CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Christianity is one of the major religions in Nigeria and plays a significant role in shaping the moral, social, and spiritual life of millions of people. Since the introduction of Christianity into Nigeria through European missionaries in the nineteenth century, the religion has spread widely across the country and has influenced education, governance, and social values. Today, Christianity is practiced in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in the southern and Middle Belt regions, including Benue State. Churches of various denominations have been established across the state, serving as centers for worship, teaching, evangelism, and community development. Despite the strong presence of Christianity, traditional religious beliefs and practices continue to exist alongside Christian practices, creating challenges for Christian faith and doctrine.

One of the major challenges facing Christianity in contemporary society is the persistence of idol worship. Idol worship refers to the reverence or devotion given to objects, images, symbols, or other created things instead of the one true God. In biblical teaching, idol worship is strongly condemned as it contradicts the worship of God alone. The Bible clearly states in the book of Exodus 20:3–5 that believers should have no other gods and should not make or bow down to graven images. Similarly, in the New Testament, Christians are warned to flee from idolatry and maintain pure devotion to God (1 Corinthians 10:14). These teachings emphasize the importance of exclusive worship of God in Christian faith.

However, in many African societies, including Nigeria, cultural and traditional practices have long included reverence for ancestral spirits, sacred objects, shrines, and traditional deities. Before the introduction of Christianity, these practices formed the foundation of religious life among many ethnic groups. Although many people have converted to Christianity, certain elements of traditional religion have continued to influence religious behavior. Scholars have noted that in some communities, Christians still participate in rituals or practices associated with idol worship, either openly or secretly, due to cultural pressure, fear of spiritual consequences, or strong attachment to traditional beliefs (Mbiti, 1991; Awolalu & Dopamu, 2005).

In contemporary Nigerian society, idol worship may appear in different forms. These may include the veneration of traditional deities, the use of charms and amulets for protection, participation in traditional rituals, or excessive reverence for material possessions and power. Some Christians may combine Christian worship with traditional religious practices, leading to a form of syncretism. Religious syncretism occurs when elements of different religious beliefs are blended together, often resulting in a distortion of original religious teachings. This situation presents a serious theological and pastoral challenge for church leaders who seek to uphold biblical teachings while ministering in culturally diverse communities.

The issue of idol worship is particularly relevant in states such as Benue State, where traditional cultural practices remain strong despite the widespread presence of churches. Many communities still maintain cultural festivals, ancestral rituals, and other practices that may conflict with Christian teachings. As a result, some church members may struggle to fully abandon traditional beliefs even after accepting Christianity. This creates tension between cultural identity and religious commitment.

Furthermore, the challenge of idol worship in contemporary society is not limited to traditional religious practices alone. Modern forms of idolatry have also emerged in the form of materialism, wealth obsession, political power, and celebrity worship. These modern forms of idolatry shift the focus of devotion away from God toward worldly possessions and achievements. The Bible warns believers against loving the world more than God (1 John 2:15–17). When individuals prioritize wealth, status, or personal ambition above spiritual values, such attitudes can be considered forms of idolatry.

Churches therefore play an important role in addressing the challenge of idol worship through teaching, discipleship, counseling, and evangelism. Pastors and church leaders are responsible for guiding believers to understand biblical teachings on true worship and helping them overcome practices that contradict their faith. Effective teaching on the dangers of idol worship and the importance of exclusive devotion to God can help believers strengthen their spiritual commitment and resist cultural pressures that promote idolatry.

Despite the efforts of churches to address this issue, idol worship remains a concern in some Christian communities. Some believers may continue to engage in traditional practices due to fear, ignorance, or lack of adequate biblical understanding. Others may see no conflict between Christian worship and traditional rituals, thereby creating doctrinal and spiritual challenges within the church. These realities make it important to examine how Christianity responds to the challenge of idol worship in contemporary society.

