CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Early childhood education (ECE) is a crucial stage in human development, focusing on children from birth to around eight years old, a period marked by rapid cognitive, emotional, and social growth (UNESCO, 2015). Pre-nursery schools, as part of formal early childhood education, provide structured learning environments where children acquire foundational skills, including literacy, numeracy, social interaction, and the understanding of moral and societal norms.

Social values are the guiding principles and standards of behavior that are essential for harmonious coexistence within communities. These include honesty, respect, empathy, cooperation, responsibility, and civic-mindedness (Bandura, 1977). The formative years of early childhood are particularly influential in shaping these values, as children develop their attitudes and behaviors through observation, imitation, and interaction with caregivers, teachers, and peers (Bronfenbrenner, 1979).

In Nigeria, early childhood education has received increased attention due to its potential to prepare children for lifelong learning and responsible citizenship (Okeke, 2018). Pre-nursery schools in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State play a critical role in instilling social values among children before they enter formal primary education. However, challenges such as inadequate teacher training, insufficient teaching materials, overcrowded classrooms, and limited parental involvement may hinder the effective development of social values (Adeniran & Oladipo, 2020).

Research indicates that children who receive quality early childhood education are more likely to exhibit pro-social behaviors, empathy, and respect for societal norms (Epstein, 2007). These social competencies are foundational for success in later schooling, interpersonal relationships, and community participation. Therefore, understanding how pre-nursery education contributes to social values development is critical for educators, policymakers, and parents in Osisioma Ngwa LGA and beyond.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of early childhood education in fostering social values, there is a growing concern that children in Osisioma Ngwa LGA may not be adequately developing these values before entering primary school. Observations and anecdotal reports suggest instances of poor social interaction, lack of cooperation, and disrespectful behaviors among young children in community and school settings (Abia State Ministry of Education, 2022).

Several factors may contribute to this challenge. Many pre-nursery schools in Osisioma Ngwa LGA face limited resources, including insufficient teaching aids, inadequate classrooms, and untrained or underqualified teachers. In addition, parental involvement in early socialization is often minimal, due to socio-economic pressures or lack of awareness about the importance of early social values education (Okeke, 2018). Consequently, children may not fully internalize social norms, which can affect their future academic performance, peer relationships, and civic engagement.

While early childhood education is widely recognized as critical for holistic development, there is limited empirical research examining its role specifically in social values development in Osisioma Ngwa LGA. Addressing this gap is important for improving educational strategies, enhancing teacher training, and supporting policies that promote social and moral development in young children.

1.3 Research Objectives

The main objective of this study is to examine the role of early childhood education in the development of social values among children in selected pre-nursery schools in Osisioma Ngwa LGA. Specific objectives include:

1. To assess the level of social values development among children in selected pre-nursery schools.

2. To evaluate the strategies used by pre-nursery schools to promote social values.

3. To determine the influence of early childhood education on social behavior and pro-social attitudes.

4. To identify challenges affecting the effective development of social values in pre-nursery schools.

1.4 Research Questions

1. What is the level of social values development among children in selected pre-nursery schools in Osisioma Ngwa LGA?

2. What strategies are employed by pre-nursery schools to promote social values?

3. How does early childhood education influence social behavior and pro-social attitudes?

4. What challenges affect the effective development of social values in pre-nursery schools?

1.5 Hypothesis

Ho: Early childhood education has no significant impact on the development of social values among children in selected pre-nursery schools in Osisioma Ngwa LGA.
Hi: Early childhood education has a significant impact on the development of social values among children in selected pre-nursery schools in Osisioma Ngwa LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The study is significant in several ways:

• It provides empirical evidence on the role of early childhood education in promoting social values, which can inform educational policy and practice in Osisioma Ngwa LGA.

• It assists educators and school administrators in developing strategies and curricula that foster social and moral development in young children.

• It helps parents understand the importance of early socialization and the role of pre-nursery education in shaping their children’s behavior.

• It contributes to existing literature on early childhood education, social values development, and child development in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on selected pre-nursery schools in Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area, Abia State. It examines the role of early childhood education in the development of social values, including behaviors such as respect, cooperation, empathy, honesty, and responsibility. The study is limited to children aged 3–5 years in pre-nursery programs.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Early Childhood Education (ECE): Formal or informal educational programs designed for children from birth to about eight years, aimed at holistic development including cognitive, social, and emotional skills.

• Social Values: The principles and standards of behavior that guide children in interacting with others, including honesty, respect, empathy, responsibility, and cooperation.

• Pre-Nursery School: An educational setting for children aged 3–5 years that prepares them for formal primary education.
