Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most important staple crops in Nigeria, forming a significant part of the daily diet and serving as a major source of income for rural farmers (FAO, 2023). Kebbi State, located in Nigeria’s northwest region, is a key rice-producing area due to its fertile soils, abundant water resources, and favorable climatic conditions. Rice farming in the region supports livelihoods, ensures food security, and contributes to the state’s agro-industrial economy. However, rice production faces challenges, including irregular rainfall, prolonged dry seasons, pests, and low adoption of modern agricultural technologies (Abubakar & Bello, 2021). Modern irrigation practices have emerged as a key strategy to enhance rice productivity by ensuring consistent water supply, improving crop growth, and mitigating the adverse effects of climatic variability.
Modern irrigation practices involve the application of controlled amounts of water to crops at critical growth stages, using systems such as sprinkler, drip, or basin irrigation (FAO, 2022). Unlike traditional rain-fed agriculture, irrigation ensures stable yields, reduces crop failure, and promotes multiple cropping cycles. Despite its potential, the adoption of modern irrigation systems among smallholder rice farmers in rural Kebbi communities remains limited due to factors such as high installation costs, inadequate technical knowledge, poor infrastructure, and limited access to credit facilities (Sadiq & Garba, 2020). Understanding the effects of modern irrigation practices on rice yield in these communities is crucial for designing interventions that enhance productivity and rural livelihoods.
Rice is a major cereal crop consumed by millions of Nigerians, and its production is critical for achieving national food security (Onu & Ajibola, 2021). In Kebbi State, rice cultivation is predominantly carried out by smallholder farmers who rely heavily on rainfall for irrigation. Rain-fed rice farming, however, is highly vulnerable to climate variability, particularly droughts and erratic rainfall patterns, which reduce crop yield and income stability (Abubakar & Bello, 2021).
Modern irrigation techniques, including sprinkler, drip, and basin irrigation, are designed to overcome these challenges by providing a controlled water supply to crops. Research has shown that modern irrigation can improve water use efficiency, reduce crop stress during dry periods, and increase rice yield substantially (FAO, 2022). In addition, modern irrigation facilitates the adoption of improved seed varieties, enhances nutrient uptake, and allows for multiple cropping cycles within a year, thereby improving overall productivity and profitability for smallholder farmers (Sadiq & Garba, 2020).
Despite these benefits, adoption rates of modern irrigation in rural Kebbi communities are low. High capital costs, lack of technical expertise, limited government support, and poor maintenance of irrigation facilities hinder widespread use (Mohammed & Tijjani, 2021). Consequently, rice farmers continue to rely on traditional rain-fed systems, which are less reliable and more susceptible to climatic variability. Understanding the link between modern irrigation practices and rice yield is essential for promoting sustainable rice production and improving the livelihoods of rural communities.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Rice farmers in rural Kebbi State face several challenges that affect productivity and income. Traditional rain-fed farming is highly dependent on seasonal rainfall, making rice cultivation vulnerable to drought, irregular precipitation, and water scarcity (Onu & Ajibola, 2021). These climatic uncertainties often result in low yields, crop failure, and financial losses for smallholder farmers.
Although modern irrigation practices can mitigate these challenges by ensuring regular water supply, their adoption remains limited. High installation costs, lack of technical knowledge, poor infrastructure, and inadequate access to credit prevent many farmers from implementing modern irrigation systems (Sadiq & Garba, 2020). Furthermore, research focusing specifically on the effects of modern irrigation practices on rice yield in rural Kebbi communities is limited, creating a gap in knowledge that hinders the development of targeted interventions. Without adequate understanding, policymakers, agricultural extension officers, and development agencies cannot effectively support smallholder farmers to improve productivity, reduce vulnerability to climate variability, and enhance food security in the region.
This study seeks to evaluate the effects of modern irrigation practices on rice yield in rural Kebbi State, identify the constraints to adoption, and provide evidence-based recommendations for enhancing rice production through sustainable irrigation strategies.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of modern irrigation practices on rice yield in rural communities of Kebbi State.
The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Research Hypothesis
To guide the study, the following hypothesis is formulated:

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it provides empirical evidence on the role of modern irrigation practices in enhancing rice yield in rural Kebbi communities. Secondly, it informs policymakers, agricultural extension officers, and development agencies on effective strategies for promoting sustainable irrigation. Thirdly, the findings will assist smallholder farmers in making informed decisions about irrigation adoption to improve productivity and income. Finally, the study contributes to the academic literature on modern agricultural technologies and rural development in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on rice farmers in selected rural communities of Kebbi State. It examines the types of modern irrigation practices used, their effect on rice yield, and the challenges faced in adoption. The temporal scope of the study covers the last ten years (2014–2024) to capture recent trends in rice production and irrigation adoption.
