Project – Effects of Insecurity on Teaching, Learning, and Academic Performance of Students

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Education remains one of the most important tools for national growth, technological advancement, and human capital development. It plays a major role in shaping the social, economic, political, and intellectual development of every nation. Universities are expected to provide quality education, promote research, and develop skilled manpower needed for national transformation. For effective teaching and learning to take place, there must be peace, security, and stability within the educational environment. However, the rising level of insecurity in Nigeria has become a major obstacle to the achievement of educational goals, especially in tertiary institutions.

Nigeria has experienced serious security challenges over the years, including terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, cultism, communal clashes, and violent attacks on educational institutions. According to Adebayo (2021), insecurity refers to a condition in which individuals and communities are exposed to danger, fear, uncertainty, and threats to life and property. The persistent insecurity in Nigeria has affected different sectors of the economy, particularly the educational sector.

The North-East region of Nigeria has been one of the areas most affected by insecurity due to the activities of Boko Haram insurgents. The Boko Haram insurgency, which began in 2009, has led to destruction of lives and properties, displacement of people, closure of schools, and disruption of academic activities within the region. Yusuf and Ibrahim (2020) stated that insurgency in Northern Nigeria has created fear among students, teachers, and parents, thereby weakening educational development in affected areas.

The University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), located in Borno State, has continued to operate under difficult security conditions despite persistent insurgency in the region. Although the institution has shown resilience in maintaining academic activities, insecurity has continued to affect the teaching and learning process. Frequent security threats, bomb explosions, attacks within Maiduguri, and fear of insurgent activities have created tension and uncertainty among students and lecturers. According to Okeke (2022), insecurity affects the quality of teaching by reducing lecturers’ morale, commitment, and effectiveness in the classroom.

Teaching is an important aspect of education that involves the transfer of knowledge, ideas, skills, and values from lecturers to students. Effective teaching requires a peaceful environment where lecturers can perform their duties without fear or intimidation. However, insecurity disrupts academic activities by causing school closures, irregular lectures, poor attendance, and limited interaction between students and lecturers. Ojo (2020) observed that insecurity contributes to instability within educational institutions and reduces the quality of academic delivery.

Learning is also greatly affected by insecurity. Students who study under conditions of fear and uncertainty often experience emotional stress, anxiety, and psychological trauma. These conditions negatively affect students’ ability to concentrate during lectures, participate actively in classroom discussions, and prepare adequately for examinations. Nwankwo and Salisu (2021) noted that insecurity reduces students’ motivation toward education and contributes to poor learning outcomes in tertiary institutions.

Academic performance refers to the level of success attained by students in examinations, assignments, tests, and other academic activities. Students’ academic performance can be negatively affected when learning environments are unstable and unsafe. According to Ahmed and Mohammed (2021), students exposed to violence and insecurity often experience psychological trauma that affects their academic concentration and educational achievement. Insecurity may also lead to disruption of academic calendars, cancellation of lectures, and inability of students to complete their academic programs within the expected period.

Furthermore, insecurity affects the psychological wellbeing of students and lecturers. Constant fear of attacks, kidnapping, or violence may create emotional instability and mental stress among members of the academic community. Students may develop fear of attending lectures or participating in school activities due to insecurity around the institution. Lecturers may also become less productive because of concerns about personal safety and job security.

In addition, insecurity affects infrastructural development and academic investment within tertiary institutions. Educational facilities may be damaged during violent attacks, while investors and development partners may be reluctant to support institutions located in insecure environments. This situation negatively affects the quality of education and overall academic development.

Despite efforts by the Nigerian government and security agencies to improve security in schools through deployment of security personnel, surveillance systems, and community policing initiatives, insecurity continues to pose serious threats to educational development in the North-East region. Many students and lecturers still feel unsafe within and around university campuses.

Although several studies have examined insecurity and educational development in Nigeria, limited attention has been given to the specific effects of insecurity on teaching, learning, and academic performance of students in the University of Maiduguri. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the effects of insecurity on teaching, learning, and academic performance of students in UNIMAID.

1.2. Statement of the Problem

Insecurity has become one of the greatest challenges facing the Nigerian educational system, particularly in the North-East region where insurgency and violent attacks have persisted for many years. Educational institutions are expected to provide a safe and conducive environment for teaching and learning, but the increasing rate of insecurity in Nigeria has negatively affected the stability and effectiveness of academic activities.

The University of Maiduguri has remained one of the tertiary institutions most affected by insecurity due to the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno State. Although the institution has continued academic activities despite security threats, students and lecturers still face fear, anxiety, and uncertainty associated with violent attacks, bomb explosions, kidnappings, and communal violence within Maiduguri and surrounding areas.

Insecurity has disrupted teaching and learning activities in UNIMAID in several ways. Lecturers may experience fear and reduced motivation, while students may find it difficult to attend lectures regularly due to concerns about personal safety. Academic calendars are sometimes disrupted during periods of heightened insecurity, leading to interruption of lectures, postponement of examinations, and delays in academic programs.

Furthermore, students studying under insecure conditions often experience psychological trauma, emotional stress, and fear, which negatively affect their learning ability and academic performance. Some students may lose concentration during lectures, while others may develop low interest in academic activities because of insecurity. Continuous exposure to insecurity may also result in poor classroom participation, low academic achievement, and increased dropout rates among students.

Despite several government efforts to improve security within tertiary institutions, insecurity remains a serious threat to effective teaching, learning, and academic excellence in the University of Maiduguri. While many studies have examined insecurity and education in Nigeria generally, there is still limited empirical research focusing specifically on how insecurity affects teaching, learning, and academic performance of students in UNIMAID.

It is against this background that this study seeks to investigate the effects of insecurity on teaching, learning, and academic performance of students in the University of Maiduguri.
