Project – Digital Evangelism and Youth Spiritual Growth in Pentecostal Churches: A Study of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Lagos Province 20
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Religion has historically relied on communication as a fundamental means of transmitting beliefs, values, doctrines, and spiritual practices from one generation to another. Christianity, from its earliest development, has been characterised by various forms of communication, including oral proclamation, written scriptures, missionary activities, preaching, and later the use of print media, radio, television, and digital technologies. The Great Commission of Jesus Christ, which instructs believers to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19–20), has continued to shape Christian evangelistic efforts across different historical periods. As societies develop new communication technologies, Christian communities have increasingly explored innovative methods of spreading the gospel and engaging individuals, particularly younger generations.
The emergence of digital technologies has significantly transformed contemporary religious communication and practice. The rapid growth of the internet, smartphones, social media platforms, video-sharing applications, podcasts, and online communities has created new opportunities for religious organisations to communicate beyond traditional physical spaces. Digital evangelism has therefore become an important feature of modern Christian ministry, enabling churches to reach wider audiences, provide spiritual resources, facilitate online worship experiences, and maintain continuous interaction with members and non-members (Campbell, 2010; Campbell & Tsuria, 2021).
Digital evangelism refers to the use of digital technologies and online platforms for communicating religious messages, sharing biblical teachings, conducting virtual outreach, providing spiritual guidance, and facilitating religious engagement. Unlike traditional evangelism, which often depends on physical gatherings, personal encounters, and organised missionary activities, digital evangelism enables churches to engage individuals regardless of geographical location. Through platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, podcasts, church websites, and mobile applications, religious organisations can distribute sermons, devotionals, worship programmes, prayer sessions, and theological teachings to diverse audiences.
The increasing use of digital media among young people has made digital evangelism particularly relevant for youth ministry. Young people represent one of the most digitally connected generations, with social media and online communication forming important aspects of their daily lives. According to Campbell and Tsuria (2021), digital technologies have become deeply integrated into contemporary religious experiences, influencing how individuals encounter, interpret, and participate in religious practices. Consequently, churches seeking to engage young people must understand how digital platforms influence spiritual formation, religious identity, and participation in faith communities.
Youth spiritual growth refers to the process through which young believers develop deeper knowledge of God, strengthen their faith, cultivate Christian values, participate in spiritual disciplines, and demonstrate personal transformation through their relationship with Christ. Spiritual growth involves activities such as prayer, Bible study, worship, discipleship, fellowship, service, and moral development. In Pentecostal Christianity, spiritual growth is often associated with personal encounters with God, the work of the Holy Spirit, biblical understanding, active participation in church activities, and commitment to Christian living (Anderson, 2014).
Pentecostal churches have historically demonstrated a strong commitment to evangelism, missions, discipleship, and the use of available communication technologies to spread the Christian message. From the early twentieth century, Pentecostal movements expanded globally through dynamic preaching, testimonies, healing ministries, music, media communication, and missionary activities. The adaptability of Pentecostal Christianity has enabled many Pentecostal churches to embrace technological innovations as tools for evangelism and ministry expansion (Anderson, 2014; Asamoah-Gyadu, 2013).
In Africa, particularly Nigeria, Pentecostal Christianity has experienced significant growth due to effective evangelistic strategies, charismatic leadership, media engagement, and extensive use of communication technologies. Nigerian Pentecostal churches have consistently adopted emerging media platforms to reach wider audiences and strengthen their ministry activities. Radio programmes, television broadcasts, satellite channels, online streaming, and social media platforms have become important instruments for evangelism and discipleship. Asamoah-Gyadu (2013) argues that African Pentecostal movements have demonstrated considerable ability to integrate popular culture and communication technologies into religious expression and mission.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) represents one of the largest Pentecostal denominations in Nigeria and one of the fastest-growing Pentecostal movements globally. Established in Nigeria in 1952 under the leadership of Pa Josiah Akindayomi and later expanded significantly under Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the RCCG has developed extensive evangelistic programmes, youth ministries, media platforms, and global outreach initiatives. The church’s commitment to evangelism and discipleship has encouraged the adoption of modern communication tools to reach individuals both within and outside Nigeria.
The RCCG has increasingly incorporated digital platforms into its ministry activities through online sermons, virtual prayer meetings, digital devotionals, social media engagement, online counselling, and livestreamed worship services. These digital initiatives became particularly significant during the COVID-19 pandemic when restrictions on physical gatherings forced many churches worldwide to adopt online alternatives for worship and spiritual engagement (Campbell & Tsuria, 2021). The experience demonstrated the potential of digital platforms to maintain religious connection and support spiritual activities beyond physical church buildings.
