Project – Biblical Conflict Resolution and Its Impact on Marital Satisfaction Among Christian Families
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Marriage is a divine institution established by God for companionship, procreation, emotional support, and societal stability. In Christian teaching, marriage is regarded as a sacred covenant between a man and a woman founded on love, commitment, mutual respect, and spiritual unity (Genesis 2:24). The family, which emerges from marriage, serves as the foundational unit of society and plays a significant role in moral, spiritual, and social development. Consequently, the stability and satisfaction experienced within marriage are important not only for couples and their children but also for the broader society.
Despite the sacred nature of marriage in Christianity, marital conflicts have become increasingly common among Christian families worldwide, including Nigeria. Conflicts arising from communication breakdown, financial disagreement, infidelity, sexual incompatibility, unmet expectations, poor emotional management, and external pressures have contributed to growing cases of marital dissatisfaction, separation, and divorce (Karney & Bradbury, 2020). Even among devout Christian families who actively participate in church activities, marital conflicts remain a significant concern.
Conflict is generally understood as a disagreement or misunderstanding between individuals resulting from differences in opinions, expectations, values, or interests. In marriage, conflict is inevitable because couples come from different family backgrounds, personalities, experiences, and orientations. While conflict itself is not necessarily destructive, the methods used in resolving conflict largely determine whether marriage becomes stable or unstable (Gottman & Silver, 2015). Constructive conflict resolution can strengthen marital relationships, whereas unresolved or poorly managed conflicts can lead to emotional distance, resentment, violence, and eventual marital breakdown.
Biblical conflict resolution refers to the process of resolving disagreements and interpersonal disputes using principles and teachings derived from the Bible. Such principles include forgiveness, love, humility, patience, effective communication, reconciliation, mutual submission, and prayer. Scriptures such as Matthew 18:15–17, Ephesians 4:26–32, Colossians 3:13, and Proverbs 15:1 provide guidance on peaceful conflict management among believers. Christian marriage counsellors and church leaders frequently encourage couples to apply biblical teachings in handling marital disagreements.
The concept of marital satisfaction refers to the level of happiness, fulfillment, emotional connection, and contentment experienced by spouses in marriage. Marital satisfaction is influenced by communication patterns, emotional intimacy, trust, sexual compatibility, financial stability, spiritual harmony, and conflict management strategies (Olson & Olson-Sigg, 2013). Couples who successfully manage conflicts through constructive and respectful approaches tend to experience higher levels of marital satisfaction and long-term stability.
Biblical conflict resolution emphasizes forgiveness as a major tool for restoring broken relationships. Forgiveness enables couples to let go of bitterness, resentment, and anger after disagreements. According to Worthington (2017), forgiveness contributes significantly to emotional healing and relationship restoration within marriages. Christian teachings encourage spouses to forgive one another just as Christ forgives believers (Ephesians 4:32). This principle helps reduce hostility and promotes reconciliation in marital relationships.
Another important principle of biblical conflict resolution is effective communication. The Bible teaches believers to speak truthfully, gently, and wisely during disagreements (Proverbs 15:1). Poor communication has been identified as one of the major causes of marital dissatisfaction among couples (Adebayo, 2019). Through biblical teachings, couples are encouraged to listen attentively, avoid harsh words, express emotions constructively, and resolve issues peacefully. Such communication practices promote understanding and strengthen marital relationships.
Prayer and spiritual intimacy also play vital roles in biblical conflict resolution. Christian couples are encouraged to pray together, seek divine guidance, and depend on God during periods of marital disagreement. Shared spirituality has been found to enhance emotional bonding and relationship satisfaction among married couples (Mahoney, 2013). Prayer fosters humility, empathy, patience, and reconciliation, thereby contributing to healthier conflict resolution processes.
Furthermore, biblical conflict resolution encourages humility and mutual submission among spouses. Ephesians 5:21 instructs believers to submit to one another in reverence to Christ. This principle discourages pride, selfishness, and domination within marriage. Couples who practice humility are more likely to compromise, empathize with one another, and prioritize the well-being of the relationship over personal ego.
In contemporary Nigerian society, Christian families face numerous social and economic pressures that contribute to marital conflicts. Economic hardship, unemployment, inflation, social media influence, changing gender expectations, and declining moral values have intensified tensions within many homes. These challenges often create stress and misunderstandings that negatively affect marital satisfaction. Consequently, there is increasing need for effective conflict resolution strategies grounded in biblical principles.
Churches and Christian counsellors in Nigeria have continued to emphasize biblical approaches to marriage counselling and family life education. Marriage seminars, counselling sessions, conferences, and family enrichment programmes are organized regularly to equip couples with skills for handling marital conflicts biblically. However, despite these efforts, many Christian families still experience unresolved conflicts and marital dissatisfaction.
One major concern is that some Christian couples possess theoretical knowledge of biblical teachings without practically applying them in their marital relationships. Couples may attend church services and marriage programmes regularly yet struggle with anger management, communication problems, unforgiveness, and emotional disconnection. This suggests that awareness of biblical principles alone may not automatically guarantee successful conflict resolution.
Another issue is the growing influence of secular approaches to marriage and family life, which sometimes conflict with biblical teachings. Modern individualism, materialism, and social media culture have affected attitudes toward patience, commitment, forgiveness, and sacrifice in marriage. Some couples increasingly rely on external influences rather than scriptural guidance in handling marital issues.
Empirical studies have shown that constructive conflict resolution contributes positively to marital satisfaction and stability (Fincham & Beach, 2010). However, limited studies have specifically examined biblical conflict resolution and its impact on marital satisfaction among Christian families in Nigeria. Most available studies focus broadly on marital counselling, communication, or family relationships without concentrating on biblical conflict resolution as a distinct variable.
The increasing rate of marital dissatisfaction and divorce among professing Christians raises important questions regarding the effectiveness and practical application of biblical conflict resolution principles within Christian homes. There is therefore a need for further research to examine whether biblical conflict resolution significantly influences marital satisfaction among Christian families.
This study seeks to investigate biblical conflict resolution and its impact on marital satisfaction among Christian families. The study aims to assess how biblical principles such as forgiveness, communication, humility, prayer, patience, and reconciliation contribute to marital happiness, stability, and emotional fulfillment among Christian couples.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Marital conflict has become one of the major challenges confronting families in contemporary society, including Christian homes. Despite the emphasis Christianity places on love, peace, forgiveness, and unity, many Christian families continue to experience persistent conflicts that negatively affect marital satisfaction and family stability. Cases of emotional separation, domestic violence, communication breakdown, infidelity, bitterness, and divorce are increasingly being reported among Christian couples in Nigeria.
The Bible provides clear principles and guidelines for resolving interpersonal conflicts peacefully. Christian teachings encourage spouses to practice forgiveness, humility, patience, mutual understanding, reconciliation, and prayer when handling marital disagreements. Churches and Christian counsellors frequently teach these biblical principles through sermons, marriage seminars, counselling sessions, and family life programmes. Nevertheless, many Christian couples still struggle with unresolved conflicts and marital dissatisfaction.
One major problem is that some Christian couples possess knowledge of biblical teachings but fail to apply such teachings practically in their marital relationships. Anger, pride, poor communication, unforgiveness, and selfishness continue to undermine marital harmony among many Christian families. As a result, conflicts that could have been resolved peacefully often escalate into long-term emotional tension and separation.
Another problem is the influence of socio-economic pressures and modern societal changes on family relationships. Financial hardship, unemployment, changing gender roles, technological distractions, and social media exposure have contributed significantly to marital conflicts in many homes. These challenges sometimes weaken couples’ commitment to biblical principles of patience, sacrifice, and mutual support.
Furthermore, some churches focus more on doctrinal teachings and spiritual activities without adequately equipping couples with practical conflict resolution skills needed for everyday marital interactions. Consequently, Christian couples may struggle to translate biblical teachings into effective conflict management practices within their homes.
There is also limited empirical research specifically examining the impact of biblical conflict resolution on marital satisfaction among Christian families in Nigeria. Existing studies have largely concentrated on general marital counselling, communication, or family stability without paying sufficient attention to biblical conflict resolution as a major factor influencing marital satisfaction.
The persistent occurrence of marital dissatisfaction and instability among Christian families despite widespread exposure to biblical teachings creates the need for further investigation. It is against this background that this study seeks to examine biblical conflict resolution and its impact on marital satisfaction among Christian families.
