INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Contentment is a major biblical virtue that emphasizes satisfaction with one’s life condition and trust in God’s provision. In the New Testament, Paul teaches that “godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6), stressing that true fulfillment is not found in material possessions but in a relationship with God. Similarly, Hebrews 13:5 encourages believers to avoid covetousness and instead be satisfied with what they have, because God’s presence guarantees security and provision.

The Old Testament also reinforces this principle. Wisdom literature such as Proverbs warns against greed and excessive pursuit of wealth, while Ecclesiastes highlights the emptiness of material accumulation without spiritual fulfillment. These teachings collectively present contentment as a divine expectation for moral and spiritual stability.

In contemporary scholarship, contentment is often described as a psychological and spiritual state of satisfaction independent of material wealth (Oyeniyi, 2025). It is considered a key Christian response to materialism and greed, particularly in societies facing economic inequality and consumer-driven lifestyles (Oyeniyi, 2025).

Materialism, on the other hand, is defined as a value system that places excessive importance on wealth, possessions, and external success as indicators of happiness and identity (Belk, 2020). In modern Nigerian society, materialism is increasingly shaped by globalization, economic hardship, and social media culture. Platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok promote lifestyles centered on luxury, success display, and consumption, thereby influencing individuals’ perception of self-worth.

Studies show that Nigerian youths are particularly affected by this trend, often associating success with material acquisition rather than moral or spiritual development (Ukeachusim, 2022). This has contributed to increased pressure for quick wealth, social comparison, and in some cases unethical behaviors such as cybercrime and corruption (Ukeachusim, 2022).

Furthermore, Diara, Onukwufor, and Uroko (2020) argue that the commercialization of religion in Nigeria is partly fueled by lack of contentment, as individuals seek material solutions even within religious spaces. This suggests a growing tension between biblical values and contemporary lifestyle expectations.

Despite the strong presence of Christianity in Nigeria, the influence of biblical contentment appears to be weakening in practice. Many professing Christians continue to pursue material success as a primary life goal, reflecting a contradiction between belief and behavior.

Therefore, this study examines biblical principles of contentment and their influence on materialism in modern Nigerian society, with the aim of understanding how Scripture shapes or fails to shape contemporary lifestyle choices.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Although Christianity is widely practiced in Nigeria and biblical teachings on contentment are frequently preached, materialistic attitudes continue to increase among individuals, including Christians. Success is increasingly measured by wealth, luxury, and social status rather than spiritual values or moral integrity.

One of the most pressing issues is the rising desire for quick wealth among Nigerian youths. This has contributed to an increase in cybercrime, fraud, ritual practices, and other forms of unethical behavior. Ukeachusim (2022) notes that many youths equate material acquisition with success, leading to destructive life choices and moral decline.

In addition, social media platforms have intensified comparison culture, where individuals constantly measure their lives against others’ displayed lifestyles. This creates dissatisfaction and a continuous desire for more possessions, even when basic needs are met.

There is also a growing disconnect between biblical teachings and lived experience. While teachings on contentment are widely available in churches, many believers still prioritize material accumulation over spiritual growth. Oyeniyi (2025) observes that contentment is often preached but not fully practiced, leading to inconsistency in Christian ethical behavior.

Furthermore, Diara et al. (2020) argue that lack of contentment has contributed to the commercialization of religion in Nigeria, where spiritual spaces are sometimes influenced by material expectations and financial motivations.

Despite biblical warnings against greed and materialism (Luke 12:15; 1 Timothy 6:6–10), there is limited empirical understanding of how these teachings influence behavior in modern Nigerian society. This gap creates a need for systematic investigation into the relevance and impact of biblical contentment in addressing materialism.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine biblical principles of contentment and their influence on materialism in modern Nigerian society.

Specifically, the study aims to:

1. examine the biblical concept of contentment in Scripture;
2. assess the prevalence of materialism in modern Nigerian society;
3. determine the influence of biblical teachings on attitudes toward wealth and possessions;
4. explore the relationship between Christian values and materialistic lifestyle choices.

1.4 Research Questions

The study is guided by the following research questions:

1. What does the Bible teach about contentment?
2. How prevalent is materialism in modern Nigerian society?
3. To what extent do biblical teachings influence attitudes toward wealth?
4. How do Christian values affect lifestyle choices in Nigeria?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it contributes to academic discourse on religion and social behavior by examining how biblical principles interact with modern materialistic culture.

It will assist church leaders in understanding the challenges facing the application of biblical contentment in contemporary society.

It will also help policymakers and social analysts understand how value systems influence youth behavior, especially in relation to materialism and economic ethics.

Finally, it provides a foundation for future research on Christianity, ethics, and consumer culture in Africa.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on biblical contentment and its influence on materialism in modern Nigerian society. It is limited to Christian teachings and does not extensively examine other religious traditions.

1.7 Methodology

The study adopts a qualitative and descriptive approach. It relies on biblical texts, peer-reviewed journal articles, and recent scholarly works (2020–2026) on contentment and materialism. Analysis is based on theological and sociological interpretation of relevant literature.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Contentment: A spiritual state of satisfaction rooted in trust in God rather than material possessions.
• Materialism: A value system that prioritizes wealth and possessions as indicators of success and happiness.
• Biblical Principles: Moral teachings derived from the Holy Bible.
