INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is widely recognized as a fundamental instrument for national development, social transformation, and technological advancement. In Nigeria, secondary education plays a critical role in preparing students for higher education and equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge for societal contribution. Among the science subjects offered at this level, Biology occupies a central position due to its relevance to health, agriculture, environmental sustainability, and biotechnology. Despite its importance, students’ academic performance in Biology in many Nigerian secondary schools has remained a source of concern for educators, parents, and policymakers.
One of the major factors influencing students’ academic performance in Biology is the method and quality of instruction. Effective teaching goes beyond verbal explanations; it involves the use of appropriate teaching aids that enhance understanding and retention of concepts. Teaching aids, also referred to as instructional materials, include charts, models, diagrams, laboratory equipment, audio-visual tools, and digital resources that facilitate the teaching-learning process. These aids help to make abstract concepts concrete, thereby improving students’ comprehension.
Biology, by its nature, involves many abstract and complex processes such as cell division, photosynthesis, genetics, and ecological interactions. When these concepts are taught without the support of teaching aids, students often find them difficult to understand, leading to poor academic performance. This limits students’ exposure to innovative learning experiences that could enhance their academic performance. Teachers’ attitudes and competencies in using teaching aids also play a significant role in determining their effectiveness in the classroom.
Research has shown that the use of appropriate teaching aids can significantly improve students’ academic performance by increasing motivation, enhancing understanding, and promoting long-term retention of knowledge. Therefore, it becomes necessary to examine the extent to which teaching aids influence students’ academic performance in Biology, particularly in Nasarawa State where performance trends have raised concerns.
This study is therefore designed to investigate the Effects of teaching methods on student’s performance in biologyin secondary schools in Nasarawa State, with a view to providing recommendations for improving teaching and learning outcomes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The persistent poor academic performance of students in Biology in secondary schools has become a major concern in the Nigerian educational system. Despite the importance of Biology as a core science subject, many students continue to perform below expectations in both internal and external examinations. This situation has been attributed to several factors, among which the lack of effective use of teaching aids is prominent.
In many secondary schools in Nasarawa State, Biology is often taught using conventional lecture methods without adequate instructional materials. Teachers tend to rely heavily on verbal explanations, leaving students to imagine complex biological processes without visual or practical support. This approach makes learning abstract, difficult, and less engaging, thereby negatively affecting students’ understanding and performance.
Moreover, even when teaching aids are available, they are sometimes underutilized due to teachers’ lack of training or reluctance to adopt innovative teaching methods. In some cases, schools lack basic laboratory equipment and materials necessary for practical lessons, depriving students of hands-on experiences that are essential for mastering Biology concepts.
The problem is further compounded by inadequate funding, poor maintenance of existing instructional materials, and limited access to modern educational technologies. As a result, students are not exposed to effective learning environments that could enhance their academic achievement.
Another issue is the disparity between urban and rural schools in terms of availability and use of teaching aids. Schools in rural areas of Nasarawa State often face greater challenges, including insufficient resources and lack of qualified teachers, which further contributes to poor academic performance in Biology.
Despite numerous studies on factors affecting students’ academic performance, there is still a need to specifically examine the role of teaching aids in improving Biology performance in the context of Nasarawa State. This gap in knowledge necessitates the present study.
Therefore, the main problem of this study is to determine the extent to which teaching aids influence students’ academic performance in Biology in secondary schools in Nasarawa State.
1.3 Research Questions
The study seeks to answer the following questions:
- What types of teaching aids are available for teaching Biology in secondary schools in Nasarawa State?
- To what extent are teaching aids utilized by Biology teachers in secondary schools?
- What is the level of students’ academic performance in Biology in the study area?
- What effect do teaching aids have on students’ academic performance in Biology?
1.4 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the Effects of teaching methods on student’s performance in biologyin secondary schools in Nasarawa State.
The specific objectives are to:
- Identify the types of teaching aids available for Biology teaching.
- Examine the extent of utilization of teaching aids by Biology teachers.
- Assess students’ academic performance in Biology.
- Determine the effect of teaching aids on students’ academic performance in Biology.
1.5 Research Hypothesis
The study will test the following hypothesis:
H₀: There is no significant Effects of teaching methods on student’s performance in biologyin secondary schools in Nasarawa State.
H1: There is no significant Effects of teaching methods on student’s performance in biologyin secondary schools in Nasarawa State.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be beneficial to several stakeholders in the education sector.
Teachers will gain insight into the importance of using teaching aids to enhance instructional effectiveness and improve students’ understanding of Biology concepts. The findings will encourage them to adopt more interactive and practical teaching methods.

1.7 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on the Effects of teaching methods on student’s performance in biologyin secondary schools in Nasarawa State. It covers selected public and private secondary schools within the state.
The study is limited to Biology teachers and students, and it examines the availability, utilization, and impact of teaching aids on students’ performance.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Teaching Aids: These are instructional materials and tools used by the teacher to facilitate effective teaching and enhance students’ understanding of Biology concepts. In this study, teaching aids include charts, diagrams, models, laboratory equipment, specimens, audio-visual materials, and digital resources used during Biology lessons.
Academic Performance: This refers to the measurable level of students’ achievement in Biology as determined by their scores in tests, examinations, and continuous assessments within the period of the study.
Biology: A branch of science that deals with the study of living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution. In this study, it refers specifically to the Biology subject taught in secondary schools.
Secondary School: An educational institution that provides post-primary education to students, typically between Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) levels in Nigeria.
Instructional Materials: All physical and non-physical resources used to support teaching and learning. In this study, it is used interchangeably with teaching aids and includes both traditional and modern educational tools.
Utilization of Teaching Aids: The extent to which Biology teachers effectively use available instructional materials during classroom instruction to improve students’ understanding and engagement.
Students: Learners enrolled in secondary schools in Nasarawa State who are offering Biology as a subject.
Teacher Effectiveness: The ability of a Biology teacher to deliver lessons in a way that promotes understanding, engagement, and improved academic performance, particularly through the use of teaching aids.
Learning Outcomes: The knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies acquired by students after instruction in Biology, as reflected in their academic performance.
