Project – Effectiveness of Career Guidance Programmes on Students’ Career Decision-Making Process – A Case Study of Secondary Schools in Abuja Municipal Area Council, FCT

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education is universally recognized as a vital instrument for personal development, economic growth, social transformation, and national progress. One of the major objectives of education is to prepare individuals for productive participation in society through the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, and competencies necessary for career development and lifelong learning. In contemporary society, where occupational opportunities are increasingly diverse and competitive, students require adequate guidance and support to make informed career choices. Consequently, career guidance programmes have become an essential component of secondary school education aimed at assisting students in understanding themselves, exploring occupational opportunities, and making appropriate career decisions (UNESCO, 2021).

Career decision-making is a complex developmental process through which individuals identify, evaluate, and select career options that align with their interests, abilities, values, and aspirations. The process involves gathering information about oneself and the world of work, evaluating available alternatives, and choosing a career path that offers satisfaction and opportunities for growth. According to the career development theory of Super (1990), career choice is not a single event but a lifelong developmental process influenced by personal characteristics, environmental factors, educational experiences, and social interactions. Secondary school students are at a critical stage of career development because many of the decisions they make regarding subject selection, academic specialization, and future educational pursuits significantly influence their occupational prospects.

In Nigeria, career decision-making among secondary school students has become increasingly challenging due to rapid technological advancement, globalization, changing labour market demands, and the proliferation of career opportunities. Many students face difficulties in selecting suitable careers because they lack adequate knowledge of their abilities, interests, and available occupational opportunities. Research indicates that students often make career choices based on peer influence, parental expectations, societal prestige, financial considerations, and misconceptions about occupations rather than objective self-assessment and career information (Salami, 2020). Such uninformed decisions frequently result in career dissatisfaction, poor academic performance, unemployment, and occupational instability later in life.

Career guidance programmes were introduced into Nigerian schools to address these challenges and facilitate effective career planning among students. Career guidance involves a systematic process of helping individuals understand themselves, acquire career-related information, develop decision-making skills, and make realistic educational and occupational choices (Makinde, 2019). The programme encompasses various activities such as career counselling, vocational assessment, career information services, career talks, seminars, mentorship programmes, excursions to workplaces, and orientation programmes designed to assist students in making informed career decisions.

The importance of career guidance programmes in secondary schools cannot be overemphasized. Effective career guidance helps students identify their talents, interests, values, and strengths while exposing them to available educational and occupational opportunities. It also equips students with decision-making competencies necessary for navigating complex career choices. According to Egbo (2021), career guidance enhances students’ self-awareness, promotes realistic career aspirations, and reduces uncertainty associated with career selection. Furthermore, students who receive effective career guidance are more likely to make appropriate career choices that correspond with their abilities and long-term goals.

Globally, career guidance programmes have been recognized as important mechanisms for promoting educational success and workforce development. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD, 2022) emphasized that career guidance supports young people in making transitions from education to employment by providing relevant information and career planning skills. Similarly, studies conducted in Europe, Asia, and North America have demonstrated that students who participate in structured career guidance programmes exhibit higher levels of career maturity, career adaptability, and career decision-making competence than those without such exposure (Hooley et al., 2021).

In Nigeria, the Federal Government recognizes guidance and counselling services as essential components of the educational system. The National Policy on Education emphasizes the need for guidance services to assist learners in making appropriate educational and vocational choices (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2014). Consequently, guidance counsellors have been deployed to secondary schools to facilitate students’ academic, personal, social, and career development. Despite these efforts, many students continue to experience difficulties in making informed career decisions.

Several studies have reported that Nigerian secondary school students often possess limited knowledge of career opportunities and frequently make career choices without adequate guidance. Akinade (2020) observed that many students choose careers based on societal stereotypes and parental influence rather than personal interests and competencies. Similarly, Eremie and Jackson (2021) found that inadequate career information contributes significantly to poor career decision-making among secondary school students. These findings suggest that the availability and effectiveness of career guidance programmes remain critical issues in the Nigerian educational system.

