CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The concept of modesty in dressing has been an important subject of discourse within the Christian faith, especially among Pentecostal churches. Christianity upholds moral and spiritual standards that are expected to be reflected not only in conduct but also in appearance. Church leaders, as the visible representatives of the faith, play a vital role in modeling these standards for their congregations. However, with the rise of modern fashion trends and globalization, many church leaders and members find themselves navigating the tension between modesty and modern dressing (Adebayo, 2021).

In the early days of Pentecostalism in Nigeria, dressing among believers was characterized by simplicity, decency, and a strong emphasis on modesty. The outward appearance was seen as an expression of the inward holiness demanded by Scripture (Ojo, 2006). However, in recent years, the influence of Western culture, social media, and celebrity fashion has increasingly shaped the dress patterns of both church leaders and members. Consequently, questions have arisen regarding the limits of acceptable Christian dressing and the role of church leaders in guiding the flock toward modesty (Ajayi, 2019).

The Bible provides several passages that address the concept of modesty and appearance. For instance, 1 Timothy 2:9–10 encourages women to adorn themselves “in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety,” while 1 Peter 3:3–4 emphasizes the beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit over outward adornment. Church leaders, as custodians of biblical truth, are thus expected to model these principles in both teaching and practice. Yet, the definition of “modesty” has become increasingly subjective in a contemporary world that celebrates individual expression and style (Ekong & Oladipo, 2020).

In Pentecostal circles in Lagos—Nigeria’s most urbanized and fashion-conscious city—this tension is particularly evident. Churches are filled with young, educated, and socially mobile individuals who are influenced by modern aesthetics. As a result, the dressing styles of pastors, ministers, and worship leaders often reflect a blend of spirituality and trendiness. This evolution has sparked debates within and outside the church regarding whether such modern dressing undermines the message of modesty and holiness traditionally associated with Christian leadership (Oshun, 2022).

Understanding how church leaders interpret and balance modesty with modern dressing is crucial to maintaining moral integrity and guiding congregational behavior. This study, therefore, examines the relationship between church leaders, modesty, and modern dressing in three selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos, Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Over the years, Pentecostal churches in Nigeria have been characterized by their strong emphasis on holiness, sanctification, and moral uprightness—values that were traditionally expressed not only in conduct but also in physical appearance. In the early decades of Pentecostalism, both leaders and members were easily distinguished by their conservative mode of dressing, which symbolized spiritual devotion and moral discipline. Clothing was viewed as an external manifestation of an inner transformation, reflecting a life surrendered to Christ and separated from worldly values. However, recent developments indicate a growing departure from these long-held traditions as modern fashion trends begin to influence the appearance of church leaders in ways that challenge earlier notions of modesty (Ojo, 2006).

In recent times, there has been a noticeable drift among Pentecostal church leaders toward fashionable, luxurious, and sometimes extravagant dressing. The rise of social media platforms has further intensified this shift, with pastors and ministers often showcasing designer outfits, expensive shoes, jewelry, and accessories. This new image of leadership, while appealing to a younger and more fashion-conscious generation, raises theological and ethical questions about the compatibility of such appearances with the biblical call to modesty and humility. Some church leaders now adopt dressing styles that closely mirror secular celebrities, creating a blurred line between spiritual representation and worldly display (Okon, 2020).

This transformation in the appearance of Pentecostal leaders has also sparked debates within congregations and among theologians about the meaning and boundaries of modesty in contemporary Christianity. Traditionally, modesty has been associated with decency, restraint, and respect for the sacredness of the body. Yet, in a globalized culture where self-expression and aesthetic appeal are highly valued, the line between modesty and modernity has become increasingly subjective. The tension between maintaining biblical standards and remaining socially relevant has created confusion among believers about what constitutes appropriate Christian dressing, especially for those in leadership positions who serve as role models for their followers (Ekong & Oladipo, 2020).

Furthermore, church leaders hold a powerful influence on the spiritual and moral direction of their congregations. Their personal choices in dressing and public image often serve as implicit lessons for church members, particularly the youth who tend to emulate their leaders. When leaders adopt highly fashionable or extravagant appearances, it may unintentionally promote materialism and vanity rather than modesty and humility. This could undermine the church’s moral authority and distort the values it seeks to impart to the wider society (Ajayi, 2019). Consequently, the dressing styles of church leaders may have deeper implications on the congregation’s understanding of holiness and Christian ethics than often recognized.

Another challenge lies in the lack of clear doctrinal or institutional guidelines on dressing within many Pentecostal denominations. Unlike older mainline churches that have established codes of conduct, Pentecostal churches often rely on personal conviction and the discretion of the leadership. This flexibility, while allowing for cultural adaptability, can also lead to inconsistencies and confusion in how modesty is interpreted and practiced. In some cases, the emphasis on outward success and prosperity may even encourage leaders to use fashion as a means of demonstrating divine favor, thereby linking spirituality with affluence and appearance (Adebayo, 2021).

