INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The Anglican Church in Nigeria, formally known as the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), is one of the largest Christian denominations in Africa with millions of members spread across dioceses nationwide. Since its establishment through missionary activities in the 19th century, the Church has played a significant role in evangelism, education, healthcare, moral development, and national transformation. Over the decades, it has grown into a structured ecclesiastical institution with archbishops, bishops, clergy, and lay leaders working collaboratively to advance its mission.

However, the 21st century has introduced new social, economic, technological, and spiritual dynamics that have significantly affected the operations and relevance of religious institutions globally, including the Anglican Church in Nigeria. Rapid globalization, digital transformation, urbanization, and cultural shifts have reshaped human behavior, values, and religious engagement. As a result, churches are now operating in an environment that is more complex and challenging than in previous centuries.

One of the major developments in the 21st century is the rise of secularism and declining religious commitment among younger generations. Many youths are increasingly influenced by social media, entertainment culture, and Western ideologies, which often conflict with traditional Christian teachings. According to Ojo (2021), contemporary Nigerian churches are experiencing a gradual decline in active youth participation due to competing cultural and technological influences.

In addition, the Anglican Church in Nigeria faces institutional and structural challenges such as leadership transitions, financial sustainability, theological diversity, and administrative efficiency. While the Church maintains a strong hierarchical structure, some dioceses struggle with resource management, leadership development, and effective implementation of church policies.

Furthermore, the rapid growth of Pentecostal and independent churches in Nigeria has created intense religious competition. These churches often adopt modern worship styles, media-driven evangelism, and prosperity-oriented messages that attract large followings, especially among young people. This has posed a challenge to traditional mainline denominations such as the Anglican Church, which is often perceived as more liturgical and conservative in worship style.

Technological advancement also presents both opportunities and challenges. While digital platforms provide avenues for online evangelism, live streaming, and communication, not all Anglican dioceses are adequately equipped or trained to maximize these tools effectively. This digital gap has limited the Church’s outreach potential in an increasingly online-driven society.

Moreover, socio-economic challenges such as poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and corruption in Nigeria also affect church members and reduce active participation in church life. These issues create emotional, financial, and spiritual burdens that impact both clergy and laity.

Despite these challenges, the Anglican Church remains a vital institution in Nigeria’s religious and social landscape. Therefore, there is a need to critically examine the challenges facing the Church in the 21st century and explore possible solutions that can strengthen its mission, relevance, and sustainability.

This study, therefore, investigates the challenges facing the Anglican Church in Nigeria in the 21st century and proposes possible solutions for effective ministry and growth.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite its long history, strong institutional structure, and widespread presence across Nigeria, the Anglican Church is currently facing several challenges that threaten its effectiveness and long-term sustainability in the 21st century.

One major problem is declining youth engagement. Many young people are gradually drifting away from traditional church structures, preferring more contemporary and emotionally engaging forms of worship found in newer denominations. This trend raises concerns about the future leadership and continuity of the Anglican Church.

Another significant issue is leadership and administrative challenges in some dioceses. While some church leaders demonstrate visionary and effective leadership, others struggle with administrative inefficiency, lack of innovation, and poor strategic planning. This inconsistency affects church growth and development.

Financial sustainability is also a major concern. Many parishes depend heavily on traditional sources of income such as tithes and offerings, which may be unstable due to economic hardship affecting members. Limited financial resources often hinder infrastructural development, mission expansion, and welfare programmes.

In addition, technological underutilization remains a challenge. Although the world has moved into a digital era, some Anglican dioceses still struggle to fully integrate digital tools into worship, evangelism, and administration. This limits the Church’s ability to reach wider and younger audiences.

Furthermore, there is increasing competition from Pentecostal and charismatic movements that attract large congregations through modern worship styles, media presence, and prosperity-focused teachings. This has led to membership mobility and reduced retention in some Anglican parishes.

The problem of this study, therefore, is the apparent gap between the Anglican Church’s historical strengths and its current struggles in adapting to 21st-century realities. These challenges, if not addressed, may hinder the Church’s relevance, growth, and effectiveness in Nigeria’s evolving religious landscape.

This study seeks to identify these challenges and explore practical solutions that can enhance the Church’s mission and sustainability.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the challenges facing the Anglican Church in Nigeria in the 21st century and possible solutions.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Identify the major challenges facing the Anglican Church in Nigeria.
2. Examine the causes of these challenges.
3. Assess the impact of these challenges on church growth and development.
4. Propose possible solutions for improving church effectiveness.

1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀ (Null Hypothesis):
There is no significant relationship between 21st-century challenges and the growth and effectiveness of the Anglican Church in Nigeria.

H₁ (Alternative Hypothesis):
There is a significant relationship between 21st-century challenges and the growth and effectiveness of the Anglican Church in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be significant to Anglican Church leaders by providing insights into contemporary challenges affecting the Church and practical solutions for improvement. It will assist bishops, priests, and lay leaders in strategic planning and effective ministry execution.

It will also contribute to academic literature in religious studies, church administration, and practical theology, particularly in the Nigerian context. Furthermore, it will be useful to students and researchers interested in ecclesiology and church development.

In addition, the findings of this study will help policymakers within the Church of Nigeria to design better strategies for youth engagement, digital evangelism, leadership development, and financial sustainability.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the Anglican Church in Nigeria, examining the challenges facing the Church in the 21st century and possible solutions. It considers both clergy and laity perspectives within selected dioceses where applicable.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Anglican Church: A Christian denomination within the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).
