INTRODUCTION

• Background to the Study

The participation of women in Nigerian politics has been a subject of extensive academic and policy-oriented discussions, particularly in the last decade. Despite various international and national efforts to promote gender equality, women in Nigeria continue to face significant barriers to political participation. According to Aina (2013), cultural norms and patriarchal structures have historically marginalized women, limiting their roles in political decision-making processes. This marginalization is evident in the low representation of women in elective and appointive positions. For instance, the 2015 general elections saw only 5.6% of women elected into the National Assembly, a figure that slightly increased to 6.4% in the 2019 elections (Nwankwo, 2020).

One of the primary challenges identified in the literature is the socio-economic barriers that hinder women’s political participation. Poverty and lack of access to education disproportionately affect women, limiting their ability to engage in politics. As noted by Okeke (2017), financial constraints are a significant impediment, as political campaigns in Nigeria are capital-intensive. Women, who often have less access to financial resources compared to their male counterparts, find it challenging to compete effectively. Additionally, the political landscape in Nigeria is often characterized by violence and intimidation, which further discourages women from participating (Afolabi, 2018).

The role of political parties in either facilitating or hindering women’s participation is another critical area of focus. Political parties in Nigeria have been criticized for their lack of commitment to gender inclusivity. According to Oloyede (2016), party structures and processes are often male-dominated, with women relegated to less influential positions. This lack of internal democracy within parties means that women have fewer opportunities to emerge as candidates for elective positions. Furthermore, the absence of effective affirmative action policies within parties exacerbates the underrepresentation of women in politics (Oloyede, 2016).

Despite these challenges, there have been some positive developments and prospects for increased women participation in Nigerian politics. According to Afolabi (2018), the influence of these international frameworks has been crucial in shaping national policies and encouraging political reforms aimed at enhancing women’s participation.

Furthermore, while significant challenges remain, the prospects for increased women participation in Nigerian politics are promising. Continued advocacy, effective implementation of affirmative action policies, and the commitment of political parties to gender inclusivity are essential for achieving greater representation of women in politics. As the literature suggests, addressing socio-economic barriers, ensuring internal party democracy, and leveraging international frameworks are critical steps towards enhancing women’s political participation in Nigeria. Future research should focus on evaluating the effectiveness of current policies and exploring innovative strategies to overcome the persistent barriers to women’s political engagement.

• Statement of the Problem

Additionally, there have been calls for legislative reforms to introduce quotas and other affirmative action measures aimed at increasing women’s representation in political offices.

4. To assess the impact of existing policies and initiatives aimed at promoting women’s participation in Nigerian politics.

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: The level of women’s participation in Nigerian politics have no significant effect on Nigeria Government.

H1: The level of women’s participation in Nigerian politics have significant effect on Nigeria Government.

• Significance of the Study

The study examines the assessment of women participation in Nigerian Politics.challenges and prospects 2013-2023. The study is limited to women participation in Nigeria Politics from three selected Political Parties, APC, PDP and LP..

1.8. Operational Definition of Terms

Assessment: The process of evaluating or measuring the quality, value, or significance of something. In various contexts, it can refer to analyzing performance, outcomes, or progress.

Women Participation: The involvement of women in various activities, roles, or sectors, particularly in decision-making processes, governance, and political participation. It encompasses aspects like voting, running for office, and influencing policy.

Nigerian Politics: The political landscape and governance of Nigeria, characterized by a federal system of government. It includes various political parties, electoral processes, and the dynamics of power among ethnic, religious, and regional groups.

Challenges: The obstacles or difficulties that hinder progress or success in a particular area. In the context of women’s participation in Nigerian politics, challenges might include cultural norms, gender discrimination, lack of access to resources, and violence.

Prospects: The potential opportunities or positive outcomes for future development.
