Project – Effectiveness of Peer Tutoring Strategy in Improving Grammar Achievement and Writing Skills among Senior Secondary School Students in Rivers State
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Language is a fundamental instrument of human communication and a major means through which individuals acquire, organize, and transmit knowledge. In formal education, language proficiency plays a significant role in students’ academic success because it influences their ability to understand learning materials, express ideas, participate in classroom interactions, and demonstrate knowledge across different subject areas. In Nigeria, English Language occupies a unique position as the official language and the major medium of instruction in secondary and tertiary institutions (Federal Republic of Nigeria [FRN], 2014). Consequently, effective mastery of English Language skills is essential for students’ educational advancement, social interaction, and future professional opportunities.
At the senior secondary school level, English Language education is designed to develop students’ competence in the four major language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, alongside knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. Grammar serves as the foundation upon which effective communication is built because it provides learners with the rules and structures necessary for producing meaningful and accurate sentences. Similarly, writing skill enables students to organize thoughts, communicate ideas effectively, present arguments, and express creativity through written forms. Therefore, competence in grammar and writing is essential for students’ academic performance and success in external examinations.
Despite the importance of grammar competence and writing ability, many senior secondary school students in Nigeria continue to experience difficulties in these areas. Reports from examination bodies, particularly the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), have consistently identified weaknesses among candidates in sentence construction, grammatical accuracy, organization of ideas, vocabulary usage, coherence, and overall writing proficiency (WAEC, 2023). These challenges suggest that many students complete secondary education without acquiring the level of writing competence required for higher education and effective communication.
The persistent weakness in students’ grammar achievement and writing skills has been attributed to several factors, including inadequate instructional methods, limited opportunities for writing practice, poor reading culture, insufficient feedback from teachers, lack of motivation, and overdependence on teacher-centred approaches. In many English Language classrooms, teachers remain the primary source of knowledge while students assume passive roles. Lessons often emphasize memorization of grammatical rules and examination preparation rather than active language use, interaction, and practical application.
Traditional approaches to grammar instruction frequently focus on explanation of grammatical concepts followed by exercises requiring students to identify errors or provide predetermined answers. Although explicit grammar teaching has value, excessive dependence on teacher explanations may limit students’ opportunities to apply grammatical knowledge independently. Effective language learning requires active engagement where learners practise, receive feedback, revise their work, and develop confidence in using language accurately.
One instructional strategy that has gained considerable attention in educational research is peer tutoring. Peer tutoring is a teaching and learning approach in which students provide instructional support to one another under structured conditions. In peer tutoring arrangements, students who possess greater understanding of a particular concept assist their classmates, while both tutors and learners benefit from the interaction process (Topping, 2005). Unlike traditional teacher-led instruction, peer tutoring promotes active participation, cooperation, communication, and shared responsibility for learning.
The theoretical foundation of peer tutoring is strongly connected to Vygotsky’s (1978) Social Constructivist Theory, which emphasizes that learning occurs through social interaction and collaboration with others. Vygotsky argues that learners can achieve higher levels of understanding when supported by more knowledgeable individuals within their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). In educational settings, peers can provide meaningful assistance that helps learners accomplish tasks they may not successfully complete independently.
Peer tutoring also reflects principles of Bandura’s (1986) Social Learning Theory, which explains that individuals learn through observation, imitation, interaction, and feedback. During peer tutoring activities, students observe effective language use, discuss learning challenges, explain concepts, and receive immediate responses from their peers. These experiences contribute to improved understanding and skill development.
According to Topping (2005), effective peer tutoring involves structured interaction between learners where one student provides support and guidance to another. Successful peer tutoring programmes require appropriate planning, clear objectives, tutor preparation, monitoring, and feedback. When properly implemented, peer tutoring can improve academic achievement, develop communication skills, increase learner confidence, and create supportive learning environments.
Peer tutoring is particularly relevant to grammar instruction and writing development because both areas require continuous practice, correction, and revision. Writing is not simply a product but a process involving planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Through peer tutoring, students can evaluate each other’s written work, identify grammatical errors, suggest improvements, and discuss effective writing strategies. Such interaction enables learners to become more aware of language structures and develop stronger editing skills.
Graham and Perin (2007) emphasize that effective writing instruction should involve explicit teaching, collaborative writing activities, feedback, and opportunities for students to practise writing regularly. Peer tutoring supports these principles by creating opportunities for students to discuss writing tasks, exchange ideas, provide constructive criticism, and improve their compositions through revision.
Similarly, Hyland (2019) argues that writing development, particularly in second-language contexts, is enhanced when learners engage in meaningful communication and receive feedback on their written work. Peer feedback encourages students to think critically about language choices, sentence structures, organization, and clarity of expression. Through this process, students develop greater awareness of writing conventions and improve their ability to communicate effectively.
Peer tutoring can also improve students’ motivation and attitudes toward English Language learning. Many learners experience anxiety when writing or answering grammar questions because they fear making mistakes in front of teachers and classmates. A peer-supported environment may reduce such anxiety by creating a more relaxed atmosphere where students feel comfortable asking questions, discussing difficulties, and learning from errors. This increased confidence can contribute positively to academic achievement.
Research evidence has demonstrated the effectiveness of peer tutoring in various educational contexts. Falchikov (2001) reported that peer-assisted learning improves students’ academic performance, communication skills, and confidence while promoting active engagement in learning. Similarly, Johnson, Johnson, and Smith (2014) found that collaborative learning approaches involving peer interaction produce significant academic and social benefits compared with traditional competitive or individual learning methods.
In language education, peer tutoring has been shown to support vocabulary development, reading comprehension, grammar learning, oral communication, and writing improvement. Since language learning requires frequent practice and interaction, peer tutoring provides learners with additional opportunities to use language beyond teacher-directed classroom activities. Students become active participants who contribute to the learning process rather than passive recipients of information.
