Project – Effect of Organic Manure on the Growth and Yield of Maize: A Case Study of Selected Farms in Nasarawa State.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Agriculture remains an important sector of the Nigerian economy because it provides food, employment, raw materials for industries, and income for millions of rural households. Among the major cereal crops cultivated in Nigeria, maize (Zea mays L.) is particularly important because it is consumed directly by households and used in the production of animal feed and various processed food products. Maize production therefore contributes to household food security, rural livelihoods, and agricultural market activities. However, achieving high and stable maize yields depends on several factors, including soil fertility, rainfall, seed quality, weed control, pest management, and the availability of essential plant nutrients. Soil fertility management is especially important because maize requires adequate nutrients to support vegetative growth, flowering, cob formation, and grain development. Consequently, improving the nutrient status of agricultural soils is a major consideration in efforts to increase maize productivity and sustain crop production in Nigeria (Food and Agriculture Organization [FAO], 2017; Ayoola & Adebayo, 2017).

Soil fertility refers to the capacity of soil to supply plants with essential nutrients in suitable quantities and forms for healthy growth and reproduction. In many tropical farming environments, soil fertility may decline through continuous cultivation, nutrient removal at harvest, erosion, leaching, and insufficient replacement of nutrients. When soil nutrients become inadequate, maize plants may experience slow growth, poor leaf development, reduced plant height, weak stems, delayed reproductive development, and low grain yield. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are particularly important in maize production because they support leaf and root development, energy transfer, enzyme activities, and grain formation. Although inorganic fertilizers can supply these nutrients, their effectiveness depends on application rate, timing, soil characteristics, and the ability of farmers to obtain and apply them appropriately. Ayoola and Adebayo (2017) examined organic fertilizer sources in maize production in southwestern Nigeria and highlighted the relevance of nutrient management practices to crop growth and yield components. Their work supports the need to examine locally available soil amendments as part of sustainable maize production strategies (Ayoola & Adebayo, 2017; Sheahan & Barrett, 2017).

Organic manure is a soil amendment derived from decomposed or processed materials of plant and animal origin. Common examples include poultry droppings, cattle dung, goat manure, pig manure, compost, and decomposed plant residues. These materials contain nutrients that can become available to crops as they decompose, although the quantity and rate of nutrient release depend on the source of manure, its maturity, moisture content, handling, and the prevailing soil and weather conditions. In addition to supplying nutrients, organic manure can contribute to soil organic matter, improve soil structure, support microbial activity, and enhance the soil’s capacity to retain water and nutrients. These characteristics make organic manure relevant to soil fertility management, particularly where soils have low organic matter or where farmers seek to recycle locally available agricultural wastes. Nevertheless, the nutrient composition of manure is variable, and fresh or poorly handled manure may create practical problems. Its use therefore requires appropriate selection, preparation, application rate, and timing to achieve the desired benefits for maize production (FAO, 2017; Olatunji et al., 2020).

The effect of organic manure on maize growth can be assessed through observable vegetative characteristics such as plant height, number of leaves, stem girth, leaf area, and general plant vigour. These parameters help indicate how well maize plants respond to the nutrients and soil conditions available during their growing period. Organic manure may improve vegetative growth by gradually releasing nutrients and improving the soil environment for root development. However, the response is not always uniform because manure types differ in nutrient composition and decomposition rate, while soils differ in texture, acidity, organic matter, and nutrient-holding capacity. Akinmutimi and Azubuike’s study of composted animal manure and NPK fertilizer found that manure treatments influenced maize growth and soil chemical properties under greenhouse conditions, with results varying across the treatments examined. Similarly, Olatunji et al. (2020) reported that livestock manures improved maize growth relative to an unfertilized control in their southwestern Nigerian field experiment. These findings indicate that organic manure has potential to support maize growth, but its performance should be evaluated under the specific conditions in which it is used (Akinmutimi & Azubuike, 2022; Olatunji et al., 2020).

