INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The contemporary workplace is increasingly characterised by rapid technological development, digital connectivity and the extensive use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Organisations across different sectors rely on computers, smartphones, enterprise software, cloud platforms, video-conferencing applications, instant messaging, electronic mail, digital collaboration systems and other technologies to perform routine and strategic activities. While these technologies have improved communication, flexibility and access to information, their extensive and continuous use has also created new challenges for employees. One emerging concern is digital fatigue, which refers broadly to the physical, cognitive and emotional exhaustion associated with prolonged or intensive interaction with digital technologies.
Digital technology has become an essential component of modern organisational activity. Employees are increasingly expected to communicate, collaborate, access information and complete tasks through digital platforms. The transition toward technology-driven workplaces has accelerated because organisations seek to improve efficiency, reduce operating costs, support remote and hybrid work and respond quickly to changing customer expectations. However, the benefits of digitalisation may be accompanied by increased workloads, information overload, constant connectivity and pressure to respond rapidly to digital communications.
The widespread use of digital communication technologies has fundamentally changed the boundaries between work and non-work activities. Employees may receive work emails, instant messages, notifications and meeting invitations throughout the working day and, in some circumstances, outside conventional working hours. This persistent connectivity can make employees feel that they must remain available even when they are not actively performing work tasks. Barber and Santuzzi (2015) describe this phenomenon in terms of workplace telepressure, referring to the psychological pressure employees experience to respond quickly to work-related messages.
Digital fatigue is closely related to the broader concept of technostress. Brod (1984) originally described technostress as a modern disease of adaptation caused by an inability to cope with new computer technologies in a healthy manner. Although technology has evolved substantially since the concept was introduced, the underlying concern remains relevant: employees may experience stress when technological demands exceed their ability or resources to cope with them.
Tarafdar et al. (2007) developed the concept of technostress creators and identified factors such as techno-overload, techno-invasion, techno-complexity, techno-insecurity and techno-uncertainty. Techno-overload occurs when employees are required to work faster and handle larger amounts of information because of technology. Techno-invasion occurs when technology creates a sense that employees must remain constantly connected to work. These dimensions are particularly relevant to contemporary technology-driven workplaces.
Digital fatigue may therefore occur when employees are exposed to excessive digital demands for extended periods. Such demands may include prolonged screen time, frequent virtual meetings, continuous email communication, multiple workplace applications, constant notifications, rapid information processing and pressure to remain digitally available. Although digital tools can facilitate work, excessive use may increase cognitive demands and reduce opportunities for psychological recovery.
The growth of virtual meetings is an important component of this development. Video-conferencing platforms have become widely used for meetings, training, collaboration and interaction among geographically dispersed employees. Research by Wiederhold (2020) highlighted the psychological and physical consequences associated with prolonged videoconferencing, while Bailenson (2021) examined why videoconferencing can create fatigue and proposed the concept of “Zoom fatigue.” He identified mechanisms including excessive eye contact, reduced mobility, increased self-awareness and cognitive load associated with video communication.
The relevance of digital fatigue extends beyond video meetings. Employees may simultaneously use multiple digital platforms while performing their jobs. For example, an employee may participate in a virtual meeting while responding to emails, monitoring instant messages and accessing information through an enterprise system. Such multitasking can increase cognitive demands and potentially reduce attention and work effectiveness.
The relationship between digital technology and employee productivity is therefore complex. Technology can improve productivity by automating routine tasks, facilitating communication and providing rapid access to information. At the same time, excessive digital demands may reduce productivity through distraction, exhaustion, information overload and reduced concentration. Consequently, the question is not simply whether organisations use technology but whether technology is used in ways that support sustainable employee performance.
Employee productivity refers to the quantity and quality of work produced by employees within a given period relative to the resources and effort involved. Productivity may be reflected in task completion, work quality, efficiency, timeliness and achievement of organisational objectives. In knowledge-intensive organisations, productivity also depends on employees’ ability to concentrate, solve problems, communicate effectively and make appropriate decisions.
Digital fatigue may affect productivity through several mechanisms. First, prolonged digital engagement can create cognitive fatigue. Employees who continuously process digital information may experience difficulty maintaining attention and concentration. Second, constant notifications can interrupt task performance. Third, excessive virtual meetings can reduce time available for focused work. Fourth, information overload can make it difficult for employees to identify and prioritise relevant information. Finally, continuous connectivity may interfere with psychological recovery from work.
Information overload is particularly important in digital workplaces. Eppler and Mengis (2004) describe information overload as a situation in which the volume of information exceeds an individual’s processing capacity. Digital technologies can substantially increase the speed and volume of information employees receive. Although access to information can support decision-making, excessive information may increase cognitive burden and make employees less efficient.
The problem of digital fatigue also became more prominent during the COVID-19 pandemic. (2020) found that remote work during the pandemic involved new patterns of collaboration and coordination, while Wang et al. (2021) identified challenges associated with remote working, including work-home interference, ineffective communication and loneliness.
Although the pandemic accelerated digital fatigue research, the phenomenon is not limited to emergency remote work. Technology-driven workplaces increasingly operate through permanent digital systems. Employees may spend substantial portions of their working day interacting with screens and digital communication tools even when working from physical offices. Therefore, digital fatigue remains relevant as organisations continue to adopt digital transformation strategies.
Another important dimension is workplace telepressure. Barber and Santuzzi (2015) found that employees who experience high pressure to respond to work-related messages may experience difficulties disengaging from work. This can contribute to exhaustion and poorer recovery. In technology-driven organisations, expectations of rapid responses can therefore transform digital connectivity from a productivity tool into a potential source of pressure.
Digital fatigue can also affect work-life boundaries. When employees remain connected to work through mobile devices, the physical separation between work and personal life becomes less meaningful. Derks, van Duin, Tims, and Bakker (2015) found that smartphone use for work purposes can influence work-home interference, particularly where employees experience difficulty psychologically detaching from work.
Psychological detachment is important for employee recovery. Sonnentag and Fritz (2007) identify psychological detachment from work as one of the key recovery experiences that help employees restore resources after work. If employees continue responding to work messages and thinking about work tasks through digital devices outside working hours, opportunities for psychological detachment may be reduced.
The consequences of inadequate recovery can affect employee performance. Thus, digital fatigue may not only affect employee well-being but may also influence organisational productivity.
The issue is particularly relevant to organisations operating within the technology sector. Technology-driven companies depend heavily on digital systems, software applications, electronic communication and continuous innovation. Employees in such organisations may be exposed to more intensive digital demands than employees in less technology-dependent environments. They may be expected to monitor multiple systems, communicate across digital channels, attend virtual meetings, solve technology-related problems and respond rapidly to customers or colleagues.
Interswitch Group provides an appropriate context for examining this phenomenon. Interswitch is a major African technology and payments company with significant operations in Nigeria. Its business activities are closely associated with digital payments, financial technology and electronic transaction infrastructure. Lagos is also an important setting for the study because it is Nigeria’s leading commercial and technology hub. The city hosts numerous financial technology companies, technology firms, banks, telecommunications companies and digital businesses. Employees in Lagos are increasingly working within highly connected environments where digital technologies form an important part of organisational processes.
The growth of Nigeria’s digital economy has created substantial opportunities for productivity and innovation. Digital technologies have enabled organisations to automate processes, reach customers more efficiently and operate across geographical boundaries. However, the same technologies can increase the pace and intensity of work. Employees may be required to process more information, respond more quickly and remain available through multiple communication channels.
This creates an important organisational challenge: how can technology-driven organisations obtain the productivity benefits of digitalisation without creating excessive digital demands that undermine employee effectiveness?
Digital fatigue is therefore not simply an individual problem. It can become an organisational issue when the design and use of technology create persistent demands on employees. Organisational practices concerning meeting schedules, communication expectations, notification management, workload distribution and digital availability can either reduce or increase employees’ exposure to digital fatigue.
Leadership also plays an important role. Managers determine, directly or indirectly, how digital communication technologies are used within teams. Managers who expect immediate responses to every message may increase telepressure, whereas managers who establish reasonable communication expectations may reduce unnecessary digital interruptions.