The use of digital evangelism within Pentecostal churches has created opportunities for reaching young people who may spend considerable time within digital environments. Youths who may not always attend physical church programmes can access sermons, worship materials, biblical teachings, and spiritual encouragement through online platforms. Digital evangelism may therefore complement traditional youth ministry by providing additional opportunities for spiritual learning, discipleship, and religious participation.
However, the relationship between digital evangelism and youth spiritual growth remains complex. While digital platforms provide opportunities for increased access to religious content, online engagement does not automatically translate into deeper spiritual transformation. Spiritual growth requires more than exposure to religious information; it involves commitment, personal reflection, discipleship relationships, participation in Christian community, and practical application of biblical teachings. Campbell (2010) notes that digital religious engagement may reshape religious experiences and authority structures but must be examined carefully within specific faith contexts.
One major advantage of digital evangelism is its ability to enhance accessibility to spiritual resources. Young people can access sermons, Bible studies, prayer sessions, and Christian teachings at any time and from any location. This flexibility may support personal devotion and encourage continuous engagement with religious content beyond scheduled church activities. Digital platforms also enable churches to communicate spiritual messages rapidly and respond to contemporary issues affecting young people.
Digital evangelism may also strengthen youth participation and interaction within church communities. Social media platforms provide opportunities for young believers to share testimonies, participate in discussions, request prayers, and engage with church leaders. Such interactions may create a sense of belonging and encourage greater involvement in church activities. Cheong (2016) argues that digital communication technologies can facilitate new forms of religious participation and community-building.
Despite these benefits, concerns have been raised regarding the possible limitations of digital religious engagement. Excessive dependence on online religious content may reduce physical participation in church activities and weaken interpersonal relationships within faith communities. Furthermore, the internet contains diverse religious and non-religious information, some of which may conflict with established Christian teachings. Young people may therefore require guidance in critically engaging with digital religious content.
Another concern relates to the quality and effectiveness of digital evangelism in promoting genuine spiritual growth. The availability of online sermons and religious materials does not necessarily guarantee discipleship, character transformation, or spiritual maturity. Some young people may consume religious content passively without developing deeper commitment to Christian practices. Therefore, examining the relationship between digital evangelism and measurable aspects of youth spiritual growth remains important.
The Nigerian Pentecostal context provides a significant environment for studying this relationship because Pentecostal churches place strong emphasis on evangelism, discipleship, spiritual empowerment, and youth development. The RCCG, with its extensive youth programmes and global digital presence, provides an appropriate case study for examining how digital evangelism influences the spiritual lives of young believers.
Lagos Province 20 of the Redeemed Christian Church of God represents a relevant context for this study because Lagos remains one of Nigeria’s most technologically connected urban environments. The widespread use of smartphones, internet services, and social media among youths in Lagos creates opportunities for digital evangelism to influence religious learning and participation. However, despite the increasing adoption of digital platforms by churches, there remains a need to examine whether such platforms effectively contribute to youth spiritual development.
Previous studies have explored digital religion, online Christian communities, and the relationship between technology and religious practice. However, many studies have focused on Western contexts, while fewer empirical studies have examined digital evangelism and youth spiritual growth within Nigerian Pentecostal churches. Additionally, limited attention has been given to specific denominational contexts such as the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Therefore, this study seeks to examine the relationship between digital evangelism and youth spiritual growth in Pentecostal churches, using The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Lagos Province 20 as a case study. The study aims to determine how digital evangelistic activities influence young believers’ spiritual practices, biblical understanding, church participation, and overall spiritual development. The findings are expected to contribute to discussions on contemporary Christian ministry, digital religion, youth discipleship, and the effective use of technology in Pentecostal evangelism.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The rapid advancement of digital technologies has transformed the way individuals communicate, access information, and participate in social and religious activities. Within the Christian community, digital platforms have created new possibilities for evangelism, discipleship, worship, and spiritual interaction. Pentecostal churches, known for their emphasis on evangelism, personal conversion, spiritual empowerment, and active engagement with contemporary culture, have increasingly adopted digital media platforms to communicate the gospel message and reach wider audiences (Campbell & Tsuria, 2021; Anderson, 2014). Despite these developments, questions remain regarding the actual influence of digital evangelism on the spiritual growth of young believers.
Youth spiritual development remains a major concern for Pentecostal churches because young people represent the future leadership and continuity of the Christian faith community. Pentecostal churches invest significant resources in youth ministries, discipleship programmes, Bible studies, prayer meetings, and evangelistic activities aimed at nurturing young believers. However, changing social patterns, technological dependence, secular influences, and evolving communication habits have created new challenges for traditional approaches to youth ministry (Hutchings, 2017).
