INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education is universally acknowledged as a key driver of national development, yet its quality and accessibility in Nigeria vary significantly between urban and rural areas. The integration of educational technology (EdTech)—which includes computers, projectors, internet resources, and e-learning platforms—has transformed teaching and learning globally by promoting interactive, student-centered instruction (Yusuf & Afolabi, 2019). However, in Nigeria, especially in rural areas, the implementation of educational technology remains limited due to infrastructural, economic, and human resource challenges (Adebayo, 2021).
Educational technology refers to the systematic use of technological tools and processes to facilitate teaching and learning (Kirkwood & Price, 2016). It encompasses hardware such as computers and projectors, as well as software and digital platforms like learning management systems, educational apps, and internet-based resources. These tools, when effectively integrated, have been shown to enhance learners’ engagement, improve teachers’ instructional delivery, and foster digital literacy (Anderson & Weert, 2020).
In Nigeria, government initiatives such as the National Policy on Information and Communication Technology in Education (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2019) aim to promote ICT integration across all educational levels. However, disparities in infrastructural development have resulted in unequal access between urban and rural schools (Eze, 2020). While urban schools in cities such as Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt are increasingly adopting digital teaching aids, many rural schools in states like Benue, Taraba, and Nasarawa still struggle with poor electricity supply, inadequate internet connectivity, and a lack of trained ICT teachers (Agbo & Ezeani, 2021).
The rural educational landscape in Benue State mirrors these challenges. Although the state government has recognized the potential of educational technology to enhance learning outcomes, the majority of rural schools lack functional ICT facilities and qualified personnel to operate them. Teachers often rely on traditional, lecture-based approaches that limit student engagement and digital competence (Ogwuche & Terkimbi, 2022). Nevertheless, opportunities exist for improvement through public-private partnerships, teacher training, and the use of low-cost digital tools that can be adapted to rural contexts (Olawale, 2020).
This study therefore seeks to examine the challenges and prospects of integrating educational technology in rural Nigerian schools, focusing on selected rural schools in Benue State.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite global recognition of technology’s role in transforming education, its integration in Nigeria’s rural schools remains slow and uneven. Factors such as inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, low digital literacy among teachers, and lack of technical support continue to impede progress (Okafor & Anene, 2019). As a result, students in rural areas are often excluded from the benefits of digital learning, creating a widening digital divide between rural and urban learners (Eze & Onwumere, 2020).
In Benue State, efforts have been made to introduce computers and ICT training programs in rural schools, but the impact has been minimal. Many of these schools lack reliable power supply, modern teaching aids, and stable internet access. Teachers also face difficulties in adapting to new technologies due to insufficient training and motivation (Oche & Akume, 2021). Consequently, the potential of educational technology to improve learning outcomes in these settings remains largely untapped.
This study therefore investigates the specific challenges facing rural schools in Benue State regarding educational technology integration, as well as the opportunities and strategies for improvement.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to assess the challenges and prospects of integrating educational technology in rural Nigerian schools, using selected rural schools in Benue State as a case study.
The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following hypothesis will be tested in this study:
H₀₁: There is no significant relationship between the availability of educational technology facilities and the level of technology integration in rural schools in Benue State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders in the Nigerian education sector. It provides empirical evidence on the state of educational technology integration in rural areas, thereby informing policy decisions and resource allocation.
For government agencies and educational planners, the study highlights infrastructural and human resource gaps that must be addressed to ensure equitable access to technology-based learning. For teachers, the study emphasizes the importance of professional development in ICT competence to improve instructional delivery.
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and development partners can also use the findings to design targeted interventions for improving digital literacy in rural communities. Academically, this study contributes to the growing literature on digital education in developing contexts, particularly in rural Nigeria, where technological inclusion remains limited.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on selected rural secondary schools in Benue State, covering institutions across the state’s three senatorial districts (Benue North-East, North-West, and South). It examines both public and community-based schools to provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and prospects of educational technology integration. The study emphasizes teachers’ and administrators’ perspectives on infrastructure, training, and implementation strategies. Urban schools are excluded from this research to maintain focus on rural education contexts.
