Project – Effect of Digital Marketing on the Performance of SMEs in Surulere LGA, Lagos State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Small and Medium‑Sized Enterprises (SMEs) constitute a crucial segment of Nigeria’s economy, significantly contributing to employment creation, gross domestic product (GDP), and sustainable development (Adeniyi et al., 2024). In Lagos State—Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre—SMEs play a vital role in driving economic activity, with Surulere Local Government Area (LGA) being one of the highly dynamic business districts. SMEs in Surulere range from retail shops, eateries, and fashion stores to digital services and creative enterprises. However, despite their prevalence and potential, many of these firms struggle to grow and compete effectively in the fast‑evolving digital marketplace.
Digital marketing involves using online platforms and digital technologies—such as social media, search engines, email marketing, and content marketing—to promote products and services and engage customers (Ilesanmi & Oyedepo, 2023). Unlike traditional marketing approaches, digital marketing allows businesses with limited budgets to reach broader and more targeted audiences, measure campaign performance in real time, and customize messaging to specific customer segments. Digital marketing tools—particularly social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—have become particularly important in Nigeria, given the high mobile penetration and youth engagement in digital spaces (Adeniyi et al., 2024). Despite this, the adoption levels and effective utilization of digital marketing strategies vary widely among SMEs in urban markets such as Surulere. Some businesses have embraced digital channels and reported improved visibility, customer engagement, and sales, while others continue to under‑utilize digital tools due to lack of expertise, resources, or infrastructure (Adeniyi et al., 2024; Ezurike, 2023).
Empirical studies at the national level have underscored the positive influence of digital marketing on SME performance. For example, research on Nigerian SMEs has shown that digital marketing methods—including social media marketing, email marketing, and search engine marketing—have a significant and positive influence on business performance outcomes such as sales growth, market reach, and competitive advantage (Ilesanmi & Oyedepo, 2023; Chibueze & Kalejaiye, 2025). Moreover, other studies in Nigerian contexts indicate that digital marketing adoption significantly enhances SMEs’ customer acquisition, profitability, and overall performance, though many SMEs face challenges like limited technical skills and financial constraints (Ilesanmi & Oyedepo, 2023; Ezurike, 2023).
In Surulere LGA, a dense and competitive business environment, leveraging digital marketing could provide SMEs with the advantages needed to enhance their market presence, drive customer engagement, and increase profitability. However, there is a need for context‑specific investigation into how digital marketing practices directly affect SME performance in this locality. Understanding this relationship can help business owners, policymakers, and development agencies craft strategies to support digital readiness and sustainable growth among SMEs in Surulere and similar urban markets.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized importance of SMEs in economic growth and employment generation, many businesses in Surulere struggle to perform optimally and scale their operations. Traditional marketing methods—such as flyers, word‑of‑mouth, and local signage—remain prevalent among many SMEs, limiting their ability to engage wider audiences and compete effectively in a digitalized economy. Meanwhile, the digital economy continues to expand rapidly, reshaping customer behaviour, expectations, and purchase patterns. Firms that fail to integrate digital strategies often face stagnation, limited customer reach, and declining competitiveness.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that, although SME owners in Surulere may be aware of digital marketing tools, a gap remains between awareness and effective adoption. Challenges such as inadequate digital skills, lack of financial resources to sustain online campaigns, and weak infrastructure (e.g., unstable internet access) have impeded the full utilization of digital marketing channels (Adeniyi et al., 2024). As a result, many SMEs continue to experience sub‑optimal performance indicators—such as slow sales growth, limited customer base expansion, and poor brand visibility—despite operating in one of Nigeria’s most commercially vibrant urban centres.
Although national research highlights the positive relationship between digital marketing and SME outcomes, there is limited empirical evidence focusing specifically on Lagos State and, more narrowly, on Surulere LGA. This localized gap in the literature undermines targeted policy formulation and business support initiatives tailored to the unique socio‑economic dynamics and competitive pressures in Surulere. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate how digital marketing influences SME performance in Surulere LGA, Lagos State, with a view to informing strategies that can enhance business competitiveness and sustainability.
