INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Mathematics is a fundamental component of education, equipping students with problem-solving, analytical, and logical reasoning skills necessary for everyday life and academic advancement (Aina & Ogunsanya, 2018). Among the various branches of mathematics, trigonometry is critical for understanding relationships between angles and sides of triangles and has applications in physics, engineering, architecture, and other scientific fields (Owolabi, 2019). Despite its importance, many senior secondary school students find trigonometry challenging due to its abstract concepts, difficulty in visualizing angles and functions, and poor instructional methods.
The use of visual aids has been recognized as an effective instructional strategy in teaching mathematics, particularly for abstract topics such as trigonometry (Nworgu, 2015). Visual aids include charts, diagrams, graphs, models, animations, and computer-assisted illustrations that allow students to see and interact with mathematical concepts. By providing concrete representations of abstract ideas, visual aids help students develop deeper understanding, improve retention, and foster problem-solving skills (Onwu & Agu, 2019).
Research has shown that teaching with visual aids can enhance students’ performance in mathematics by improving conceptual understanding and stimulating interest in learning (Ajayi & Adeyemi, 2020). However, in many Nigerian senior secondary schools, traditional methods such as lecture and chalkboard explanations are still prevalent, limiting students’ ability to visualize and comprehend trigonometric concepts effectively (Akpan & Effiom, 2017). Understanding the effectiveness of visual aids in teaching trigonometry is therefore essential for improving teaching methodologies and student learning outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Trigonometry forms an important part of the senior secondary school mathematics curriculum, yet students often perform poorly in this topic. National examination results, such as WAEC and NECO, reveal persistent low achievement in trigonometry, suggesting a gap between teaching methods and students’ learning needs (WAEC, 2022).
One of the main contributing factors to poor performance is the predominance of lecture-based teaching that does not provide students with a visual or interactive understanding of trigonometric concepts (Owolabi, 2019). Students struggle to grasp relationships between angles, sides, and trigonometric functions, which affects problem-solving abilities and reduces interest in mathematics (Ajayi & Adeyemi, 2020).
Although the use of visual aids has been widely advocated to enhance comprehension, its implementation in many schools remains limited due to insufficient resources, inadequate teacher training, and lack of awareness of its potential benefits (Nworgu, 2015). Consequently, there is a need to empirically examine the effectiveness of visual aids in teaching trigonometry and to provide evidence-based recommendations for improving mathematics instruction in senior secondary schools.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The general objective of this study is to examine the effectiveness of visual aids in teaching trigonometry to senior secondary school students. The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following hypothesis at a 0.05 level of significance:
H₀: The use of visual aids has no significant effect on students’ understanding and performance in trigonometry in senior secondary schools.
H₁: The use of visual aids has a significant effect on students’ understanding and performance in trigonometry in senior secondary schools.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study are significant to several stakeholders:

1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on the effectiveness of visual aids in teaching trigonometry in selected senior secondary schools. It targets students in senior secondary one and two (SS1 and SS2) because these classes cover foundational trigonometry topics. The research is limited to schools with access to basic visual aids, such as charts, diagrams, models, and computer-assisted illustrations.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Visual Aids: Teaching tools such as charts, diagrams, models, graphs, and animations used to present abstract mathematical concepts visually (Nworgu, 2015).
