INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Quarrying, the process of extracting rock, sand, gravel, and other minerals from the earth, is a critical component of construction and infrastructure development. However, its environmental implications are a growing concern in many developing regions, including Nigeria. According to Lameed and Ayodele (2010), quarrying operations contribute significantly to economic growth through the supply of raw materials for building and road construction, but they also generate a wide range of environmental problems. These include land degradation, air and water pollution, loss of biodiversity, and noise disturbances.
In Nigeria, the rapid pace of urbanization and infrastructural expansion has intensified quarrying activities across many states. Ebonyi State, particularly Ishiagu and Abakaliki, is well known for its abundance of solid mineral deposits such as limestone, granite, and lead-zinc ore (Nwibo et al., 2018). These resources have made the state a major center for quarrying activities in southeastern Nigeria. The industry contributes significantly to local employment and revenue generation, supporting both government and private sector development. However, these economic gains often come at the cost of severe environmental degradation, especially in communities close to quarry sites (Ezeaku, 2011).
In Ishiagu and Abakaliki, uncontrolled quarrying has resulted in deforestation, destruction of farmlands, and contamination of water bodies due to the discharge of waste materials and dust particles (Eze, 2018). Airborne particulates from blasting and crushing operations contribute to respiratory health problems among residents (Igbokwe et al., 2020). Furthermore, noise pollution from heavy machinery and explosions has become a persistent challenge, affecting both human health and wildlife habitats (Aigbedion, 2007). The cumulative effects of these activities raise serious questions about the sustainability of quarrying operations and the adequacy of existing environmental protection measures in the state.
Globally, sustainable mining and quarrying practices emphasize balancing economic development with environmental preservation (Hilson, 2012). Effective environmental management requires the assessment of potential impacts, enforcement of environmental regulations, and implementation of mitigation measures such as land reclamation, water treatment, and dust control (Oladipo, 2015). However, in many developing countries like Nigeria, environmental impact assessments (EIA) are either poorly implemented or not enforced, allowing operators to exploit natural resources without adequate consideration of ecological consequences (Adekoya, 2003).
Given the increasing environmental challenges in Ebonyi State, it becomes essential to assess the magnitude and nature of the impacts associated with quarrying. This study, therefore, seeks to evaluate the environmental consequences of quarrying activities in Ishiagu and Abakaliki, identify affected environmental components, and propose appropriate mitigation strategies for sustainable development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the economic importance of quarrying in Ebonyi State, its environmental effects have become alarming. In Ishiagu and Abakaliki, quarrying has led to significant land degradation, loss of vegetation cover, and displacement of communities (Eze, 2018). Dust emissions from rock blasting and crushing have deteriorated air quality, while runoff and waste discharges have polluted surface and groundwater sources (Nwibo et al., 2018). The affected communities often experience reduced agricultural productivity due to soil contamination and erosion (Ezeaku, 2011).
Although environmental laws such as the Environmental Impact Assessment Act of 1992 and the Mineral and Mining Act of 2007 exist in Nigeria, enforcement remains weak at the state and local levels. Many quarry operators fail to conduct adequate impact assessments before commencing operations, and environmental monitoring is often neglected (Oladipo, 2015). Consequently, there is limited empirical data on the extent of quarry-induced environmental degradation in Ebonyi State. This knowledge gap necessitates an in-depth assessment of the environmental impacts of quarrying in Ishiagu and Abakaliki to inform policy, regulation, and sustainable resource management.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the environmental impact of quarrying activities in Ebonyi State, focusing on Ishiagu and Abakaliki.
The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following hypothesis:
H₀: Quarrying activities have no significant impact on the environment in Ishiagu and Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
H₁: Quarrying activities have a significant impact on the environment in Ishiagu and Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons. First, it provides empirical evidence on the extent of environmental degradation resulting from quarrying activities in Ebonyi State, thereby contributing to environmental policy formulation and sustainable development planning. Second, the findings will assist government agencies, such as the Federal Ministry of Environment and the Nigerian Mining Cadastre Office, in enforcing environmental regulations and designing remediation programs. Third, it will serve as a useful guide for quarry operators to adopt environmentally friendly technologies and management practices. Lastly, the research will contribute to academic literature on environmental management, offering a foundation for further studies on quarrying and sustainable resource exploitation in Nigeria and other developing countries.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the environmental impacts of quarrying activities in Ishiagu and Abakaliki, two major quarrying zones in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The research will assess the effects of quarrying on land use, air quality, water resources, vegetation, and community health. The study period will cover 2015–2025, during which quarrying activities have significantly expanded in the region. Data will be obtained from field observations, interviews, questionnaires, and secondary sources such as government reports and academic publications.
