INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Religious education plays a critical role in shaping the intellectual, moral, and spiritual development of children. Among various forms of religious education, Sunday school programs have historically served as a primary avenue for imparting biblical knowledge and Christian teachings to children. Sunday schools are structured programs conducted by churches, typically on Sundays, which combine religious instruction, moral lessons, and interactive activities to nurture faith and understanding of biblical principles (Smith & Denton, 2005).

In Nigeria, Sunday school programs have long been an essential component of Christian upbringing, especially in urban centers like Lagos State, where diverse religious and cultural influences are prominent. These programs aim to educate children on the stories, teachings, and ethical values found in the Bible, fostering a foundation for spiritual growth, moral development, and personal discipline (Adeyemo, 2016). Participation in Sunday school is believed to enhance children’s biblical knowledge, strengthen their faith, and equip them with moral guidelines to navigate life’s challenges.

Ojo Local Government Area (LGA) in Lagos State is a vibrant urban community with a large population of Christian families and numerous churches that run Sunday school programs for children of various age groups. Despite the widespread availability of Sunday schools, anecdotal evidence and church reports suggest varying levels of biblical knowledge among children, raising questions about the effectiveness of these programs in achieving their educational objectives. Some children exhibit strong biblical understanding and moral behavior, while others demonstrate limited knowledge or fail to apply biblical teachings in their daily lives (Okeke, 2017).

The effectiveness of Sunday school programs may be influenced by several factors, including teaching methods, the qualifications and commitment of instructors, the curriculum used, parental involvement, and children’s level of interest and engagement (Hernandez, 2018). Moreover, in urban areas like Ojo, distractions such as technology, social media, peer influence, and secular educational activities may affect children’s participation and learning outcomes in Sunday school. Understanding the factors that contribute to or hinder the effectiveness of Sunday school programs is crucial for improving religious education and ensuring that children acquire meaningful biblical knowledge.

Given the importance of spiritual and moral formation in childhood, evaluating the effectiveness of Sunday school programs in Ojo LGA will provide valuable insights for church leaders, educators, and parents. Such evaluation will inform strategies for enhancing curriculum delivery, teaching approaches, and engagement methods to improve children’s understanding and retention of biblical teachings.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the long-standing presence of Sunday school programs in Ojo LGA, there remains concern about whether these programs effectively enhance children’s biblical knowledge. Reports from church leaders and parents indicate that while some children demonstrate strong familiarity with biblical stories and principles, many struggle to recall, understand, or apply these teachings in their daily lives (Okeke, 2017).

Several factors could account for the limited effectiveness of Sunday school programs. Inadequate teaching methodologies, overcrowded classrooms, inconsistent attendance, lack of age-appropriate curriculum, and limited parental reinforcement at home may all reduce the impact of religious instruction. Furthermore, the growing influence of modern technology, social media, and urban distractions may compete with children’s attention and engagement in Sunday school programs (Hernandez, 2018).

This gap between the intended outcomes of Sunday school education and the actual biblical knowledge demonstrated by children highlights the need for empirical research. Without systematic evaluation, it is difficult for church leaders and educators to identify the strengths and weaknesses of existing programs and to implement strategies to improve learning outcomes. Therefore, this study seeks to assess the effectiveness of Sunday school programs in enhancing biblical knowledge among children in Ojo LGA, Lagos State, and to identify the factors that influence program success.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Sunday school programs in enhancing biblical knowledge among children in Ojo LGA, Lagos State. The specific objectives are:

1. To assess the level of biblical knowledge among children attending Sunday school programs in Ojo LGA.

2. To evaluate the teaching methods and curriculum used in Sunday school programs.

3. To examine the relationship between attendance in Sunday school programs and children’s biblical knowledge.

4. To identify challenges affecting the effectiveness of Sunday school programs in enhancing biblical knowledge.

1.4 Research Questions

The study seeks to answer the following research questions:

1. What is the level of biblical knowledge among children attending Sunday school programs in Ojo LGA?

2. What teaching methods and curriculum are employed in Sunday school programs in Ojo LGA?

3. Is there a relationship between children’s attendance in Sunday school programs and their level of biblical knowledge?

4. What are the challenges affecting the effectiveness of Sunday school programs in Ojo LGA?

1.5 Hypothesis

The study will test the following hypothesis:

H₀: There is no significant relationship between attendance in Sunday school programs and biblical knowledge among children in Ojo LGA.
H₁: There is a significant relationship between attendance in Sunday school programs and biblical knowledge among children in Ojo LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will have several benefits:

• For church leaders: It will provide insights into the effectiveness of current Sunday school programs and guide improvements in teaching methods and curriculum design.

• For educators: It will inform best practices for delivering religious education to children in urban settings.

• For parents and guardians: It will help them understand the importance of supporting children’s participation in Sunday school programs.

• For policymakers and religious organizations: It will provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening the impact of Sunday school education.

• For future research: It will serve as a foundation for further studies on religious education and childhood moral development.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study focuses on children attending Sunday school programs in selected churches within Ojo LGA, Lagos State. It examines the level of biblical knowledge among children, the teaching methods employed, attendance patterns, and challenges affecting program effectiveness. The study is limited to children aged 6–14 years and focuses on the academic year under review.

1.8 Definition of Terms

• Sunday School Programs: Organized religious classes conducted by churches to teach children about the Bible, Christian principles, and moral values.

• Biblical Knowledge: The understanding and retention of stories, teachings, and moral principles found in the Bible.

• Effectiveness: The extent to which Sunday school programs achieve their intended goal of enhancing children’s biblical knowledge.

• Children: Individuals aged 6–14 years enrolled in Sunday school programs within Ojo LGA.
