INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education is widely recognized as a fundamental tool for individual and national development. It plays a vital role in shaping knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary for societal growth. One of the key determinants of effective learning in schools is the school environment. The school environment refers to the physical, social, psychological, and academic conditions within which teaching and learning take place. It includes classroom structures, teaching facilities, teacher-student relationships, school climate, peer interactions, and administrative support systems (UNESCO, 2023).

A conducive school environment is essential for promoting effective teaching and improving students’ academic performance. According to educational researchers, students learn better when they are exposed to well-ventilated classrooms, adequate instructional materials, supportive teachers, and a safe and organized school climate. Conversely, an unconducive school environment characterized by overcrowding, poor infrastructure, lack of learning materials, and poor teacher-student relationships can negatively affect students’ motivation and academic outcomes (OECD, 2023).

In senior secondary schools, academic performance is influenced not only by students’ personal abilities but also by the environment in which learning takes place. The availability of modern instructional facilities such as laboratories, libraries, and ICT resources enhances students’ understanding and retention of concepts. Additionally, a positive school climate encourages active participation, reduces anxiety, and fosters discipline among learners (Steinberg, 2021).

In Nigeria, particularly in Nsukka Local Government Area, there have been growing concerns about the declining academic performance of students in senior secondary schools. Educational stakeholders have linked this issue to factors such as inadequate infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, lack of qualified teachers, and poor maintenance of school facilities. These environmental challenges often limit students’ ability to concentrate and perform effectively in academic tasks (Federal Ministry of Education, 2022).

Furthermore, the psychological and social aspects of the school environment also play a significant role in shaping students’ academic performance. A supportive and encouraging school climate enhances students’ self-esteem and motivation, while a hostile or unconducive environment may lead to absenteeism, lack of interest in learning, and poor academic outcomes. Studies have shown that students’ perception of their school environment significantly influences their academic engagement and success (UNICEF, 2023).

Given the importance of education in national development and the persistent decline in students’ academic performance in senior secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area, it becomes necessary to examine how school environment influences academic performance. This study therefore seeks to investigate the effect of school environment on students’ academic performance in senior secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite government efforts to improve educational standards in Nigeria through funding, policy reforms, and infrastructure development, the academic performance of students in senior secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area continues to raise concern among educators, parents, and policymakers. Many students perform below expectations in internal and external examinations such as WAEC and NECO.

One major issue identified is the poor condition of the school environment in many public secondary schools. Several schools are faced with inadequate classrooms, poor seating arrangements, lack of laboratories, insufficient learning materials, and poorly maintained facilities. These conditions create an unconducive learning environment that may hinder effective teaching and learning processes.

In addition to physical challenges, the social and psychological environment of schools is also a concern. Some schools experience poor teacher-student relationships, lack of discipline, overcrowding, and inadequate supervision, which may negatively affect students’ motivation and concentration. As a result, students may develop poor study habits and reduced academic interest.

Although previous studies have examined factors influencing academic performance, there is still a gap in literature regarding the specific effect of school environment on students’ academic performance in senior secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area. This lack of localized empirical evidence makes it difficult to design targeted interventions for improving educational outcomes in the area.

If this problem is not addressed, continued poor academic performance may lead to increased failure rates, low admission into higher institutions, and reduced human capital development in the region. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effect of school environment on students’ academic performance in senior secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of school environment on students’ academic performance in senior secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area.

Specifically, the study seeks to:

1. Determine the effect of physical school environment on students’ academic performance.
2. Examine the effect of instructional facilities on students’ academic performance.
3. Investigate the effect of teacher-student relationship on students’ academic performance.
4. Determine the effect of school climate on students’ academic performance.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions guide the study:

1. What is the effect of physical school environment on students’ academic performance?
2. What is the effect of instructional facilities on students’ academic performance?
3. What is the effect of teacher-student relationship on students’ academic performance?
4. What is the effect of school climate on students’ academic performance?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The following null hypothesis will be tested at 0.05 level of significance:

H₀: School environment does not significantly affect students’ academic performance in senior secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area.
H₁: School environment significantly affects students’ academic performance in senior secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to students, teachers, school administrators, policymakers, and researchers.

Students will benefit by learning the importance of a conducive school environment in improving academic performance. Teachers will gain insight into how environmental conditions influence teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes.

School administrators will use the findings to improve school facilities and create a more conducive learning environment. Policymakers and government agencies will benefit by using the findings to formulate policies aimed at improving school infrastructure and educational quality.

Researchers will also benefit as the study will serve as empirical literature for future studies on school environment and academic performance.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study is limited to senior secondary schools in Nsukka Local Government Area. It focuses on school environment (physical facilities, instructional resources, teacher-student relationship, and school climate) as the independent variable, and students’ academic performance as the dependent variable. The study does not include private schools or other local government areas.

1.8 Definition of Terms

School Environment: The physical, social, and psychological conditions within the school that influence teaching and learning.

Academic Performance: The level of achievement of students in school subjects as measured by examination scores and class performance.

Physical School Environment: School facilities such as classrooms, furniture, laboratories, and libraries that support learning.

Instructional Facilities: Teaching and learning resources such as textbooks, ICT tools, and laboratory equipment.

Teacher-Student Relationship: The level of interaction, communication, and support between teachers and students.

School Climate: The overall atmosphere of the school, including discipline, safety, and interpersonal relationships.

Senior Secondary School Students: Learners in SS1, SS2, and SS3 levels of secondary education.
