INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Biology is one of the core science subjects in the Nigerian secondary school curriculum and it plays a vital role in preparing students for careers in medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, nursing, and other life science-related disciplines. It also helps learners to understand living organisms and their interaction with the environment. Despite its importance, students’ performance in Biology in external examinations such as WAEC and NECO has remained inconsistent and often below expectations in many parts of Nigeria, including Lagos State (WAEC Chief Examiners’ Report, various years).
One of the major factors identified as influencing students’ achievement in Biology is the method of instruction used by teachers. Traditional lecture-based methods, which are still widely used in many secondary schools, often make students passive recipients of information. This approach tends to emphasize memorization rather than understanding and application of biological concepts. As a result, students may find it difficult to grasp abstract topics such as cell division, genetics, respiration, and ecological relationships.
In contrast, laboratory-based instruction provides students with hands-on learning experiences where they actively engage in experiments, observations, and scientific investigations. Laboratory activities help learners to connect theoretical concepts with real-life phenomena, thereby improving comprehension and retention. According to Okebukola, P. A. O., science learning becomes more meaningful when students are actively involved in practical experiences rather than passive listening.
Similarly, Abimbola, I. O. emphasized that Biology teaching without practical engagement limits students’ scientific reasoning and problem-solving abilities. Laboratory-based instruction encourages inquiry, critical thinking, collaboration, and scientific skills development, which are essential for academic success in science subjects.
However, despite the recognized benefits of laboratory instruction, many secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State face challenges such as inadequate laboratory facilities, large class sizes, lack of trained laboratory personnel, and insufficient instructional materials. These challenges often lead teachers to rely more on theoretical teaching methods, thereby limiting students’ exposure to practical learning experiences.
Therefore, this study seeks to examine the effect of laboratory-based instruction on students’ academic performance in Biology in selected secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State, Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Over the years, there has been persistent poor performance of secondary school students in Biology in both internal and external examinations in Nigeria. This trend is a source of concern to educators, parents, and stakeholders in the education sector. Despite Biology being a compulsory science subject for many science-related courses, students continue to show low achievement levels, especially in areas requiring practical understanding and application.
One of the major observed problems is the continued dominance of teacher-centered and lecture-based instructional methods in many secondary schools. These methods do not adequately engage students in active learning processes. As a result, learners often struggle to understand complex biological concepts, leading to poor academic performance.
Although laboratory-based instruction has been widely recommended as an effective strategy for improving science education, its implementation in many schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area appears to be inadequate. Some schools lack functional laboratories, while others use laboratories irregularly or only for demonstration purposes rather than full student participation. This situation raises concerns about whether students are truly benefiting from practical science education.
Furthermore, there is limited empirical evidence specifically focusing on the effect of laboratory-based instruction on Biology students’ performance within Ikorodu Local Government Area. Without such localized evidence, it becomes difficult for educational planners and school administrators to make informed decisions regarding instructional strategies and resource allocation.
It is against this background that this study investigates whether laboratory-based instruction significantly influences students’ academic performance in Biology in selected secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos State.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of laboratory-based instruction on students’ academic performance in Biology.
Specifically, the study seeks to:
- Determine the extent to which laboratory-based instruction is used in teaching Biology.
- Examine the relationship between laboratory-based instruction and students’ academic performance in Biology.
- Identify challenges affecting the effective use of laboratory-based instruction in Biology teaching.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions guide the study:
- To what extent is laboratory-based instruction used in teaching Biology in secondary schools?
- What is the relationship between laboratory-based instruction and students’ academic performance in Biology?
- What challenges affect the effective use of laboratory-based instruction in Biology teaching?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant relationship between laboratory-based instruction and students’ academic performance in Biology in selected secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between laboratory-based instruction and students’ academic performance in Biology in selected secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be beneficial to students, teachers, school administrators, curriculum planners, and the education sector at large.
Students will benefit by gaining improved understanding of Biology through practical learning experiences. Teachers will gain insight into the importance of laboratory-based instruction and how it can be effectively integrated into classroom teaching. School administrators will be better informed on the need to equip laboratories and support science teaching.
Curriculum planners such as the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) will use the findings to strengthen science curriculum implementation. The study will also contribute to existing academic literature on science education and instructional methods in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to selected secondary schools in Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria. It focuses on senior secondary school Biology students and examines laboratory-based instruction as it relates to academic performance. Other science subjects and other local government areas are not covered in this study.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Laboratory-Based Instruction: A teaching method in which students learn Biology through practical experiments, observation, and hands-on activities in a laboratory setting.
Academic Performance: The level of achievement of students in Biology as measured by test scores, examinations, and assessments.
Biology: A branch of science that deals with the study of living organisms and their interactions with the environment.
Secondary School: An educational institution that provides post-primary education, typically for students between the ages of 11 and 18.
Instructional Method: The approach or strategy used by teachers to deliver lesson content to students.
