INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is widely regarded as a cornerstone of societal, economic, and human development. The quality of learning in schools is influenced not only by the competence of teachers and relevance of the curriculum but also by the physical and social environment of the school. School environment encompasses the condition of classrooms, availability of facilities, ventilation, lighting, sanitation, safety, and overall management practices (Earthman, 2002; UNESCO, 2017). A conducive school environment promotes students’ engagement, attention, and academic achievement, whereas a poorly maintained environment can hinder learning and negatively affect students’ outcomes.
Globally, studies have established a positive correlation between well-maintained, secure, and resourceful school environments and students’ academic performance. Schools with sufficient classroom space, good ventilation, adequate lighting, libraries, laboratories, and safe surroundings enable students to focus, participate actively in lessons, and achieve better learning outcomes (Barrett et al., 2015; Osher et al., 2014). Conversely, schools with inadequate infrastructure, poor lighting and ventilation, unsafe conditions, and overcrowded classrooms tend to have lower student motivation, higher absenteeism, and reduced academic performance.
In Nigeria, disparities between urban and peri-urban schools are often pronounced. Urban schools generally benefit from better infrastructure, access to teaching materials, electricity, and safer surroundings, whereas peri-urban schools may struggle with overcrowded classrooms, poor ventilation, inadequate lighting, limited resources, and poor sanitation (Federal Republic of Nigeria [FRN], 2013). These differences may contribute to variations in students’ learning outcomes, with urban students often performing better academically than their peri-urban counterparts.
Asokoro and Kuje, two districts in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), present an interesting context for a comparative study. Asokoro, largely urban, hosts schools with relatively better infrastructure, access to learning resources, and more robust safety measures. Kuje, a peri-urban area, has schools that often face challenges related to classroom overcrowding, inadequate facilities, limited resources, and environmental safety concerns. Despite these observed disparities, there is limited empirical research comparing school environments and learning outcomes between urban and peri-urban schools in these districts. Understanding these differences is essential for policymakers, educators, and school administrators aiming to improve educational quality and equity.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Learning outcomes in secondary schools are influenced by multiple factors, including the quality of the school environment. In Asokoro and Kuje, disparities exist in classroom facilities, infrastructure, ventilation, lighting, sanitation, and safety measures. Urban schools in Asokoro generally provide conducive learning conditions with adequate classrooms, lighting, ventilation, and access to resources, whereas peri-urban schools in Kuje often face challenges such as overcrowded classrooms, poor ventilation, limited lighting, insufficient instructional materials, and inadequate safety measures.
These disparities may contribute to differences in students’ attention, engagement, and academic performance. Students in peri-urban schools may experience reduced concentration, absenteeism, and poor comprehension due to substandard school environments. While government and education authorities recognize the importance of providing equitable school facilities, there is limited empirical evidence comparing how school environment affects learning outcomes between urban and peri-urban schools in Asokoro and Kuje. This knowledge gap hinders the development of targeted interventions to address inequalities and improve student performance in both settings.
Therefore, this study aims to investigate and compare the influence of school environment on learning outcomes in urban and peri-urban schools in Asokoro and Kuje, FCT, to provide insights for policy formulation, resource allocation, and educational planning.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine and compare the influence of school environment on learning outcomes in urban and peri-urban secondary schools in Asokoro and Kuje, FCT.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The specific objectives of the study are to:

assess the quality of school environments in urban and peri-urban secondary schools in Asokoro and Kuje;

1.6 Research Hypothesis
H₀: There is no significant difference in the influence of school environment on students’ learning outcomes between urban schools in Asokoro and peri-urban schools in Kuje, FCT.
1.7 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will benefit policymakers, school administrators, teachers, students, and researchers. Policymakers and the FCT Ministry of Education will gain empirical evidence to guide equitable allocation of resources and infrastructure planning. School administrators will understand how school environment affects learning outcomes and identify areas for improvement. Teachers will be informed about environmental factors influencing student engagement, allowing them to adapt instructional strategies. Students will benefit from improved learning conditions, while researchers can use the study as a reference for future investigations on educational disparities between urban and peri-urban settings.
1.8 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to selected secondary schools in Asokoro (urban) and Kuje (peri-urban) in the Federal Capital Territory. The study examines school environment as the independent variable and students’ learning outcomes as the dependent variable. Other factors affecting learning outcomes, such as teacher quality, socio-economic background, and curriculum, are acknowledged but not the primary focus of this study.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms

School Environment: Physical and social conditions of schools, including classroom facilities, ventilation, lighting, sanitation, safety, and availability of instructional resources.