This study therefore focuses on examining Christianity and the challenge of idol worship in contemporary society, with particular attention to selected churches in Benue State. The study seeks to explore the extent to which idol worship influences Christian believers and how churches are addressing the issue through teaching, pastoral guidance, and spiritual formation. Understanding this relationship will contribute to the development of effective strategies for strengthening Christian faith and promoting authentic worship among believers.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Idol worship has historically been condemned in Christian doctrine because it contradicts the fundamental belief in the worship of one true God. The Bible clearly instructs believers to avoid idolatry and remain faithful to God alone. However, in many societies where Christianity exists alongside traditional religious beliefs, the challenge of idol worship continues to persist. In Nigeria, particularly in regions where traditional culture remains influential, some individuals who identify as Christians still engage in practices associated with idol worship.

In Benue State, Christianity is widely practiced and many churches have been established across the state. Despite this strong Christian presence, certain traditional religious practices still influence the spiritual lives of some believers. Practices such as consultation of traditional priests, use of charms or amulets, participation in traditional rituals, and reverence for ancestral spirits are sometimes reported among individuals who also attend church services. This situation raises concerns about the depth of Christian commitment and the effectiveness of church teachings on the issue of idolatry.

Another problem is that many Christians may not fully understand the biblical implications of idol worship. Some believers may participate in traditional practices without recognizing that such activities contradict Christian teachings. Others may feel pressured by family or community traditions to take part in cultural rituals even when such practices conflict with their faith. This creates a spiritual conflict between maintaining cultural identity and remaining faithful to Christian doctrine.

In addition to traditional practices, modern forms of idolatry such as excessive pursuit of wealth, materialism, and devotion to power or fame also pose challenges to Christian faith. In contemporary society, individuals may prioritize material success above spiritual values, thereby shifting their devotion away from God. These forms of idolatry are often subtle and may go unnoticed within Christian communities.

Church leaders are expected to address these issues through preaching, teaching, and pastoral guidance. However, the persistence of idol worship among some Christians suggests that existing approaches may not be fully effective. There is therefore a need to examine the nature and extent of idol worship among Christian believers and evaluate how churches are responding to the challenge.

The problem of this study therefore lies in the continued presence of idol worship practices among some Christians despite clear biblical teachings against idolatry and the active presence of churches. This study seeks to investigate how idol worship manifests in contemporary society and how selected churches in Benue State are addressing this challenge in order to promote genuine Christian worship and spiritual growth among believers.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to examine Christianity and the challenge of idol worship in contemporary society.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the nature of idol worship in contemporary society.

2. Investigate the factors contributing to idol worship among Christians in selected churches in Benue State.

3. Examine the effects of idol worship on the spiritual life of Christian believers.

4. Assess the role of churches in addressing the challenge of idol worship.

1.4 Research Questions

The study will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What forms of idol worship exist in contemporary society?

2. What factors contribute to idol worship among Christians in selected churches in Benue State?

3. What are the effects of idol worship on the spiritual life of believers?

4. How are churches addressing the challenge of idol worship among their members?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: Christianity has no significant influence on reducing idol worship among believers in selected churches in Benue State.

H₁: Christianity has a significant influence on reducing idol worship among believers in selected churches in Benue State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to several groups. Church leaders and pastors will benefit from the findings by gaining deeper understanding of the challenges posed by idol worship within Christian communities. This knowledge will help them develop effective teaching and pastoral strategies to guide believers toward true worship.

The study will also benefit Christian believers by increasing awareness of the dangers of idol worship and encouraging stronger commitment to biblical teachings. Through greater understanding, believers may be better equipped to resist cultural and societal pressures that promote idolatry.

In addition, theological scholars and students will benefit from the study as it will contribute to academic discussions on Christianity and cultural practices in African societies. The findings may also serve as reference material for future research on religion, culture, and spiritual transformation in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on Christianity and the challenge of idol worship in contemporary society. The research is limited to selected churches in Benue State. The study examines the forms of idol worship present in society, factors influencing such practices among Christians, and the role of churches in addressing the issue.

1.8 Definition of Key Terms

Christianity: A monotheistic religion based on the teachings of Jesus Christ and the belief in the worship of one true God.
