INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study

However, the persistent challenge of poor performance in mathematics has been highlighted by numerous researchers, with cognitive skill deficits being a significant contributor (Owolabi, 2011). Cognitive skills in mathematics—such as reasoning, problem‑solving, analysis, and logical thinking—are central to learners’ ability to understand and apply mathematical concepts (Anamuah‑Mensah, 2004). Traditional instructional methods, which often rely heavily on lectures and rote memorization, have been criticized for failing to effectively develop these skills (Onyemah, 2017).
In recent years, Computer‑Based Learning (CBL) has emerged as an innovative instructional strategy that integrates technology into teaching and learning. 1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite ongoing educational reforms in Nigeria emphasizing ICT integration, there remains persistent underachievement in mathematics among secondary school students (NNEA, 2020). Reports from school examinations in Plateau State indicate low pass rates in mathematics, with many students struggling to demonstrate higher‑order cognitive skills such as analysis, problem‑solving, and logical reasoning (Plateau State Ministry of Education, 2022). In Jos North LGA, anecdotal evidence from teachers and school administrators suggests that conventional teaching methods may not sufficiently engage students or enhance the cognitive processes required for success in mathematics (Interview with Mathematics Teachers, 2025).

This study is guided by the following research questions:

1.4 Research Objectives
The general objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of Computer‑Based Learning on students’ cognitive skills in mathematics. The specific objectives are to:
