CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is universally recognized as a fundamental instrument for national development and individual empowerment. At the primary school level, education serves as the foundation upon which all other stages of learning are built. The effectiveness of primary education largely depends on several interrelated factors, one of which is the school physical environment. The physical environment of a school includes school buildings, classrooms, furniture, libraries, playgrounds, sanitation facilities, lighting, ventilation, water supply, and overall school surroundings.
A conducive school physical environment is essential for meaningful teaching and learning to take place. According to Earthman (2004), the quality of school facilities has a direct impact on students’ learning, behavior, and academic performance. Well-designed and adequately maintained school buildings enhance pupils’ concentration, motivation, and attendance, while poor physical conditions can negatively affect pupils’ health, comfort, and learning outcomes.
In developing countries such as Nigeria, the condition of public primary school environments has become a major concern. Many primary schools operate in dilapidated buildings with leaking roofs, cracked walls, overcrowded classrooms, insufficient desks, poor ventilation, and inadequate sanitation facilities. These conditions often create an unconducive learning atmosphere that discourages pupils from active participation in classroom activities. Ajayi and Yusuf (2010) observed that poor school infrastructure contributes significantly to low academic performance and high dropout rates among pupils.
The physical environment also plays a significant role in shaping pupils’ cognitive, emotional, and social development. Classrooms that are well-lit, properly ventilated, and adequately furnished promote comfort and reduce distractions, thereby enhancing learning efficiency. Conversely, noisy, overcrowded, and poorly maintained classrooms can lead to fatigue, stress, and reduced academic engagement among pupils (Uline & Tschannen-Moran, 2008).
In Ilesa, Osun State, primary schools vary widely in terms of physical facilities and infrastructure. While some schools are relatively well equipped, many others lack basic physical resources necessary for effective teaching and learning. Pupils in such schools are often exposed to harsh learning conditions that may hinder their academic performance. Despite government efforts and community interventions, challenges relating to inadequate school physical environments persist, raising concerns about the quality of education delivered at the primary level.
Given the crucial role of the physical environment in pupils’ academic achievement, it becomes imperative to examine how school physical facilities influence pupils’ academic performance. This study therefore seeks to investigate the effect of school physical environment on pupils’ academic performance in five selected primary schools in Ilesa, with a view to providing empirical evidence that can inform educational planning and policy decisions.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The quality of primary education in Nigeria has been a subject of continuous debate among educators, policymakers, and parents. Despite increased enrolment in primary schools following government initiatives such as the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme, pupils’ academic performance in many public primary schools remains unsatisfactory. One major factor suspected to contribute to this problem is the poor condition of school physical environments.
In many primary schools in Ilesa, classrooms are overcrowded, poorly ventilated, and inadequately furnished. Pupils often sit on broken chairs or on the floor, while some classrooms lack proper windows and doors. In addition, essential facilities such as libraries, playgrounds, clean water supply, and functional toilets are either inadequate or completely absent in some schools. These conditions expose pupils to discomfort, health risks, and distractions that may negatively affect their learning ability.
Teachers working in such environments also face challenges in delivering effective instruction, as poor physical conditions limit the use of instructional materials and innovative teaching methods. Consequently, pupils may struggle to understand lessons, leading to poor academic outcomes. Although several studies have examined factors affecting pupils’ academic performance, limited attention has been given specifically to the influence of school physical environment at the primary school level in Ilesa.
The persistent decline in pupils’ academic performance raises critical questions about whether the physical conditions of schools play a significant role in shaping learning outcomes. Without empirical evidence on this issue, efforts to improve pupils’ academic performance may remain ineffective. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the effect of school physical environment on pupils’ academic performance in selected primary schools in Ilesa.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of school physical environment on pupils’ academic performance in selected primary schools in Ilesa.
Specifically, the study seeks to:

examine the condition of physical facilities available in the selected primary schools;

determine the relationship between classroom environment and pupils’ academic performance;

assess the influence of school facilities such as libraries, furniture, and sanitation on pupils’ learning outcomes.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions guide the study:

What is the condition of the physical environment in the selected primary schools in Ilesa?

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The study is guided by the following hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: There is no significant effect of school physical environment on pupils’ academic performance in selected primary schools in Ilesa.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study will be beneficial to school administrators, teachers, government agencies, parents, and educational planners. School administrators will gain insights into the importance of maintaining a conducive physical environment for effective teaching and learning. Teachers will benefit by understanding how classroom conditions influence pupils’ engagement and performance. Government and educational policymakers may use the findings to improve infrastructure development and resource allocation in primary schools. Parents and community stakeholders will also become more aware of the need to support school improvement initiatives.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study is limited to examining the effect of school physical environment on pupils’ academic performance in five selected primary schools in Ilesa, Osun State. The study focuses on physical facilities such as classrooms, furniture, libraries, sanitation, and school surroundings.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

School Physical Environment: The physical facilities and conditions within a school, including buildings, classrooms, furniture, lighting, ventilation, and sanitation.

Academic Performance: The level of pupils’ achievement in school subjects as measured by test scores or examination results.
