Project – Digital Transformation and Organizational Performance in Nigerian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, digital transformation has emerged as a major driver of competitiveness and performance across industries. Digital transformation involves integrating digital technologies such as cloud computing, big data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), e-commerce, and mobile applications into business operations to enhance efficiency, innovation, and customer engagement (Bharadwaj et al., 2013). For Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), digital transformation is not merely an option but a necessity for survival and growth in a globalized economy.
In Nigeria, SMEs represent over 96% of all businesses and contribute significantly to employment and GDP (Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria [SMEDAN], 2022). However, despite their critical role, many Nigerian SMEs face challenges such as poor infrastructure, limited access to finance, and low technological adoption, which hinder their ability to compete effectively (Olatunji, 2021). The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the need for digital adoption as businesses had to pivot to online platforms to reach customers and sustain operations (Ogunyemi & Adeniran, 2022).
Digital transformation allows SMEs to streamline operations, improve decision-making, and access broader markets through digital tools (Verhoef et al., 2021). Studies have shown that digitalization improves operational efficiency, enhances communication, and drives customer satisfaction (Kraus et al., 2021). However, in the Nigerian context, the extent to which digital transformation translates into improved organizational performance remains underexplored. Issues such as limited digital literacy, high costs of digital tools, and inadequate government support continue to impede the progress of SMEs (Eze et al., 2020).
Hence, this study seeks to examine the impact of digital transformation on organizational performance among Nigerian SMEs, with particular attention to technology adoption, innovation, and customer service efficiency.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the global enthusiasm surrounding digital transformation, many Nigerian SMEs remain digitally underdeveloped. A considerable proportion of these businesses still rely on manual and traditional methods of operation, resulting in inefficiency, poor customer satisfaction, and limited market reach (Olatunji, 2021). The barriers to digital transformation in Nigeria include inadequate digital infrastructure, unreliable electricity supply, lack of technical expertise, and high cost of internet services (Eze et al., 2020).
Moreover, while some SMEs have adopted digital tools such as social media marketing and online payment systems, the integration of these technologies into broader business processes remains shallow and unsystematic. There is limited empirical evidence on how these digital initiatives translate into measurable performance outcomes such as profitability, productivity, and customer retention (Ogunyemi & Adeniran, 2022).
Consequently, the lack of empirical studies on how digital transformation influences organizational performance among SMEs in Nigeria presents a research gap that this study aims to fill.
1.3 Objectives of the Study

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for multiple stakeholders. For policymakers and government agencies such as SMEDAN, the findings will provide insights into how digitalization policies and infrastructural investments can enhance SME performance. For entrepreneurs and SME managers, the research highlights the practical benefits of adopting digital tools to improve competitiveness and service delivery. For academics, the study contributes to the growing body of literature on digital transformation and business performance in developing economies. Finally, it will assist development partners and investors in identifying areas where digital intervention can yield the most impact for Nigerian SMEs (Kraus et al., 2021).
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on selected Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) operating in Lagos State, Nigeria, which is regarded as the country’s commercial hub with a high concentration of digitally active businesses. The study examines the relationship between digital transformation and organizational performance between 2020 and 2024. Key dimensions of digital transformation considered include technology adoption, innovation capacity, and customer engagement.
