INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Agriculture remains a critical sector in the Nigerian economy, contributing significantly to food production, employment generation, income creation, and rural development. Despite the increasing importance of other sectors, agriculture continues to serve as a major source of livelihood for millions of Nigerians. Within the agricultural sector, livestock production occupies a strategic position due to its contribution to food security, nutritional improvement, and economic growth. Poultry production, in particular, has emerged as one of the most dynamic and rapidly expanding segments of the livestock industry because of its ability to generate income within a relatively short production cycle and its capacity to provide high-quality animal protein to the population (Food and Agriculture Organization [FAO], 2023).
The poultry industry contributes substantially to Nigeria’s agricultural gross domestic product and serves as an important source of employment for farmers, marketers, processors, veterinarians, feed manufacturers, and transport operators. Poultry products, especially broiler meat and eggs, constitute essential components of household diets due to their affordability and nutritional value. The growing population, urbanization, and rising demand for animal protein have contributed to increased investments in poultry production across the country (FAO, 2023).
Among the various poultry enterprises, broiler production has gained considerable prominence because of its high turnover rate, relatively low capital requirement compared to other livestock enterprises, and increasing market demand. Broiler chickens are specifically raised for meat production and can attain market weight within six to eight weeks under proper management conditions. Consequently, broiler farming has become an attractive business venture for both small-scale and commercial farmers in Nigeria.
However, the sustainability and profitability of broiler production depend largely on the efficiency with which available resources are utilized. Rising production costs, disease outbreaks, feed shortages, climate variability, and market uncertainties have continued to challenge poultry farmers. Technology adoption contributes significantly to sustainability by promoting efficient resource utilization and reducing production inefficiencies. Improved feeding technologies reduce feed wastage, automated water systems enhance water conservation, and environmentally controlled housing systems minimize environmental stress on birds. Similarly, digital technologies facilitate better monitoring of flock health, reducing unnecessary medication use and improving animal welfare outcomes.
Despite the numerous benefits associated with technology adoption, adoption rates among broiler farmers in Nigeria remain relatively low. Many poultry producers continue to rely on traditional production methods characterized by low productivity, high mortality rates, and inefficient resource utilization. The slow adoption of modern technologies has limited the ability of many farmers to achieve optimal production performance and long-term sustainability.
Several factors influence farmers’ decisions to adopt agricultural technologies. These factors include age, educational level, farming experience, farm size, access to extension services, access to credit, membership in cooperative societies, availability of information, and perceived profitability of the technology. Socio-economic characteristics often determine the extent to which farmers can acquire and effectively utilize modern technologies (Rogers, 2003).
Education plays a particularly important role in technology adoption because educated farmers are generally more capable of understanding, evaluating, and implementing new technologies. Similarly, access to extension services enhances awareness of technological innovations and provides technical support necessary for successful adoption. Large-scale farmers often possess greater financial capacity and are more willing to invest in advanced technologies because they can spread costs across larger production units. In contrast, smallholder farmers may perceive technological investments as risky due to limited resources and uncertainty regarding returns.
The Nigerian poultry industry is currently undergoing significant transformation driven by increasing demand for poultry products, technological advancements, and changing market dynamics. However, the sector continues to face challenges relating to low productivity, rising production costs, disease outbreaks, poor infrastructure, and limited access to modern technologies. Addressing these challenges requires a better understanding of the factors influencing technology adoption and its impact on farm performance.
Although previous studies have examined poultry production efficiency and technology adoption in Nigeria, there remains limited empirical evidence regarding the determinants of technology adoption and its specific effects on technical efficiency and sustainability among broiler production enterprises. Existing studies have largely focused on profitability and productivity without adequately investigating the relationship between technological adoption, efficiency improvement, and long-term sustainability outcomes.
Given the strategic importance of broiler production to food security, employment generation, and economic development, there is a need for comprehensive research examining how technology adoption influences farm efficiency and sustainability. Understanding these relationships will provide valuable insights for policymakers, extension agencies, researchers, and poultry producers seeking to promote sustainable agricultural development.
It is against this background that this study seeks to investigate the determinants of technology adoption and its impact on the technical efficiency and sustainability of broiler production enterprises in Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The poultry industry remains one of the most important livestock subsectors in Nigeria, contributing significantly to food security, employment creation, and income generation. Broiler production, in particular, plays a vital role in meeting the increasing demand for animal protein arising from rapid population growth and urbanization. Despite its importance, broiler production in Nigeria continues to face numerous challenges that limit productivity, profitability, and long-term sustainability.
One of the major challenges confronting broiler producers is low technical efficiency. Many poultry farmers are unable to achieve optimal output levels from available production inputs due to inefficient resource utilization, poor management practices, and limited adoption of modern technologies. Consequently, production costs remain high while output levels remain below potential capacity.
The increasing cost of feed, disease outbreaks, poor housing conditions, inadequate biosecurity measures, and limited access to quality veterinary services have further reduced the efficiency of broiler production enterprises. These challenges often result in low growth rates, high mortality rates, poor feed conversion efficiency, and reduced profitability among poultry farmers.
Technological innovations capable of addressing these challenges are increasingly available within the poultry industry. These include automated feeding systems, improved broiler breeds, climate-controlled housing facilities, digital monitoring technologies, biosecurity innovations, and precision poultry management systems. However, the adoption of these technologies among broiler producers remains uneven and relatively low.
The low rate of technology adoption raises concerns regarding the competitiveness and sustainability of broiler production enterprises in Nigeria. Farmers who fail to adopt modern technologies may experience declining productivity and increasing production costs, thereby threatening the long-term viability of their businesses.
Several socio-economic, institutional, and farm-specific factors are believed to influence technology adoption decisions among poultry farmers. However, there is inadequate empirical information regarding the relative importance of these factors and how they affect technology adoption among broiler producers in Nigeria.
Furthermore, while technological adoption is generally expected to improve farm performance, limited evidence exists regarding its actual impact on technical efficiency and sustainability among broiler production enterprises. Consequently, policymakers and development agencies lack adequate information for designing effective interventions aimed at promoting technological advancement within the poultry sector.
The lack of comprehensive empirical evidence on the determinants of technology adoption and its effects on efficiency and sustainability represents a significant knowledge gap. Therefore, this study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the determinants of technology adoption and evaluating its impact on the technical efficiency and sustainability of broiler production enterprises in Nigeria.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The broad objective of the study is to examine the determinants of technology adoption and its impact on the technical efficiency and sustainability of broiler production enterprises in Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:
- examine the socio-economic characteristics of broiler producers in Nigeria;
- identify the technologies adopted by broiler production enterprises;
- determine the factors influencing technology adoption among broiler producers;
- assess the level of technical efficiency among broiler production enterprises;

1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: Technology adoption has no significant effect on the technical efficiency and sustainability of broiler production enterprises in Nigeria.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study will provide valuable information to poultry farmers, policymakers, agricultural extension agencies, researchers, development organizations, and financial institutions. The findings will assist farmers in understanding the benefits of adopting modern production technologies and improving farm performance.
The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for policymakers involved in designing agricultural development programmes and technology dissemination strategies. Extension agents will benefit from a better understanding of the factors influencing technology adoption and the challenges faced by broiler farmers.
Furthermore, the findings will contribute to existing literature on agricultural technology adoption, technical efficiency, and sustainability in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the determinants of technology adoption and its impact on the technical efficiency and sustainability of broiler production enterprises in Nigeria. The study covers broiler farmers operating within selected poultry-producing states in Nigeria and examines technology adoption, efficiency performance, sustainability indicators, and adoption constraints.
