CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Air pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges in urban areas worldwide. In developing countries such as Nigeria, rapid urbanization, industrialization, and population growth have significantly contributed to deteriorating air quality. Air pollution refers to the introduction of harmful substances such as particulate matter (PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere in quantities that pose risks to human health and the environment (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021).
In Nigeria, urban centers such as Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano experience increasing levels of air pollution due to vehicular emissions, industrial discharges, power generation through fossil fuels, open burning of waste, and construction activities (Akinyemi & Adejumo, 2020). The WHO (2022) estimated that air pollution is responsible for over 7 million premature deaths globally each year, with sub-Saharan Africa contributing a growing share due to weak regulatory enforcement and inadequate public awareness.
The health implications of air pollution are numerous and severe. Prolonged exposure to polluted air can lead to respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, and lung cancer, as well as cardiovascular complications, neurological disorders, and premature mortality (Ilyas, 2020). Children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions are particularly vulnerable. In Nigeria, research has linked high pollution levels in cities like Lagos and Port Harcourt to increased cases of respiratory infections and reduced life expectancy (Ezeh & Okwuosa, 2021).
Despite the public health significance of air pollution, awareness and policy response remain limited. Inadequate environmental monitoring systems, weak enforcement of emission standards, and lack of urban planning have exacerbated the situation (Federal Ministry of Environment [FMEnv], 2020). Assessing the effects of air pollution on the health of urban residents is therefore crucial for informing sustainable environmental and public health policies.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Urban air pollution has emerged as a major environmental and public health crisis in Nigeria. The exponential increase in the number of vehicles, use of diesel generators, and industrial emissions have resulted in air quality levels exceeding safe limits recommended by WHO standards. However, there is limited empirical evidence on the specific health outcomes associated with exposure to air pollution in Nigeria’s urban areas.
Many urban dwellers continue to experience recurrent respiratory illnesses and related health conditions without recognizing the environmental causes (Olowoporoku, 2021). Hospitals in major cities often report rising cases of asthma, chronic cough, and bronchial infections, particularly among children and low-income populations living near industrial zones and highways (Adedeji et al., 2022). Yet, public health interventions are rarely designed with consideration for environmental determinants such as air quality.
This study seeks to fill this gap by assessing the effects of air pollution on the health of residents in selected urban areas of Nigeria. It will provide evidence-based insights into the relationship between exposure to polluted air and the prevalence of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases among city dwellers.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the effects of air pollution on the health of residents in urban areas of Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:

1.4 Research Questions
The study will be guided by the following research questions:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following hypothesis:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between air pollution exposure and the health of residents in urban areas of Nigeria.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between air pollution exposure and the health of residents in urban areas of Nigeria.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons. First, it contributes to academic knowledge by providing empirical evidence on the health impacts of air pollution in Nigeria’s urban settings. Second, it will assist policymakers, environmental health officers, and urban planners in designing effective interventions for reducing exposure to harmful air pollutants. Third, public health agencies and NGOs can use the findings to create awareness campaigns that educate the public on preventive measures and behavioral adaptations.
Furthermore, the study will support Nigeria’s efforts to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 and 11 — which focus on good health and well-being, and sustainable cities and communities, respectively. By identifying the link between air pollution and health, the research encourages environmentally sustainable urban growth and improved quality of life.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on assessing the effects of air pollution on the health of residents in selected urban areas of Nigeria, such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. The study will consider major air pollutants including particulate matter (PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀), carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide. The health outcomes of interest include respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The temporal scope covers data and information from 2010 to 2024, reflecting recent urban growth and environmental trends.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Air Pollution: The presence of harmful or excessive quantities of substances such as gases, particulates, and biological molecules in the atmosphere that are detrimental to human health and the environment.

Urban Areas: Densely populated cities characterized by industrial activities, vehicular traffic, and residential development.
