Project – Counselling Interventions and Reduction of Examination Malpractice Among Senior Secondary School Students – A Case Study of Public Secondary Schools in Awka

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education is widely recognized as a fundamental instrument for national development, human capital formation, and social transformation. Through education, individuals acquire knowledge, skills, values, and competencies necessary for personal growth and societal advancement. Secondary education occupies a strategic position in the Nigerian educational system because it serves as a bridge between primary and tertiary education. The effectiveness of secondary education largely depends on the integrity of its assessment and evaluation processes, particularly examinations, which are used to measure students’ academic achievement and readiness for further education (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2014).

Examinations constitute an essential component of the teaching-learning process because they provide objective evidence of students’ mastery of instructional content. According to Okeke and Denga (2021), examinations serve as a means of evaluating learning outcomes and ensuring accountability within the educational system. However, the credibility of examinations is threatened when students engage in examination malpractice. Examination malpractice refers to any deliberate act of wrongdoing before, during, or after an examination aimed at obtaining an unfair advantage over other candidates (Nwadiani, 2020).

Examination malpractice has become one of the most persistent challenges facing the Nigerian educational system. The problem has attracted the attention of educational stakeholders due to its adverse effects on academic standards and national development. Examination malpractice manifests in various forms, including cheating, impersonation, collusion, leakage of examination questions, smuggling of unauthorized materials into examination halls, electronic cheating, and bribery of examination officials (Oko & Adie, 2022). The increasing sophistication of these practices has made the problem more difficult to control despite numerous preventive measures implemented by educational authorities.

Several studies have identified factors responsible for the prevalence of examination malpractice among secondary school students. Such factors include poor study habits, inadequate preparation for examinations, fear of failure, low self-esteem, peer pressure, parental expectations, poor supervision during examinations, and societal emphasis on certificates rather than competence (Eremie & Jackson, 2021; Nnachi & Nwite, 2023). Similarly, test anxiety and lack of confidence in academic ability have been found to influence students’ willingness to engage in dishonest examination practices (Aremu & Oluwole, 2021).

The consequences of examination malpractice are enormous and far-reaching. It undermines the validity and reliability of examinations, encourages laziness among students, promotes corruption, and weakens public confidence in educational certificates. According to Omonijo, Uche, Nwadialor and Rotimi (2020), examination malpractice contributes significantly to the production of graduates who possess certificates without corresponding knowledge and skills. Such a situation poses serious threats to workforce productivity, national development, and the overall quality of education.

In response to the growing incidence of examination malpractice, educational authorities have adopted various punitive measures, including cancellation of examination results, suspension, expulsion, and prosecution of offenders. Despite these efforts, examination malpractice remains prevalent in many Nigerian secondary schools (West African Examinations Council [WAEC], 2024). The persistence of the problem suggests that punitive measures alone may not adequately address the psychological and social factors that predispose students to engage in malpractice.

Consequently, increasing attention has been directed toward counselling interventions as a preventive and corrective strategy for reducing examination malpractice among students. Counselling interventions involve professional guidance services designed to assist students in understanding themselves, modifying undesirable behaviours, improving decision-making skills, and developing positive attitudes toward academic work (Makinde, 2020). School counselling programmes provide opportunities for students to address personal, emotional, social, and academic challenges that may contribute to examination malpractice.

Guidance counsellors employ various intervention strategies such as individual counselling, group counselling, cognitive-behavioural counselling, value re-orientation programmes, study skills training, academic mentoring, and examination anxiety management techniques. These interventions aim to help students develop self-confidence, improve study habits, strengthen moral values, and cultivate positive attitudes toward academic integrity (Egbo, 2021). Through these approaches, students are encouraged to rely on hard work and ethical conduct rather than dishonest means of achieving academic success.

Empirical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of counselling interventions in reducing examination malpractice tendencies among secondary school students. For instance, Nwosu and Obidoa (2022) found that group counselling significantly reduced students’ positive disposition toward examination malpractice in secondary schools in South-East Nigeria. Similarly, Eze and Okafor (2023) reported that value re-orientation and behavioural counselling programmes improved students’ attitudes toward academic honesty and reduced their likelihood of engaging in examination misconduct.

In Anambra State, particularly in Awka, concerns continue to be raised regarding the involvement of secondary school students in examination malpractice despite the presence of guidance and counselling services in schools. Reports from school administrators and examination officials suggest that examination-related misconduct remains a challenge in some public secondary schools. This situation has generated interest in determining whether counselling interventions are effectively contributing to the reduction of examination malpractice among senior secondary school students in the area.

It is against this background that this study investigates counselling interventions and reduction of examination malpractice among senior secondary school students in public secondary schools in Awka.