Although digital evangelism provides opportunities for churches to reach young people through platforms they frequently use, there is uncertainty regarding whether online religious engagement produces meaningful spiritual transformation. Access to online sermons, worship sessions, devotionals, and biblical teachings may increase exposure to Christian messages, but spiritual growth requires deeper processes such as discipleship, personal commitment, practical application of biblical principles, participation in Christian fellowship, and character development. Therefore, the effectiveness of digital evangelism as a tool for promoting genuine spiritual maturity requires further investigation.
One major problem confronting Pentecostal churches is the possibility of a gap between digital participation and actual spiritual growth. Many young people engage with religious content online by watching sermons, following Christian influencers, or participating in virtual prayer sessions; however, it remains unclear whether such activities significantly influence their prayer life, Bible study habits, moral decisions, commitment to church activities, and personal relationship with God. Digital engagement may provide information and inspiration, but the extent to which it contributes to long-term spiritual transformation remains an important research concern.
Furthermore, the increasing dependence of youths on digital platforms has created both opportunities and challenges for Christian ministry. While social media and online platforms enable churches to communicate effectively with younger generations, these same platforms expose young people to competing ideologies, misinformation, secular values, and alternative religious perspectives. Campbell (2010) argues that digital religious environments influence how individuals understand religious authority, community, and spiritual identity. Therefore, churches must evaluate whether their digital evangelism strategies are effectively addressing the spiritual needs and challenges of contemporary youths.
Another problem is that many Pentecostal churches have adopted digital evangelism primarily as a means of outreach and communication without sufficient assessment of its impact on discipleship outcomes. The availability of livestreamed services, online sermons, and social media content does not necessarily indicate successful spiritual formation. Without empirical evaluation, churches may invest heavily in digital platforms without clear understanding of their effectiveness in strengthening young believers’ faith, spiritual discipline, and commitment.
In Nigeria, Pentecostal churches have become major users of digital media for evangelistic activities. Churches such as the Redeemed Christian Church of God have developed extensive online ministries, including livestream services, digital devotionals, social media platforms, and online prayer programmes. These initiatives have expanded significantly due to technological development and the experience of the COVID-19 pandemic, when many churches relied on digital platforms to maintain worship and fellowship activities (Campbell & Tsuria, 2021). However, despite the widespread adoption of these digital methods, limited empirical evidence exists regarding their influence on youth spiritual growth within Nigerian Pentecostal contexts.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Lagos Province 20, provides a significant context for examining this issue because of its active youth population and engagement with digital ministry platforms. Young members within the province are exposed to various forms of digital evangelism, including online sermons, social media teachings, virtual prayer meetings, Christian videos, and digital Bible study resources. However, the extent to which these digital initiatives influence their spiritual development remains insufficiently examined.
Existing studies on digital religion have largely focused on Western societies where technological infrastructure, religious culture, and patterns of online engagement may differ significantly from the Nigerian context (Campbell & Tsuria, 2021; Hutchings, 2017). Similarly, studies on Pentecostal media practices in Africa have examined the relationship between Christianity and popular culture but have provided limited empirical attention to how digital evangelism specifically affects youth spiritual growth within local church settings (Asamoah-Gyadu, 2013).
Another identified gap concerns measurement. Previous discussions on digital evangelism often focus on the benefits of online religious communication, such as wider outreach, accessibility, and convenience. However, fewer studies have examined measurable indicators of spiritual growth, including increased biblical knowledge, prayer commitment, participation in church activities, personal devotion, Christian values, and discipleship involvement. This creates a need for research that moves beyond discussing digital evangelism as a communication tool to examining its actual influence on youth spiritual outcomes.
Additionally, some church leaders and scholars express concerns that excessive reliance on digital platforms may weaken physical fellowship and interpersonal relationships that are central to Pentecostal spirituality. Pentecostal Christianity traditionally emphasises communal worship, spiritual mentoring, collective prayer, and personal relationships within the church community (Anderson, 2014). Therefore, it is necessary to determine whether digital evangelism complements traditional ministry approaches or creates challenges for authentic spiritual formation among young believers.
The absence of sufficient empirical evidence on this subject creates a practical problem for Pentecostal churches seeking to develop effective youth ministry strategies. Without understanding the relationship between digital evangelism and spiritual growth, church leaders may find it difficult to determine how digital resources should be integrated with conventional discipleship methods. Evidence-based understanding is required to ensure that digital evangelism serves not only as an outreach mechanism but also as an effective instrument for spiritual development.
Consequently, this study seeks to address this gap by examining Digital Evangelism and Youth Spiritual Growth in Pentecostal Churches: A Study of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Lagos Province 20. The study will investigate whether digital evangelistic activities significantly influence youths’ spiritual growth, including their biblical understanding, prayer life, church participation, discipleship commitment, and Christian lifestyle. The findings will provide useful insights for Pentecostal church leaders, youth ministry coordinators, theologians, and researchers interested in the intersection between technology, evangelism, and contemporary Christian spirituality.
