INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The concept of peace and unity is foundational to the identity and mission of the Church. From its very beginning, the Church has been divinely commissioned to reflect the reconciling love of God through Christ. As a spiritual community born out of the redemptive work of Christ, the Church exists not only to proclaim the gospel but also to embody its transforming power through harmonious relationships among believers. In a world marked by division, violence, and social fragmentation, the Church is called to be a visible sign of God’s peace and unity. However, the growing evidence of internal disunity in the contemporary Church raises significant concerns about its faithfulness to this calling.

Historically, the unity of the Church has been regarded as a theological necessity. In John 17:21 (ESV), Jesus’ high priestly prayer expresses His deep desire for unity among His followers: “That they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you.” This unity is not merely organizational but deeply spiritual, rooted in the oneness of the Triune God. The apostle Paul also exhorts the Church to maintain this unity, declaring in Ephesians 4:4–5 that “There is one body and one Spirit… one Lord, one faith, one baptism.” These scriptural foundations emphasize that unity is integral to the Church’s witness and that division undermines the credibility of the gospel message to a watching world.

Despite these clear biblical imperatives, the modern Church is increasingly fragmented. Across the globe—and particularly in Africa—churches are divided along theological, denominational, ethnic, political, and socioeconomic lines. Doctrinal exclusivism, competition for membership, leadership crises, and cultural prejudices have created an environment of tension and mistrust among Christians. As a result, congregations that were intended to be places of spiritual healing and reconciliation often become battlegrounds for unresolved conflicts. Such internal divisions not only weaken the Church’s internal cohesion but also impair its capacity to serve as an agent of peace and justice in society.

This fragmentation calls for a renewed examination of the Church’s ecclesiological identity—that is, its theological self-understanding concerning its nature, purpose, and mission. Ecclesiology, as a field of study, provides a rich framework through which the Church can rediscover and realign itself with the biblical vision of unity. According to Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen (2017), ecclesiology must be dynamic and responsive, taking into account the cultural and contextual realities that challenge unity while remaining anchored in scriptural truth. When properly understood and applied, ecclesiology moves beyond institutional concerns and invites the Church to become a reconciled and reconciling community in Christ.

An ecclesiological approach to peace and unity, therefore, seeks not only to diagnose the causes of division but to propose spiritual and theological remedies. It shifts the focus from superficial ecumenical gestures to a profound re-engagement with the Church’s identity as the body of Christ. This includes recovering the practices of shared worship, mutual accountability, inclusive leadership, and mission-oriented fellowship. By reorienting itself around these ecclesiological values, the Church can begin to heal the rifts that have long plagued its witness and relationships.

This study explores how ecclesiology can serve as both a theological lens and a practical tool for addressing disunity within the Church. It investigates how a deeper understanding of the Church’s calling can foster peace, strengthen relationships, and revitalize its mission. At a time when division threatens the integrity of the Christian witness, revisiting the ecclesiological foundations of the Church offers a hopeful path forward for nurturing genuine peace and unity in contemporary contexts.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The contemporary Church faces a growing crisis of fragmentation and division, which threatens its spiritual integrity and public witness. Unlike the early Church, which demonstrated remarkable unity in doctrine, fellowship, and mission (Acts 2:42–47), today’s congregations are increasingly marked by internal disputes, competition for membership, denominational splits, and conflicting theological ideologies. These divisions are often exacerbated by cultural, political, and ethnic differences that shape how communities interpret scripture and organize their worship. As a result, many believers become disillusioned by the apparent hypocrisy of a divided Church that preaches unity but fails to live it out.

This disunity is particularly troubling in a time when church expansion is at an all-time high. Across many regions, especially in Africa and other parts of the Global South, there is a proliferation of new churches and ministries. Yet this growth has not necessarily translated into spiritual depth or corporate harmony. Many churches operate in silos, prioritizing their institutional survival and growth over the larger body of Christ. Leaders often guard their doctrinal positions and organizational identities rather than working toward meaningful collaboration or reconciliation. The spiritual formation of members suffers as internal strife overshadows discipleship, mutual love, and biblical teaching.

One of the root causes of this problem is a weakened or misunderstood ecclesiology. The Church, in many contexts, has drifted away from a theological understanding of its identity as the unified body of Christ. Instead, it has adopted business models, political ideologies, or cultural expressions that undermine the New Testament vision of the Church. Ecclesiology, which should offer a robust foundation for understanding the nature, purpose, and unity of the Church, is often neglected or misapplied. Without a clear ecclesiological grounding, efforts at unity tend to be superficial and unsustainable.

Moreover, ecumenical initiatives, though commendable in their intent, frequently fall short of achieving genuine reconciliation and cooperation. Many of these initiatives remain at the leadership or institutional level and fail to engage the broader congregation in shared worship, mission, and fellowship. This has led to a form of unity that is more symbolic than practical, leaving the grassroots Church disconnected and still divided. The result is a weakened Church that struggles to present a compelling witness to a world in desperate need of peace, justice, and reconciliation.

Therefore, this study seeks to critically examine how an ecclesiological framework—rooted in Scripture, enriched by church tradition, and responsive to contemporary realities—can guide the Church toward lasting peace and unity. It aims to explore how a renewed understanding of what it means to be the Church can help local and global congregations move beyond fragmentation and embody the unity for which Christ prayed. Restoring this unity is not only essential for the Church’s internal health but also for its credibility as a reconciled and reconciling community in a divided world.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The primary objective of this study is to explore how an ecclesiological approach can promote peace and unity in the contemporary Church. The specific objectives include:

1. To examine the biblical and theological foundations of ecclesiology regarding peace and unity.
2. To assess the current state of division and disunity in contemporary churches.
3. To evaluate the role of church leadership, liturgy, and community life in fostering unity.
4. To propose ecclesiological strategies that promote peace, reconciliation, and unity among churches today.

