INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Early childhood education (ECE) is widely recognized as a foundational stage for cognitive, emotional, and social development in children, typically encompassing ages 0–8 years (UNESCO, 2015). Pre-primary and nursery education provide structured learning environments that not only develop literacy and numeracy skills but also promote social values, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal relationships (Epstein, 2007).

Social cohesion refers to the strength of relationships and the sense of solidarity among members of a community, fostering trust, cooperation, and active participation in communal life (Putnam, 2000). Strong social cohesion is critical for societal stability, crime reduction, and sustainable development. Research indicates that early socialization, particularly through formal and informal educational structures, plays a significant role in shaping cooperative behaviors, empathy, respect for rules, and civic-mindedness among children (Bandura, 1977; Bronfenbrenner, 1979).

In Nigeria, community perception of early childhood education can influence enrollment, teaching quality, and parental engagement, which in turn affects children’s development of social values and their ability to contribute positively to communal life (Okeke, 2018). Lagos Island Local Government Area, as a densely populated urban area with diverse socio-economic and cultural populations, presents a unique context where community attitudes toward ECE may significantly impact social cohesion. Positive community perception of ECE can encourage attendance, parental involvement, and support for programs that cultivate pro-social behaviors in children, whereas negative perceptions may limit participation, thereby affecting social development outcomes.

Studies have shown that communities that value early childhood education tend to produce children who exhibit higher levels of cooperation, tolerance, and conflict resolution skills, which strengthen overall social cohesion (Aina & Oladipo, 2020). Despite its importance, there is limited empirical research examining how community perceptions of ECE influence social cohesion in Nigerian urban contexts, particularly in Lagos Island LGA. Understanding this relationship is crucial for policymakers, educators, and community leaders aiming to foster harmonious, inclusive, and participatory communities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized benefits of early childhood education in fostering social and cognitive development, community perceptions of ECE in Lagos Island LGA vary widely. Some residents appreciate the role of pre-primary education in shaping responsible, cooperative, and socially-aware children, while others undervalue its importance due to cultural beliefs, cost considerations, or lack of awareness (Lagos State Ministry of Education, 2022).

These divergent perceptions may affect the enrollment of children in pre-nursery programs, parental involvement, and the allocation of community resources to ECE initiatives. Consequently, children may miss critical opportunities for socialization, leading to lower levels of pro-social behavior, weak interpersonal skills, and reduced capacity for cooperation in community settings. Over time, this may negatively affect social cohesion, manifesting in conflicts, lack of community trust, and limited civic engagement (Putnam, 2000).

There is a paucity of empirical research investigating the link between community perception of ECE and social cohesion in Lagos Island LGA. Without such evidence, policymakers and educators lack the necessary insights to design interventions that encourage community support for ECE programs and strengthen social cohesion among urban populations. This study seeks to fill this research gap by examining how community perceptions of early childhood education influence social cohesion in Lagos Island LGA.

1.3 Research Objectives

The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of community perception of early childhood education on social cohesion in Lagos Island Local Government Area. Specific objectives include:

1. To assess community perceptions of early childhood education in Lagos Island LGA.

2. To examine the level of social cohesion among residents of Lagos Island LGA.

3. To determine the influence of community perception of ECE on children’s pro-social behavior.

4. To identify factors that mediate the relationship between community perception of ECE and social cohesion.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What is the community perception of early childhood education in Lagos Island LGA?

2. What is the level of social cohesion among residents of Lagos Island LGA?

3. How does community perception of ECE influence children’s pro-social behavior?

4. What factors mediate the relationship between community perception of ECE and social cohesion?

1.5 Hypothesis

Ho: Community perception of early childhood education has no significant effect on social cohesion in Lagos Island Local Government Area.
Hi: Community perception of early childhood education has a significant effect on social cohesion in Lagos Island Local Government Area.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is significant in several ways:

• It provides empirical evidence on the role of community perception of ECE in fostering social cohesion, informing policymakers and educational planners in Lagos State.

• It helps educators and school administrators understand the importance of community engagement in early childhood programs.

• It informs community leaders and NGOs on strategies to enhance public awareness, encourage parental involvement, and promote harmonious community relations.

• It contributes to academic literature on early childhood education, social development, and urban community studies in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on residents and community stakeholders in Lagos Island Local Government Area. It examines community perceptions of early childhood education, the social behavior of children attending pre-nursery programs, and the resulting effects on social cohesion. The study does not extend to other levels of education such as primary, secondary, or tertiary education.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Early Childhood Education (ECE): Structured educational programs for children aged 0–8 years, aimed at developing cognitive, social, and emotional skills.

• Community Perception: The collective attitudes, beliefs, and opinions of community members regarding the value and importance of early childhood education.

• Social Cohesion: The strength of relationships, trust, cooperation, and sense of solidarity among members of a community.