If employees experience excessive digital exhaustion, the organisation may face reduced concentration, slower task completion, increased errors, poorer creativity, disengagement and other productivity challenges. Conversely, appropriate technology-management practices may enable organisations to benefit from digitalisation while minimising fatigue.
Despite increasing international research on technostress, digital fatigue and virtual-work challenges, there remains a need for context-specific research within Nigerian technology companies. Much of the literature has emerged from European, North American and other international contexts. Nigerian workplaces operate within distinctive technological, cultural, economic and organisational conditions, making empirical investigation necessary.
The present study therefore focuses on Digital Fatigue and Employee Productivity in Technology-Driven Workplaces: A Study of Employees of Interswitch Group, Lagos. The study seeks to determine whether digital fatigue is significantly related to employee productivity and to provide evidence that can assist technology-driven organisations in managing digital work demands more effectively.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The rapid adoption of digital technologies has transformed the way employees communicate, collaborate and perform their duties. Technology has made it possible for employees to access information instantly, communicate across geographical boundaries, automate routine tasks and work flexibly. However, the increasing intensity of digital interaction has created concerns about employees’ physical, cognitive and psychological capacity to cope with continuous technology use.
One major problem is the growing amount of time employees spend interacting with digital devices. Employees in technology-driven organisations may spend several hours each day looking at computer screens, attending virtual meetings, responding to emails, using messaging applications and accessing enterprise platforms. Continuous exposure to such technologies can create fatigue, particularly when employees have limited opportunities for breaks or recovery.
A related problem is information overload. Digital platforms have made it possible for employees to receive large quantities of information almost instantaneously. Emails, instant messages, notifications, project updates, reports and system alerts may compete for employees’ attention. Another concern is that organisations may focus heavily on the productivity benefits of digital technology while paying insufficient attention to the possible negative consequences of excessive technology use. Digital transformation initiatives often emphasise speed, efficiency, automation and connectivity. However, if employees become digitally exhausted, the anticipated productivity gains may be reduced.
The problem is therefore not whether digital technologies are beneficial. Rather, the problem is whether excessive or poorly managed digital demands can undermine the productivity benefits that organisations expect from technological transformation.
Existing studies have examined technostress, workplace telepressure, remote work and videoconferencing fatigue, but there remains a contextual gap regarding digital fatigue and employee productivity within Nigerian technology companies. Studies conducted in other countries may not fully capture the technological infrastructure, organisational culture and work practices of Nigerian technology-driven workplaces.
There is also a practical gap concerning employees of Interswitch Group. While Interswitch operates within a technology-intensive environment, there is limited publicly available empirical evidence specifically examining whether the digital demands experienced by its employees are associated with productivity outcomes.
If digital fatigue is left unaddressed, organisations may experience reduced employee concentration, lower work quality, increased errors, declining engagement and potentially higher absenteeism or turnover. These outcomes could undermine the productivity benefits expected from digital transformation.
The central problem of this study is therefore the limited empirical understanding of the relationship between digital fatigue and employee productivity among employees of Interswitch Group, Lagos. Specifically, it is necessary to determine whether excessive digital exposure, information overload, constant connectivity and digital communication demands are associated with employee productivity.
The study is consequently designed to provide empirical evidence on the relationship between digital fatigue and employee productivity among employees of Interswitch Group, Lagos.
1.3 Aim of the Study
The main aim of this study is to examine the relationship between digital fatigue and employee productivity among employees of Interswitch Group, Lagos.
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The specific objectives are to:
- examine the extent of digital fatigue among employees of Interswitch Group, Lagos;
- determine the major sources of digital fatigue among employees of Interswitch Group;
- examine the effect of prolonged digital technology use on employee concentration and work effectiveness;
- assess the relationship between digital fatigue and employee productivity; and

