Project – Effects of Health Education on Drug Abuse Prevention Among Secondary School Students in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Health education is an important aspect of the educational system because it equips individuals with knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for maintaining healthy lifestyles and preventing diseases and harmful behaviors. In schools, health education plays a significant role in shaping students’ understanding of personal health, environmental health, mental health, nutrition, sexuality education, and substance abuse prevention. Among adolescents, health education is particularly important because secondary school students are at a developmental stage where they are highly vulnerable to risky behaviors such as drug abuse, alcoholism, smoking, and other harmful practices.

Drug abuse has become one of the major public health and social problems affecting youths globally. It refers to the excessive, improper, or illegal use of substances in ways that can cause physical, psychological, emotional, and social harm to individuals. Drug abuse involves the misuse of substances such as alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, cocaine, tramadol, codeine, heroin, and other psychoactive drugs. According to the World Health Organization, substance abuse among adolescents contributes significantly to poor academic performance, mental health disorders, violence, criminal behavior, and premature death.

In Nigeria, the issue of drug abuse among youths has become increasingly alarming in recent years. Secondary school students are among the groups most affected due to peer pressure, curiosity, family influence, emotional stress, media exposure, and easy access to harmful substances. Studies have shown that many students engage in the use of alcohol, cigarettes, cannabis, tramadol, codeine mixtures, and other substances without fully understanding their health implications. Drug abuse among students has been associated with indiscipline, poor academic achievement, school dropout, violence, cultism, risky sexual behavior, and mental health problems.

Health education has therefore become an important strategy for preventing drug abuse among adolescents. Through health education programs, students are taught about the dangers of substance abuse, the consequences of addiction, methods of resisting peer pressure, and the importance of healthy decision-making. Effective health education encourages students to develop positive attitudes toward healthy living and equips them with the skills needed to avoid harmful behaviors. Udofia (2014) observed that awareness campaigns, school health programs, counseling services, and drug education initiatives can significantly reduce the rate of substance abuse among secondary school students.

Secondary schools play an important role in drug abuse prevention because schools provide opportunities for continuous interaction between teachers and students. Health education teachers, counselors, and school administrators are expected to educate students about the dangers associated with drug use and promote positive behavioral change. Drug abuse prevention programs in schools may include classroom instruction, seminars, peer education, counseling, anti-drug clubs, workshops, and awareness campaigns. These programs are intended to help students understand the physical, emotional, social, and academic consequences of drug abuse.

Adolescence is a sensitive period characterized by emotional instability, identity formation, curiosity, and increased desire for social acceptance. During this stage, many students experiment with substances due to peer influence, stress, low self-esteem, family problems, or exposure to negative social environments. Research indicates that drug abuse often begins at a young age among secondary school students and may continue into adulthood if preventive measures are not effectively implemented.

In Benin City and particularly in Egor Local Government Area, there has been growing concern about the increasing involvement of youths in drug-related activities. Egor Local Government Area is an urban community with many public and private secondary schools where students are exposed to different social and environmental influences. Issues such as peer pressure, unemployment, family instability, poverty, cultism, and media influence may contribute to the growing prevalence of drug abuse among adolescents in the area. The easy availability of substances such as alcohol, cigarettes, tramadol, and cannabis further increases the risk of substance abuse among students.

Despite the inclusion of health education in the school curriculum, many students still engage in drug abuse and other risky behaviors. This situation raises concerns regarding the effectiveness of health education programs in preventing substance abuse among secondary school students. Some schools may lack qualified health educators, effective counseling services, instructional materials, and adequate anti-drug awareness programs necessary for successful drug abuse prevention. In some cases, students may possess knowledge about drugs but still engage in substance abuse due to peer pressure, emotional problems, or weak parental supervision.

Furthermore, the role of parents, teachers, and the wider community cannot be overlooked in drug abuse prevention. Parents are expected to provide moral guidance, supervision, and emotional support to their children, while teachers and school counselors should create awareness and provide necessary support for students facing substance-related challenges. However, inadequate parental involvement, weak school-community collaboration, and poor implementation of health education policies may limit the effectiveness of drug abuse prevention efforts among secondary school students.

Scholars have emphasized the importance of health education in promoting healthy behavior among adolescents. Dosunmu and Odesanmi (2025) noted that educational interventions and awareness programs help students understand the social and health implications of drug abuse. Similarly, Ogbonna et al. (2024) observed that lack of awareness, peer dynamics, and family influence are among the major factors contributing to substance abuse among secondary school students in Nigeria.

Despite various government and school-based interventions aimed at reducing substance abuse among adolescents, drug abuse remains prevalent among secondary school students in Nigeria. There is therefore a need to assess whether health education significantly influences drug abuse prevention among students, particularly in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.

This study therefore seeks to examine the effects of health education on drug abuse prevention among secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State. The study intends to determine whether health education contributes significantly to students’ awareness, attitudes, and behaviors regarding drug abuse prevention.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Drug abuse among secondary school students has become a serious educational, social, and public health problem in Nigeria. Many adolescents engage in the misuse of substances such as alcohol, cigarettes, cannabis, tramadol, codeine, and other drugs despite the harmful consequences associated with their use. Drug abuse among students has been linked to poor academic performance, indiscipline, violence, mental health problems, school dropout, risky behavior, and criminal activities. Reports indicate that substance abuse among Nigerian secondary school students continues to increase due to peer pressure, curiosity, emotional stress, family problems, and lack of adequate awareness regarding the dangers of drug use.

Health education is expected to play an important role in preventing drug abuse by creating awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and promoting healthy lifestyles among students. Through classroom teaching, counseling, seminars, workshops, and anti-drug campaigns, students are expected to acquire knowledge and develop attitudes that discourage involvement in drug abuse. Schools are also expected to provide supportive environments where students can receive guidance and counseling regarding substance abuse prevention.

Despite the inclusion of health education in the school curriculum, many secondary school students still engage in drug abuse and related risky behaviors. In Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, cases of smoking, alcohol consumption, misuse of prescription drugs, and involvement in substance-related activities among youths have become a growing concern for parents, teachers, and community leaders. Some students who are aware of the dangers of drug abuse still continue to experiment with harmful substances due to peer influence, poor parental supervision, emotional stress, and social pressures.

Another problem is that some schools may not have adequate health education teachers, counseling services, instructional materials, or effective anti-drug programs necessary for successful drug abuse prevention. In some cases, health education may be taught theoretically without practical demonstrations, counseling support, or interactive activities that could influence students’ behavior positively. Poor implementation of school health programs and lack of collaboration between parents, schools, and community organizations may also weaken efforts aimed at preventing drug abuse among students.

Furthermore, modern societal influences such as social media, movies, music, and peer groups continue to expose adolescents to substance-related behaviors that may encourage drug use. Students may imitate behaviors observed in their environment without fully understanding the consequences. This situation raises questions regarding the effectiveness of health education in preventing drug abuse among secondary school students.

Although previous studies have examined substance abuse among adolescents in Nigeria, limited research has specifically focused on the effects of health education on drug abuse prevention among secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State. This creates a gap in knowledge that this study seeks to fill. Therefore, the problem of this study is to determine whether health education significantly influences drug abuse prevention among secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State.