Beyond vegetative growth, the productivity of maize is determined by its reproductive development and the quantity of grain harvested. Important yield-related characteristics include the number of cobs per plant, cob length, cob diameter, number of grains per cob, grain weight, and grain yield per unit area. Healthy vegetative growth can contribute to better yield formation, but a tall or leafy maize plant does not automatically produce the highest grain yield. The final outcome also depends on nutrient availability during flowering and grain filling, water supply, plant population, pest and disease pressure, and other environmental factors. Ayoola and Makinde (2009), in their research on maize growth, yield, and soil nutrient changes under nitrogen-enriched organic fertilizers, demonstrated that the type and enrichment of organic fertilizer can influence maize performance. Olatunji et al. (2020) also compared livestock manures with inorganic fertilizer and an unfertilized control, reporting differences in both growth and yield. These studies establish the importance of evaluating organic manure in relation to measurable yield outcomes rather than assuming that improved soil conditions will always produce the same increase in harvested grain (Ayoola & Makinde, 2009; Olatunji et al., 2020).

Research conducted in Nigeria provides additional evidence that the source and quantity of organic manure, as well as the method of application, can influence maize performance. Ayoola and Adebayo (2017) examined different organic fertilizer sources in southwestern Nigeria, while Bello (2024) investigated poultry manure, compost manure, and methods of application in relation to maize yield and soil nutrient dynamics. The latter study reported improvements in soil nutrient status and maize yield following manure application, with incorporated compost performing particularly well under the conditions examined. These findings are important because they show that the effect of organic manure depends not only on whether it is applied, but also on the material used and how it is managed. However, results from one location cannot automatically be generalized to every farming environment. Differences in rainfall, temperature, soil type, manure availability, maize variety, and cultivation practices may produce different outcomes. It is therefore necessary to assess the growth and yield response of maize under the local conditions of the selected farms in Nasarawa State (Ayoola & Adebayo, 2017; Bello, 2024).

Nasarawa State is an important setting for agricultural research because crop production contributes to the livelihoods of many farming households in the state. The performance of maize on individual farms may vary according to soil fertility, the type and quantity of manure applied, planting practices, rainfall distribution, and farmers’ access to farm inputs. Although studies conducted elsewhere in Nigeria suggest that organic manure can improve soil conditions and maize productivity, the magnitude of the benefit cannot be assumed to be identical across locations. Furthermore, farmers need practical information about which growth and yield characteristics respond to manure application and whether differences between manure-treated and untreated plots are statistically meaningful. The present study therefore focuses on selected farms in Nasarawa State to examine the effect of organic manure on maize growth and yield. By considering both vegetative growth indicators and yield-related characteristics, the study is intended to provide locally relevant evidence that may support informed soil fertility management and more sustainable maize production practices (Olatunji et al., 2020; Bello, 2024).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Maize production is important to food supply and agricultural livelihoods, yet obtaining satisfactory yields requires the maintenance of adequate soil fertility. Where soils lack sufficient nutrients, maize plants may show poor vegetative development and produce fewer or smaller cobs. Organic manure offers a possible means of improving soil fertility because it supplies nutrients and adds organic matter to the soil. However, the benefits obtained depend on the type, quantity, maturity, and method of application of the manure, as well as the soil and environmental conditions. Consequently, the application of organic manure cannot be assumed to improve maize growth and yield equally in every farming situation. This creates a need to examine its effects using measurable growth and yield indicators rather than relying solely on general claims about its benefits (Ayoola & Adebayo, 2017; Olatunji et al., 2020).

A further problem is that the response of maize to organic manure may differ between vegetative growth and final grain production. For example, manure application may improve plant height, leaf development, or stem girth without producing a proportionate increase in the number of cobs or harvested grain. The timing of nutrient release is important because maize requires sufficient nutrients at different stages of development, including flowering and grain filling. The findings of research on organic fertilizers and maize demonstrate that manure sources and nutrient-management treatments can produce different growth and yield responses. It is therefore important to distinguish between improvements in the physical appearance of maize plants and improvements in actual yield, especially when farmers are deciding how to manage their available soil amendments (Ayoola & Makinde, 2009; Olatunji et al., 2020).