- To what extent do employees of Interswitch Group, Lagos experience digital fatigue?
- What are the major sources of digital fatigue among employees of Interswitch Group?

- What relationship exists between digital fatigue and employee productivity?
1.6 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between digital fatigue and employee productivity among employees of Interswitch Group, Lagos.
1.7 Significance of the Study
The study will be significant to the management of Interswitch Group because it will provide empirical evidence regarding the extent to which employees experience fatigue arising from digital work demands. The findings may assist management in developing policies and practices that promote productive and sustainable technology use.

1.8 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on Digital Fatigue and Employee Productivity in Technology-Driven Workplaces, with specific reference to employees of Interswitch Group, Lagos.
Conceptually, the study covers digital fatigue, excessive screen exposure, information overload, workplace telepressure, digital interruptions, virtual meeting demands and employee productivity.
Geographically, the study is restricted to employees of Interswitch Group in Lagos State, Nigeria.
The study focuses on employees’ experiences and perceptions of digital work demands and their relationship with productivity. It does not examine the technical performance of Interswitch’s digital platforms or the financial performance of the organisation.
1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
Digital Fatigue: A state of physical, cognitive or psychological exhaustion resulting from prolonged, intensive or excessive interaction with digital technologies and digital communication platforms.
Employee Productivity: The extent to which an employee efficiently and effectively produces expected work outputs within a specified period.
Digital Technology: Electronic technologies and systems used to create, process, store, communicate and exchange information.
Technology-Driven Workplace: An organisational environment in which digital technologies are extensively integrated into routine communication, work processes, decision-making and service delivery.
Technostress: Stress or strain experienced by individuals as a result of difficulties, demands or pressures associated with the use and adaptation to information and communication technologies (Brod, 1984).
Techno-Overload: A situation in which employees perceive that technology requires them to work faster, process more information or handle greater workloads than they otherwise would (Tarafdar et al., 2007).

Information Overload: A situation in which the quantity or complexity of information exceeds an individual’s ability to process it effectively.
Workplace Telepressure: The psychological pressure experienced by employees to respond quickly to work-related electronic communications (Barber & Santuzzi, 2015).
Digital Interruption: The disruption of work activities caused by digital notifications, messages, emails, alerts or other technology-generated interruptions.
Virtual Meeting: A meeting conducted through internet-based video or audio communication platforms rather than through physical face-to-face interaction.
Employee Concentration: The employee’s ability to maintain sustained attention on assigned work tasks without excessive distraction.

1.10 Organisation of the Study
The study is organised into five chapters. Chapter One presents the introduction, background to the study, statement of the problem, aim and objectives, research questions, hypothesis, significance, scope and operational definition of terms. Chapter Two reviews relevant conceptual, theoretical and empirical literature on digital fatigue and employee productivity. Chapter Three presents the research methodology, including the research design, population, sample size, sampling technique, research instrument, validity, reliability, data-collection procedure and method of data analysis. Chapter Four presents, analyses and interprets the data collected from respondents and tests the stated hypothesis. Chapter Five presents the summary of findings, conclusion and recommendations.
