Project – Assessment of the Availability and Utilization of Sports Facilities in Selected Secondary Schools in Kaduna State, Nigeria
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Sports and physical education play a vital role in the holistic development of students by enhancing their physical fitness, mental alertness, teamwork, and discipline. Central to the effective delivery of sports and physical education programs is the availability and utilization of adequate sports facilities within schools. Facilities such as football fields, basketball courts, volleyball pitches, gymnasiums, and athletic tracks provide the necessary environment for practical participation in physical activities (Bailey, 2017).
In the Nigerian educational context, the National Policy on Education (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2014)recognizes physical education and sports as integral components of the school curriculum. The policy emphasizes the need for schools to provide adequate facilities to promote physical fitness, recreation, and character development among students. However, several studies have shown that many Nigerian secondary schools face challenges of inadequate sports infrastructure, poor maintenance, and limited utilization, especially in public schools (Adeniran & Adeyemi, 2020).
In Kaduna State, both public and private schools vary in the provision of sports facilities due to differences in funding, management, and prioritization of physical education. Public schools often suffer from dilapidated or non-existent facilities, while private schools, though better equipped, may underutilize existing facilities due to academic pressure or lack of trained personnel (Okoli & Musa, 2021). Consequently, students’ interest in physical education and participation in sporting activities has declined over time.
Assessing the availability, quality, and utilization of sports facilities is crucial because these factors directly influence students’ participation levels, skill acquisition, and attitude toward physical activity. When schools provide adequate and well-maintained facilities, students are more motivated to engage in sports, leading to improved health and social development (Eke, 2019). This study therefore evaluates the availability and utilization of sports facilities in selected secondary schools in Kaduna State, Nigeria, with a focus on how these facilities affect students’ interest in physical education.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of sports in promoting students’ physical and mental development, there is growing concern over the inadequacy and underutilization of sports facilities in many Nigerian secondary schools. In Kaduna State, observations reveal that several public schools lack basic facilities such as football fields, indoor gyms, and courts, while some private schools possess facilities that are either poorly maintained or rarely used. This situation undermines the objectives of physical education and limits students’ opportunities to develop sporting skills and lifelong fitness habits (Ogunyemi, 2018).
The lack of adequate sports facilities may lead to reduced student participation, low interest in physical education, and a decline in school sports competitions. Moreover, inadequate utilization of existing facilities—often due to poor management, lack of qualified instructors, or insufficient time allocation—further compounds the problem. It is therefore essential to assess both the availability and utilization levels of sports facilities to understand their impact on students’ interest and participation in physical education within Kaduna State secondary schools.
