Project – Effect of Drama Technique on English Language Learning Among Junior Secondary School Students in Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Language remains one of the most fundamental tools through which human beings communicate ideas, express emotions, acquire knowledge, and participate effectively in social activities. Among the various languages used in Nigeria, English occupies a central position because it serves as the official language, the medium of instruction in schools, and an important means of national and international communication. The ability of students to effectively use English language is therefore essential for academic achievement, professional development, and social interaction. Consequently, English language education at the secondary school level focuses not only on grammatical competence but also on developing students’ abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing (Bamgbose, 2011).

Despite the importance of English language in Nigeria’s educational system, students’ achievement and proficiency in the subject have remained a major concern among educators, researchers, and policymakers. Many junior secondary school students experience difficulties in acquiring effective communication skills, vocabulary development, pronunciation, comprehension, and confidence in using English. These challenges have often been attributed to several factors, including teacher-centred instructional approaches, inadequate teaching materials, limited opportunities for practical language use, and students’ low motivation towards language learning (Adebayo, 2019).

Traditional methods of teaching English language in many Nigerian classrooms have largely focused on teacher explanations, memorisation, note-taking, and examination-oriented activities. Although these approaches may assist students in acquiring basic knowledge of language structures, they often provide limited opportunities for active participation, creativity, and meaningful communication. Language learning requires learners to actively engage with words, situations, and social interactions rather than merely memorising rules and concepts. Therefore, contemporary language education advocates the use of learner-centred teaching approaches that encourage participation and practical application of language skills.

One innovative learner-centred approach that has gained attention in language education is the use of drama technique. Drama technique involves the use of dramatic activities, role-playing, simulation, improvisation, storytelling, dialogue performance, and theatrical activities as instructional strategies to facilitate learning. Unlike conventional teaching approaches where students are mainly passive recipients of information, drama-based instruction positions learners as active participants who explore ideas, express themselves, collaborate with others, and construct meaning through experience (Heathcote & Bolton, 1995).

Drama has long been recognised as an effective pedagogical tool because it creates realistic situations where learners can practise language within meaningful contexts. Through drama activities, students are exposed to opportunities for speaking, listening, negotiation of meaning, and interaction with peers. Such activities can improve learners’ confidence, reduce anxiety associated with language use, and encourage spontaneous communication. According to Kao and O’Neill (1998), drama provides language learners with authentic communicative experiences that connect classroom learning with real-life situations.

The effectiveness of drama technique in language learning is also supported by theories of experiential learning and constructivism. Constructivist learning theory suggests that learners actively construct knowledge through interaction, experience, and reflection rather than simply receiving information from teachers (Vygotsky, 1978). Drama aligns with this perspective because students learn by performing roles, engaging in social interactions, solving problems, and reflecting on their experiences. Through collaborative dramatic activities, learners develop not only linguistic competence but also social and cognitive skills.

In English language classrooms, drama techniques can contribute significantly to the development of the four major language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Role-playing activities, for instance, allow students to practise conversations, improve pronunciation, and develop oral fluency. Script writing activities encourage vocabulary development and written expression, while drama performances improve confidence and public speaking abilities. According to Maley and Duff (2005), drama activities provide language learners with opportunities to experiment with language creatively and develop greater awareness of communication processes.

Furthermore, drama technique has been identified as an approach that can increase students’ motivation and interest in learning. Many students perceive English language as difficult or abstract because classroom activities are sometimes disconnected from their daily experiences. Drama introduces creativity, imagination, and enjoyment into the learning environment, making lessons more engaging. When students participate actively in dramatic activities, they are more likely to develop positive attitudes towards English language learning and demonstrate greater commitment to academic tasks (Miccoli, 2003).

The relevance of drama technique is particularly significant at the junior secondary school level, where learners are developing foundational language skills necessary for future academic success. At this stage, students require instructional methods that encourage participation, communication, and confidence building. The use of drama can provide opportunities for students with different learning abilities to participate actively and learn collaboratively.

In Nigeria, studies have shown that innovative instructional strategies can improve students’ academic performance and attitudes towards English language. However, despite the recognised benefits of drama-based teaching, many English language classrooms continue to rely heavily on conventional teaching methods. Teachers may face challenges such as limited training in drama pedagogy, inadequate instructional resources, large class sizes, and pressure to prepare students for standard examinations. These factors may limit the application of drama techniques in secondary schools.

Within Delta State, particularly Isoko South Local Government Area, concerns have been expressed regarding students’ performance and interest in English language learning. Junior secondary school students in the area often require effective instructional approaches that can enhance their communication abilities and academic engagement. Although drama technique has been widely discussed internationally, limited empirical studies have examined its effectiveness among junior secondary school students in Isoko South Local Government Area.

Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the effect of drama technique on English language learning among junior secondary school students in Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State. The study will provide empirical evidence on whether the application of drama-based instructional strategies can improve students’ learning outcomes, participation, and overall understanding of English language.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

English language remains a major subject in Nigeria’s educational system because of its role as the language of instruction, assessment, and national communication. However, despite its importance, many junior secondary school students continue to experience difficulties in achieving effective competence in English language. Poor vocabulary development, weak oral communication skills, inadequate comprehension abilities, and lack of confidence in using English are persistent challenges affecting students’ academic performance.

One major concern contributing to students’ difficulties in English language learning is the continued dominance of conventional teacher-centred instructional approaches. In many classrooms, English lessons are characterised by teacher explanations, textbook reading, grammatical exercises, and memorisation of language rules. While these methods may provide students with theoretical knowledge, they often fail to provide sufficient opportunities for practical language use, creativity, interaction, and communication. As a result, many students possess knowledge of English grammar but struggle to apply the language effectively in real-life situations.

The problem is further complicated by students’ negative attitudes and low motivation towards English language learning. Some learners perceive English as a difficult subject because classroom activities are often abstract and disconnected from their experiences. Lack of active participation may reduce students’ interest and prevent them from developing confidence in speaking and writing English.

Drama technique has been identified as a possible solution to these challenges because it transforms the classroom into an interactive learning environment where students actively practise language through performance, role-play, and communication. However, despite its potential benefits, drama-based instruction is not widely implemented in many public junior secondary schools in Delta State. There is limited evidence regarding whether drama techniques significantly improve English language learning outcomes among students in Isoko South Local Government Area.

Furthermore, while previous studies have examined drama and language learning in different contexts, many have focused on tertiary institutions or foreign educational settings. Few studies have specifically investigated the effect of drama technique on junior secondary school students within the Nigerian local government context. This creates a contextual research gap that requires empirical investigation.

Therefore, the problem of this study is the inadequate evidence regarding the effectiveness of drama technique as an instructional strategy for improving English language learning among junior secondary school students in Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State. This study seeks to address this gap by examining whether the use of drama technique significantly influences students’ English language learning outcomes.

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study