Although Nigerian studies have examined the use of poultry manure, compost, livestock manure, and other organic amendments in maize production, findings from other locations may not fully represent the conditions of selected farms in Nasarawa State. Soil characteristics, rainfall patterns, maize varieties, manure sources, application practices, and general farm management may influence the outcome of manure application. Research conducted in one agroecological setting may therefore provide useful guidance without conclusively establishing the response expected in another. The absence of sufficiently specific evidence for the selected farms makes it necessary to investigate how organic manure relates to maize growth and yield in the study area. Such an assessment can help establish whether the observed performance of maize differs according to manure application and which indicators show the clearest response (Bello, 2024; Akinmutimi & Azubuike, 2019).

The central problem addressed by this study is the need for location-specific evidence on the effect of organic manure on maize growth and yield on selected farms in Nasarawa State. Without such evidence, farmers may find it difficult to determine whether the manure available to them is contributing meaningfully to plant development and grain production, or whether differences in crop performance are associated with other farm conditions. This study will therefore examine selected growth characteristics, assess relevant yield components, and compare the performance of maize under the manure-management conditions observed on the selected farms. The findings are expected to provide evidence that can inform farmers, agricultural extension personnel, and other stakeholders about the usefulness and limitations of organic manure as a soil fertility management option in the study area (Ayoola & Adebayo, 2017; Bello, 2024).

1.3 Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of organic manure on the growth and yield of maize on selected farms in Nasarawa State.

The specific objectives are to:

  1. Determine the effect of organic manure on the vegetative growth of maize on selected farms in Nasarawa State.

  2. Examine the effect of organic manure on the yield components of maize, including cob formation and grain development.

  3. Compare the growth and yield performance of maize under organic-manure-treated and untreated conditions, where comparable plots are available.

  4. Identify the organic manure management practices used on the selected farms and assess their implications for maize growth and yield.

1.4 Research Questions

The study will answer the following research questions:

  1. What effect does organic manure have on the vegetative growth of maize on selected farms in Nasarawa State?

  2. What effect does organic manure have on the yield components of maize?

  3. How does the growth and yield performance of maize differ between organic-manure-treated and untreated conditions, where comparable plots are available?

  4. What organic manure management practices are used on the selected farms, and what are their implications for maize growth and yield?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will guide the study and will be tested at the 0.05 level of significance where suitable quantitative data are available.

H₀: Organic manure has no statistically significant effect on the growth and yield of maize on selected farms in Nasarawa State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study may be beneficial to the following groups.

Farmers: The study may help maize farmers understand how organic manure relates to plant growth and grain yield. It may also provide useful information for selecting suitable manure-management practices based on the conditions of their farms.

Agricultural extension workers: The findings may assist extension personnel in providing practical advice on manure preparation, application, and management. They may also use the findings to explain the importance of monitoring plant growth and yield rather than relying only on visual observations.

Government and agricultural policymakers: The study may provide local evidence that can support agricultural programmes focused on soil fertility improvement, sustainable crop production, and the use of locally available agricultural resources.

Researchers and students: The study may contribute to existing literature on organic manure and maize production in Nigeria. It may also provide a basis for further research on manure types, application rates, soil properties, and crop responses in Nasarawa State.

Agricultural development organisations: Organisations working with farmers may find the results useful when developing training programmes on soil management, composting, and sustainable crop production.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on the effect of organic manure on the growth and yield of maize on selected farms in Nasarawa State. Its geographical scope is limited to the farms selected for investigation within the state. The content scope covers the types of organic manure used, vegetative growth indicators such as plant height, number of leaves and stem girth, and yield characteristics such as cob formation and grain production. Where comparable treated and untreated plots are available, their performance will be examined. The study will not assume that differences in maize performance are caused exclusively by manure unless the research design and data adequately support that conclusion.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

The study may be affected by differences in soil fertility, rainfall, maize varieties, planting dates, farm-management practices, and the quality of organic manure used on the selected farms. These factors may influence maize growth and yield independently of manure application. Limited access to farms, financial constraints, and the time available for observing a complete growing season may also affect data collection. To reduce these limitations, the researcher should use consistent measurement procedures, record relevant farm conditions, and clearly distinguish observed associations from effects that can be established through a controlled experiment. The findings should be interpreted within the context of the selected farms rather than generalized automatically to all maize farms in Nasarawa State.

1.9 Operational Definition of Terms