The effectiveness of career guidance programmes depends on several factors, including the availability of qualified counsellors, access to career information resources, administrative support, student participation, and the quality of guidance activities. According to Nweze and Okolie (2022), schools with functional guidance and counselling units tend to record better outcomes in students’ career planning and decision-making than schools where such services are poorly implemented. Effective career guidance programmes provide students with opportunities to explore career options, assess their abilities, interact with professionals, and develop realistic career goals.

Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), located within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), hosts a large number of public and private secondary schools with students from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. The increasing complexity of career opportunities and educational pathways presents significant challenges for students in the area. Although career guidance services exist in many secondary schools within AMAC, concerns remain regarding students’ ability to make informed career decisions. Cases of inappropriate subject combinations, unrealistic career aspirations, and poor alignment between students’ abilities and career choices continue to be reported by educators and counsellors.

Furthermore, the dynamic nature of the modern labour market demands that students receive adequate career preparation to compete effectively in future occupations. As technological innovation continues to reshape employment opportunities, career guidance programmes have become more important than ever in helping students adapt to changing workplace requirements and emerging professions (OECD, 2022). Therefore, assessing the effectiveness of career guidance programmes in enhancing students’ career decision-making processes is necessary for improving educational outcomes and workforce preparedness.

Despite the recognized importance of career guidance programmes, empirical evidence regarding their effectiveness in influencing students’ career decision-making processes in secondary schools within Abuja Municipal Area Council remains limited. This gap in knowledge necessitates an investigation into the effectiveness of career guidance programmes on students’ career decision-making processes in secondary schools in Abuja Municipal Area Council, Federal Capital Territory.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Career decision-making is one of the most important developmental tasks facing secondary school students because it influences their educational pursuits, occupational aspirations, and future life opportunities. Ideally, students are expected to make career choices based on adequate knowledge of their interests, abilities, values, personality traits, and available occupational opportunities. However, observations indicate that many secondary school students experience difficulties in making informed career decisions.

In Nigeria, many students select careers without sufficient understanding of the requirements, prospects, and realities associated with their chosen occupations. Studies have shown that students’ career choices are often influenced by parental pressure, peer groups, societal expectations, financial considerations, and misconceptions about certain professions (Akinade, 2020; Eremie & Jackson, 2021). As a result, some students pursue educational pathways that are inconsistent with their abilities, interests, and career goals.

The inability of students to make appropriate career decisions has several negative consequences. It may result in poor academic performance, low motivation, career dissatisfaction, frequent changes in educational programmes, unemployment, and underemployment. Furthermore, inappropriate career choices can lead to frustration and reduced productivity in adulthood, thereby affecting both individual well-being and national development (Egbo, 2021).

Career guidance programmes were established in secondary schools to assist students in overcoming these challenges through career counselling, vocational information services, aptitude assessment, career seminars, and other guidance activities. These programmes are expected to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective career planning and decision-making. However, despite the presence of guidance and counselling units in many schools, concerns persist regarding the effectiveness of these programmes in influencing students’ career choices.

In Abuja Municipal Area Council, there are indications that some students continue to exhibit uncertainty, confusion, and lack of adequate career information when making educational and occupational decisions. Reports from educators and counsellors suggest that students often choose careers based on external influences rather than objective self-assessment and professional guidance. This raises questions about the effectiveness of existing career guidance programmes in facilitating sound career decision-making among students.

Although previous studies have examined career guidance and career choice in different parts of Nigeria, limited attention has been given to assessing the effectiveness of career guidance programmes on students’ career decision-making processes in secondary schools within Abuja Municipal Area Council. It is against this backdrop that this study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of career guidance programmes on students’ career decision-making process in secondary schools in Abuja Municipal Area Council, Federal Capital Territory.
