INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Education is universally recognized as a cornerstone for national development, social stability, and economic advancement. It equips individuals with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes required for meaningful participation in society. In Nigeria, secondary education occupies a strategic position in the educational system as it prepares students for higher education and equips them with skills for the labor market. However, the effectiveness of secondary education is largely dependent on the quality of teaching and learning conditions within schools, among which school facilities play a crucial role.

School facilities refer to the physical and material resources available in a school to support teaching and learning processes. These include classrooms, laboratories, libraries, furniture, instructional materials, sanitation facilities, sports equipment, and information and communication technology (ICT) tools. Adequate and well-maintained school facilities provide a conducive learning environment that enhances students’ academic performance.

Students’ academic performance is a key indicator of educational effectiveness and is often measured through examination results, continuous assessments, and overall academic achievements. High academic performance reflects effective teaching, proper learning conditions, and adequate support systems, while poor performance may indicate deficiencies in one or more of these areas.

The relationship between school facilities and students’ academic performance has been widely acknowledged in educational research. Adequate facilities contribute to improved concentration, motivation, and engagement among students. For instance, well-equipped laboratories enable practical learning in science subjects, while functional libraries provide access to learning resources that support academic development. Similarly, comfortable and well-ventilated classrooms create an environment that is conducive to learning.

In contrast, inadequate or poorly maintained facilities can hinder effective teaching and learning. Overcrowded classrooms, lack of furniture, insufficient teaching materials, and poor sanitation can negatively affect students’ ability to concentrate and participate actively in class activities. These conditions can lead to reduced academic performance and increased dropout rates.

In Nigeria, many public secondary schools face challenges related to inadequate school facilities. Despite government efforts to improve educational infrastructure, issues such as dilapidated buildings, insufficient classrooms, lack of laboratories, and inadequate instructional materials persist. These challenges are often attributed to insufficient funding, poor maintenance culture, and rapid population growth.

In Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State, public secondary schools are not exempt from these challenges. The increasing population of students has placed significant pressure on available facilities, leading to overcrowding and overutilization of existing resources. In some schools, classrooms are poorly ventilated, libraries are either non-functional or under-equipped, and laboratories lack essential equipment for practical learning.

Furthermore, the availability and quality of school facilities can influence teachers’ effectiveness, which in turn affects students’ academic performance. Teachers working in well-equipped environments are more likely to deliver effective instruction and engage students in meaningful learning activities. Conversely, inadequate facilities can limit teachers’ ability to use diverse teaching methods, thereby affecting students’ understanding of subject matter.

Scholars such as Ajayi and Yusuf (2009) and Earthman (2002) have emphasized that the quality of school facilities is directly linked to students’ academic outcomes. According to them, students who learn in well-maintained and adequately equipped environments tend to perform better academically than those in poorly equipped schools.

Additionally, the role of government and stakeholders in providing and maintaining school facilities cannot be overemphasized. Effective planning, funding, and monitoring are essential to ensure that schools are equipped with the necessary facilities to support teaching and learning. Community involvement and private sector participation can also contribute to improving school infrastructure.

Despite the recognized importance of school facilities, there is still a need for empirical studies that specifically examine their impact on students’ academic performance in different local contexts. This study therefore seeks to investigate the effect of school facilities on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State has been a subject of concern among educators, parents, and government authorities. Reports of poor performance in both internal and external examinations suggest that many students are not achieving the expected academic standards. This situation raises questions about the factors influencing students’ learning outcomes.

One of the major factors believed to affect academic performance is the availability and quality of school facilities. However, many public secondary schools in Oshimili South are characterized by inadequate and poorly maintained facilities. Classrooms are often overcrowded, with insufficient desks and chairs for students. In some cases, students are forced to sit on the floor or share limited seating arrangements, which can hinder their ability to learn effectively.

Furthermore, the lack of functional laboratories in many schools limits students’ exposure to practical learning, particularly in science subjects. Without access to laboratory equipment and materials, students may find it difficult to understand scientific concepts, which can negatively affect their performance in examinations.

Another significant issue is the absence or inadequacy of libraries in some schools. Libraries are essential for promoting reading culture and providing access to additional learning resources. When libraries are poorly equipped or non-existent, students are deprived of opportunities to enhance their knowledge beyond classroom instruction.

In addition, poor sanitation facilities and lack of basic amenities such as clean water and electricity can create an unfavorable learning environment. These conditions can affect students’ health, attendance, and overall academic performance.

Moreover, the rapid increase in student enrollment without a corresponding expansion of school facilities has exacerbated the problem. Overcrowding in classrooms can lead to poor classroom management, reduced teacher-student interaction, and decreased attention to individual learning needs.

Despite various efforts by the government to improve school infrastructure, the problem of inadequate facilities persists. This suggests that existing interventions may not be sufficient or effectively implemented.

Therefore, there is a need to examine the extent to which school facilities influence students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Oshimili South Local Government Area. This study aims to address this gap by providing empirical evidence on the relationship between school facilities and academic performance and suggesting ways to improve the situation.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of school facilities on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State.

The specific objectives are to:

1. Examine the effect of classroom facilities on students’ academic performance.
2. Assess the influence of laboratory facilities on students’ performance in science subjects.
3. Evaluate the role of library facilities in enhancing students’ academic achievement.
4. Determine the impact of sanitation and other basic facilities on students’ academic performance.

1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Research Hypothesis

H₀: School facilities have no significant effect on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State.

H₁: School facilities have a significant effect on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State.

1.6 Significance of the Study

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the effect of school facilities on students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta State. It covers facilities such as classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and sanitation.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• School Facilities: Physical and material resources used to support teaching and learning.
• Academic Performance: Students’ level of achievement in academic activities measured through tests and examinations.
• Public Secondary Schools: Government-owned schools providing secondary education.
• Laboratory Facilities: Equipment and materials used for practical scientific learning.
• Library Facilities: Resources and spaces that support reading and research activities.
