CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Leadership occupies a central position in the life and mission of the Christian church. From biblical times to the contemporary era, effective leadership has been instrumental in guiding believers toward spiritual maturity, moral discipline, and active participation in church life. The New Testament presents church leadership as a divine calling characterized by service, integrity, accountability, and spiritual authority (Ephesians 4:11–13). Through leadership, churches provide direction, nurture faith, and foster environments where spiritual growth can thrive.

Spiritual growth refers to the continuous process through which believers deepen their relationship with God, develop Christ-like character, and grow in knowledge, obedience, and service. This growth is influenced by various factors, including teaching, discipleship, prayer, pastoral care, and organizational structure. Among these factors, church leadership plays a decisive role in shaping the spiritual experiences and outcomes of church members (Oginde, 2012).

In Nigeria, Christianity has experienced significant growth and diversification, with churches adopting varying leadership models and theological orientations. Two prominent Christian denominations that exemplify contrasting yet influential leadership styles are the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) and Living Faith Church Worldwide, popularly known as Winners’ Chapel. Christ Apostolic Church, one of Nigeria’s oldest indigenous Pentecostal churches, emphasizes holiness, prayer, prophetic ministry, and strong adherence to biblical teachings. Its leadership structure is traditionally rooted in spiritual authority, pastoral mentorship, and communal accountability (Ojo, 2006).

On the other hand, Winners’ Chapel represents a modern Pentecostal-charismatic movement with a leadership approach that emphasizes visionary leadership, structured administration, faith-based teachings, and empowerment of members for success in both spiritual and socio-economic life. Founded by Bishop David Oyedepo, Winners’ Chapel has experienced rapid numerical and institutional growth, attributed largely to its strong leadership philosophy and systematic discipleship programs (Ukah, 2008).

Despite their theological and organizational differences, both churches place significant emphasis on leadership as a catalyst for spiritual development. Through preaching, teaching, mentorship, and church programs, leaders influence members’ spiritual disciplines, commitment to Christian values, and participation in ministry. In Lagos and other urban centers, the influence of church leadership has become increasingly visible as churches expand in size, complexity, and social relevance.

However, the rapid growth of churches in Nigeria has also raised questions about the quality of spiritual growth among members. While many churches record impressive attendance figures, concerns have been expressed regarding superficial spirituality, dependency on church leaders, and limited personal spiritual discipline among members. These concerns highlight the need to critically examine how leadership styles and practices affect the spiritual growth of church members.

This study therefore examines church leadership and its influence on the spiritual growth of members in Nigerian churches, using Christ Apostolic Church and Winners’ Chapel as case studies. By comparing these two denominations, the study seeks to provide insights into how different leadership models contribute to or hinder spiritual growth within the Nigerian Christian context.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Church leadership is expected to nurture believers toward spiritual maturity, sound doctrine, and Christ-like living. However, despite the proliferation of churches and the prominence of church leaders in Nigeria, there is growing concern about the actual spiritual depth of many church members. Reports of moral lapses, materialism, and overdependence on church leaders suggest that spiritual growth may not be commensurate with the numerical expansion of churches.

In some cases, leadership styles have been criticized for promoting authoritarianism, personality cults, and excessive emphasis on material prosperity, which may overshadow core Christian virtues such as humility, self-denial, and service. Conversely, traditional leadership structures in older churches may sometimes struggle to adapt to contemporary challenges, leading to disengagement, especially among youths.

Despite the centrality of leadership in shaping spiritual outcomes, there is a paucity of empirical studies that specifically examine how church leadership influences the spiritual growth of members within different Nigerian denominations. In particular, comparative studies involving Christ Apostolic Church and Winners’ Chapel are limited, even though both churches exert significant influence on Nigerian Christianity.

The problem this study addresses is the limited scholarly understanding of the relationship between church leadership and the spiritual growth of members in Nigerian churches. This study seeks to investigate whether leadership practices in Christ Apostolic Church and Winners’ Chapel significantly influence members’ spiritual growth and how these influences manifest in their personal and communal Christian lives.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the influence of church leadership on the spiritual growth of members in Nigerian churches, with particular reference to Christ Apostolic Church and Winners’ Chapel.

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives of the study are to:

1. examine the leadership styles practiced in Christ Apostolic Church and Winners’ Chapel;

2. assess the level of spiritual growth among members of the selected churches;

3. determine the influence of church leadership on members’ spiritual growth;

4. identify challenges associated with church leadership and spiritual development.

1.5 Research Questions

1. What leadership styles are practiced in Christ Apostolic Church and Winners’ Chapel?

2. What is the level of spiritual growth among members of the selected churches?

3. How does church leadership influence the spiritual growth of members?

4. What challenges affect effective leadership and spiritual growth in Nigerian churches?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

H₀₁: There is no significant relationship between church leadership and the spiritual growth of members in Christ Apostolic Church and Winners’ Chapel.

1.7 Significance of the Study

This study will be beneficial to church leaders, pastors, and administrators by highlighting leadership practices that promote spiritual growth. It will also contribute to academic literature in theology and religious studies. Furthermore, the findings may guide churches in developing leadership training programs that foster genuine spiritual maturity among members.

1.8 Scope of the Study

The study is limited to Christ Apostolic Church and Winners’ Chapel in Nigeria. It focuses on leadership practices and their influence on the spiritual growth of church members within the selected denominations.

1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

• Church Leadership: The roles and responsibilities of pastors, elders, and church administrators in guiding the spiritual and organizational life of the church.

• Spiritual Growth: The process of maturing in faith, knowledge of God, and Christian character.

• Christ Apostolic Church (CAC): An indigenous Pentecostal church in Nigeria emphasizing holiness, prayer, and prophetic ministry.

• Winners’ Chapel: A Pentecostal-charismatic church emphasizing faith, leadership, and prosperity teachings.