1.4 Research Questions

The research questions are buttressed below:

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is theologically significant because it contributes meaningfully to the field of ecclesiology by bridging the gap between doctrinal knowledge and practical application. While many theological discussions remain abstract or disconnected from real church life, this study anchors ecclesiology in the pressing realities of division, conflict, and disunity. It revisits the biblical understanding of the Church as one body in Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12–27) and affirms that unity is not simply an ideal but a theological imperative. By highlighting the role of ecclesiology in shaping how the Church understands itself and functions, the study fosters a renewed commitment to living out the gospel in a communal and unified way.

Furthermore, this study is pastorally important because it addresses the relational and structural challenges many churches face. It provides pastors and church leaders with practical tools and theological insights for fostering peace and reconciliation within their congregations. Instead of relying solely on conflict management techniques or administrative reforms, the study points to the Church’s core identity as a reconciled community under Christ. This pastoral lens makes the study especially valuable in contexts where church splits, leadership struggles, or denominational rivalry are common. Leaders will find guidance for nurturing a church culture rooted in grace, humility, and mutual accountability.

The study is also significant for church members and lay congregants, as it empowers them to actively participate in the pursuit of unity within the body. It affirms that unity is not only the responsibility of church leaders but of every believer who is called to bear with one another in love and maintain the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:1–3). Through this study, members are encouraged to see themselves as integral to the health and witness of the Church. It promotes spiritual maturity, respect for doctrinal diversity within orthodoxy, and a willingness to engage in peacemaking as part of the Christian vocation.

In the Nigerian and broader African context, the study takes on additional relevance. Ethnic identities, tribal affiliations, and denominational allegiances frequently supersede Christian unity, leading to a fragmented Christian witness. Churches often operate in isolation or even in rivalry, influenced by socio-political divisions rather than spiritual oneness. This study challenges such tendencies by calling the African Church to rise above these human boundaries and return to its foundational identity in Christ. It reminds believers that their primary citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20) and that the Church must reflect a unity that transcends tribalism and politics.

On a missional level, the study contributes to the Church’s global witness. In a world plagued by division, hostility, and ideological conflicts, a united Church offers a compelling alternative. The study underscores the fact that unity is not merely for the Church’s internal benefit, but also for the credibility of its gospel message. Jesus Himself prayed for unity so that “the world may believe” (John 17:21), linking the Church’s internal harmony with its external effectiveness. By engaging ecclesiology as a missional imperative, this research speaks to the urgent need for the Church to reflect the reconciliation it preaches.

Finally, this study serves as a valuable academic resource for theological institutions, seminaries, and Christian education programs. It enriches the curriculum on ecclesiology, pastoral theology, and practical ministry, offering students and scholars a framework to critically engage with current issues in Church life. Its interdisciplinary relevance—drawing from biblical studies, theology, leadership, and sociology—makes it a versatile resource for both academic inquiry and ministry formation. In doing so, it contributes to shaping future leaders who will be equipped to build and maintain unity in the Church both locally and globally.

1.6 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on contemporary Christian churches, particularly within the African and global evangelical contexts. It evaluates the ecclesiological understanding of unity and peace across denominations, but gives special attention to churches grappling with ethnic, doctrinal, or leadership-related divisions. The research will draw from biblical, historical, and theological sources, as well as contemporary ecclesial practices.

1.7 Definition of Key Terms

Ecclesiology: Ecclesiology refers to the theological study of the Church—its nature, origin, mission, structure, and role in the world. It examines what it means to be the Church according to Scripture, tradition, and theological reflection. This includes the Church’s identity as the body of Christ, its leadership patterns, sacramental life, spiritual authority, and relationship with the world. Ecclesiology also explores how the Church ought to function in different contexts and how it can remain faithful to its divine calling while adapting to contemporary realities.

Unity: Unity in the Church denotes more than organizational agreement or doctrinal uniformity. It is the spiritual and relational oneness shared among believers, grounded in the Trinitarian nature of God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—who exist in perfect unity. This unity was exemplified in the early Church, where believers “were of one heart and soul” (Acts 4:32). It involves shared belief, mutual love, and a common purpose centered on Christ. Unity is essential for the Church’s witness and mission, as Jesus prayed “that they may all be one… so that the world may believe” (John 17:21).

Peace: In the biblical and ecclesiological sense, peace (from the Hebrew shalom and Greek eirēnē) goes beyond the mere absence of conflict. It refers to a state of spiritual and relational harmony, completeness, and reconciliation among believers and with God. Peace within the Church reflects Christ’s reconciling work and His call for believers to live in mutual love and forgiveness. It is both a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and a vital marker of authentic Christian community. In the context of this study, peace is considered a goal of ecclesial life and a foundation for lasting unity.

Contemporary Church: The term “Contemporary Church” refers to the present-day expressions and structures of the Christian Church around the world, including both local congregations and global movements. It encompasses various denominations, theological traditions, worship styles, and governance models. The contemporary Church is shaped by modern cultural, political, technological, and social dynamics, which both challenge and influence its mission. Understanding the state of the Church today is essential for applying biblical and theological principles, such as those found in ecclesiology, to address issues like division and disunity.

Division: Division within the Church signifies a breakdown of fellowship, unity, or doctrinal agreement, often resulting in schisms, rivalries, or conflicts between individuals, congregations, or denominations. It may arise from theological disagreements, leadership disputes, ethnic or cultural tensions, or political influences. Division undermines the Church’s credibility and mission, directly opposing the biblical call for unity in Christ. In ecclesiological discourse, addressing the causes and consequences of division is a critical step toward restoring the Church’s wholeness and witness in the world.