Despite the growing attention to these issues, there remains a significant gap in scholarly research on how Pentecostal church leaders in Lagos interpret and express modesty in their dressing. Most existing studies have focused on general youth fashion or moral behavior, leaving the conduct of church leaders underexplored. As Lagos is a cosmopolitan center where cultural diversity and global fashion trends converge, it provides a relevant context for examining how Pentecostal leaders balance modesty with modern dressing. Hence, this study seeks to address this gap by investigating the relationship between church leaders, modesty, and modern dressing in selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos, with the aim of understanding its implications for Christian witness and moral leadership in the modern era.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the relationship between church leaders, modesty, and modern dressing in three selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos.
The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the biblical and theological understanding of modesty among Pentecostal church leaders.
2. Identify the factors influencing modern dressing styles among church leaders in Lagos.
3. Assess how church leaders’ dressing patterns influence congregational attitudes toward modesty.
4. Determine the extent to which church leaders maintain a balance between modesty and modern dressing.

1.4 Research Questions

The research questions are buttressed below:

1. How do Pentecostal church leaders in Lagos understand and define modesty in dressing?
2. What factors influence church leaders’ adoption of modern dressing styles?
3. How do church leaders’ dressing choices affect congregational perceptions of modesty?
4. In what ways do church leaders balance modern dressing with biblical modesty?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between church leaders’ dressing style and the promotion of modesty among Pentecostal congregations in Lagos.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between church leaders’ dressing style and the promotion of modesty among Pentecostal congregations in Lagos.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study holds significant importance for church leaders who are at the forefront of shaping the moral and spiritual direction of their congregations. In an age where fashion and self-expression are highly celebrated, many leaders find themselves navigating the thin line between modernity and modesty. The findings of this study will provide a reflective framework that enables church leaders to critically assess their dressing choices in light of biblical teachings and Christian ethics. By doing so, they can model a form of leadership that not only maintains spiritual integrity but also resonates positively with contemporary believers. This reflection will help restore a sense of balance between personal expression and godly responsibility within church leadership.

For congregants, the study will help to promote a more balanced and informed understanding of appearance that aligns with Christian values without necessarily rejecting cultural trends. Many believers, especially youths, look up to their pastors and church leaders as role models in faith and lifestyle. When there is clarity and consistency in the example set by leaders, congregants are more likely to develop a sound biblical perspective on dressing and modesty. Thus, this research will help to bridge the gap between traditional views of decency and modern expressions of style, encouraging Christians to embrace modest dressing that honors God while remaining socially relevant.

Theologically, this study contributes to ongoing discussions on Christian ethics and aesthetics. It challenges scholars and ministers to rethink how modesty is communicated and practiced in a rapidly changing cultural environment. By exploring the relationship between faith, appearance, and identity, the research offers insights into how theology can respond to contemporary issues of fashion and image. It underscores the importance of contextual theology—one that speaks to present realities without compromising biblical truth. Therefore, the study enriches the field of practical theology by linking doctrine with everyday Christian living.

In addition, this research will benefit seminary students and upcoming ministers who are being prepared for leadership in a modern world. Many theological institutions teach holiness and ethics in theory but often overlook practical issues such as dress and appearance in ministry. This study will serve as a valuable academic resource, helping future ministers to understand the sociocultural dynamics of dressing and its implications for ministry credibility. It can also inform curriculum development in theological education, ensuring that discussions of modesty and self-presentation are addressed within ministerial formation programs.

Researchers and scholars in religious studies, sociology, and cultural anthropology will also find this study valuable as it provides empirical data on how Pentecostal leaders in Lagos interpret and embody modesty. The findings will contribute to the growing body of literature on the intersection between religion, culture, and fashion in African contexts. It will open new avenues for comparative research between traditional and modern Christian practices, and between African and Western expressions of faith. Moreover, it will offer a localized understanding of how global cultural influences interact with religious ethics in one of Africa’s most cosmopolitan cities.

Finally, the study will have social and moral implications beyond the church environment. By promoting a culture of modesty and responsible self-presentation among spiritual leaders, the research indirectly fosters moral reformation and value orientation in the wider society. Since religious leaders occupy influential positions in Nigerian society, their example can shape societal attitudes toward decency, humility, and self-respect. In this way, the study not only contributes to the growth and credibility of Pentecostal churches in Lagos but also supports broader moral and cultural transformation within the community.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on three selected Pentecostal churches in Lagos State—specifically within the mainland and island areas—to capture diverse expressions of leadership and dressing styles. It will investigate both male and female church leaders, including pastors, assistant pastors, and ministers. The study concentrates on the influence of leadership dressing on congregational perceptions of modesty and spiritual identity.

1.8 Definition of Key Terms

• Church Leaders: Ordained or appointed individuals responsible for leading and guiding the congregation in spiritual matters.
• Modesty: The practice of maintaining decency and humility in appearance and behavior, consistent with biblical standards.

1.9 Organization of the Study

This research is structured into five chapters.
