industrial waste management.
