INTRODUCTION

Hotels, as major components of the hospitality sector, provide accommodation, food services, conference facilities, recreation, and other essential services that support domestic and international tourism activities. However, the operation of hotel facilities requires substantial consumption of energy resources due to continuous demands for lighting, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, laundry services, kitchen operations, water heating, and electronic equipment. Consequently, hotels are among the most energy-intensive commercial buildings, making energy management an important concern for sustainable hospitality development (Bohdanowicz, Churie-Kallhauge, & Martinac, 2001).
Energy consumption has become a major operational challenge for hotels because energy costs constitute a significant proportion of hospitality operating expenses. Unlike many other commercial businesses, hotels operate throughout the day and night, requiring constant electricity supply to maintain guest comfort and service quality. Energy efficiency practices in hotels can significantly contribute to operational cost reduction through reduced electricity bills, lower fuel consumption, improved equipment performance, and decreased maintenance expenses. However, empirical evidence remains insufficient regarding the extent to which energy efficiency practices directly contribute to operational cost reduction within Nigerian hotels.
Although previous studies have examined environmental sustainability, energy consumption patterns, and green practices in hospitality, there remains a need for further investigation into the specific relationship between energy efficiency practices and operational cost reduction. Understanding this relationship is important for hotel managers, investors, policymakers, and industry stakeholders seeking strategies for improving profitability and sustainability.
Therefore, this study examines energy efficiency practices and operational cost reduction in Nigerian hotels. It focuses on determining whether practices such as energy-saving technologies, efficient energy management, renewable energy adoption, and employee energy conservation practices contribute significantly to reducing hotel operating expenses.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The Nigerian hospitality industry faces increasing operational challenges due to rising energy costs, unreliable electricity supply, and heavy dependence on alternative power sources. Hotels require continuous energy supply to provide essential services such as lighting, cooling, refrigeration, laundry, food preparation, and entertainment facilities. However, frequent electricity interruptions have forced many hotels to depend extensively on diesel generators, resulting in increased fuel consumption, maintenance expenses, and overall operational costs.
Although energy represents one of the largest controllable expenses in hotel operations, many Nigerian hotels have not fully adopted effective energy efficiency practices. Several hotels continue to operate with outdated electrical equipment, inefficient lighting systems, poor energy monitoring mechanisms, and limited staff involvement in energy conservation. These practices contribute to energy wastage and increase the financial burden associated with hotel management.
The problem is further complicated by the perception among some hotel operators that energy efficiency investments require significant capital expenditure with uncertain financial benefits. While energy-efficient technologies such as smart meters, renewable energy systems, efficient HVAC equipment, and automated control systems may involve high initial costs, the extent to which these investments reduce long-term operational expenses in Nigerian hotels remains inadequately established.
Existing studies have examined energy consumption patterns and sustainability issues within Nigerian hotels, but limited attention has been given to the direct relationship between energy efficiency practices and operational cost reduction. For instance, while Oluseyi et al. (2016) examined energy consumption and carbon footprint in Lagos hotels, there remains a gap regarding how specific efficiency measures influence financial performance.
Additionally, many hotel managers lack adequate information regarding which energy efficiency strategies provide the greatest cost-saving benefits. Without empirical evidence demonstrating the economic value of energy efficiency practices, investment decisions may continue to prioritize short-term solutions such as fuel-powered generators rather than sustainable energy management strategies.
The absence of sufficient research evidence creates a knowledge gap among hospitality stakeholders concerning the economic benefits of energy efficiency adoption. Addressing this gap is necessary because improved energy management can enhance hotel profitability, reduce environmental impacts, and strengthen the sustainability of Nigeria’s hospitality industry.
Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the relationship between energy efficiency practices and operational cost reduction in Nigerian hotels.