The importance of peer tutoring is also consistent with contemporary educational reforms emphasizing learner-centred instruction. The Nigerian National Policy on Education encourages teaching approaches that promote active participation, independent learning, cooperation, creativity, and problem-solving (FRN, 2014). Peer tutoring aligns with these objectives because it encourages students to take responsibility for their learning while supporting the progress of their classmates.
Within Rivers State, senior secondary schools continue to face challenges associated with students’ performance in English Language. Teachers frequently report difficulties related to students’ weak grammatical foundation, poor writing organization, limited vocabulary, and inability to express ideas effectively. These challenges affect students’ performance not only in English Language examinations but also across other subjects where written communication is required.
Although teachers play a central role in improving students’ language competence, increasing classroom demands, large class sizes, and limited instructional time often make it difficult for teachers to provide individualized attention and detailed feedback to every learner. Peer tutoring may provide an alternative approach by extending learning support beyond the teacher and encouraging students to learn collaboratively.
However, despite the potential benefits of peer tutoring, its application in Nigerian secondary school English Language classrooms remains relatively limited. Many teachers continue to rely mainly on conventional instructional methods, partly due to inadequate training, limited awareness of peer tutoring techniques, and concerns about classroom management. Furthermore, there is insufficient empirical evidence regarding the extent to which peer tutoring can improve grammar achievement and writing skills among senior secondary school students in Rivers State.
Although previous studies have examined peer tutoring in different educational contexts, fewer studies have specifically investigated its effectiveness in improving English grammar achievement and writing skills within the Rivers State secondary school environment. Differences in school conditions, learner characteristics, teacher competence, curriculum implementation, and available resources make local investigation necessary.
Therefore, this study seeks to examine the effectiveness of peer tutoring strategy in improving grammar achievement and writing skills among senior secondary school students in Rivers State. The findings will provide empirical evidence on whether peer tutoring can serve as an effective instructional strategy for strengthening students’ English Language competence and improving their academic outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
English Language proficiency remains a major requirement for academic success and effective communication in Nigeria. At the senior secondary school level, students are expected to demonstrate competence in grammar usage, sentence construction, vocabulary development, and written expression. These skills are essential because students rely heavily on English Language not only as a subject but also as the medium through which knowledge is acquired and communicated across different academic disciplines. However, despite the importance of grammar achievement and writing skills, many senior secondary school students continue to demonstrate poor performance in these areas.
Reports from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have consistently revealed that many candidates experience difficulties in English Language, particularly in writing tasks requiring proper organization of ideas, grammatical accuracy, appropriate vocabulary usage, sentence structure, and coherent expression (WAEC, 2023). Students often produce poorly structured compositions, commit frequent grammatical errors, and demonstrate limited ability to communicate ideas effectively in written form. These persistent weaknesses raise concerns about the effectiveness of existing approaches used in teaching grammar and writing in secondary schools.
One of the major problems affecting students’ grammar achievement and writing proficiency is the continued dominance of teacher-centred instructional methods. In many secondary school classrooms, English Language teaching is still largely based on teacher explanations, note-taking, memorization of grammatical rules, and completion of exercises with limited interaction. Although these methods may enable teachers to cover curriculum content, they often provide inadequate opportunities for students to actively practise language skills, receive individualized feedback, and develop confidence in using English correctly.
Grammar learning requires more than memorizing rules; it requires consistent practice, application, correction, and reflection. Similarly, writing development involves a continuous process of planning, drafting, reviewing, revising, and editing. However, many students receive limited opportunities to engage in these processes due to large class sizes, limited instructional time, and teachers’ workload. Consequently, learners may struggle to identify and correct their own errors or improve their writing abilities independently.
Another significant challenge is students’ limited motivation and confidence toward English Language learning. Some learners perceive grammar as complicated and writing tasks as difficult because they fear making mistakes or receiving negative evaluations. This anxiety often reduces their willingness to participate actively in classroom activities. As a result, many students become dependent on teachers for corrections and explanations rather than developing independent learning abilities.
Peer tutoring strategy has been identified as a possible approach for addressing these challenges. By allowing students to support one another through structured learning activities, peer tutoring creates additional opportunities for interaction, explanation, feedback, and practice. Students who act as tutors strengthen their own understanding by explaining concepts to others, while learners benefit from receiving assistance in a less intimidating environment (Topping, 2005). This approach may be particularly useful in grammar and writing instruction, where continuous practice and feedback are essential.
However, despite the potential advantages of peer tutoring, its implementation in Nigerian secondary school English Language classrooms remains limited. Many teachers continue to rely on conventional methods due to insufficient knowledge of peer tutoring techniques, concerns about maintaining classroom control, limited training opportunities, and uncertainty about its effectiveness within local school contexts.
Furthermore, while several international studies have established the benefits of peer tutoring for academic achievement, relatively few studies have specifically examined its effectiveness in improving grammar achievement and writing skills among senior secondary school students in Rivers State. Existing studies have often focused on general academic performance or other subjects, leaving a gap regarding its application in English Language instruction.
The absence of sufficient empirical evidence creates uncertainty among English Language teachers, school administrators, and policymakers regarding whether peer tutoring should be adopted as a major instructional strategy for improving students’ language competence. Without research-based evidence, schools may continue using instructional approaches that have not fully addressed students’ persistent difficulties in grammar and writing.
Therefore, the problem of this study is that despite the importance of grammar achievement and writing skills for students’ academic success, many senior secondary school students in Rivers State continue to demonstrate inadequate proficiency in these areas. It is against this background that this study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of peer tutoring strategy in improving grammar achievement and writing skills among senior secondary school students in Rivers State.
